This could affect the performance of the expansion chamber.  It is designed to transfer heat from the surrounding air to the CO2 inside it.  Enclosing the x-chamber within another structure (the magazine) could create a dead air space trapping the air that has already been cooled from interaction with the chamber next to it.  As this layer of air gets progressively colder, there would be less of a difference in temperature between it and the CO2.  Eventually, the expansion chamber would have insufficient temperature differential with the surrounding air to function.

To get around this, you could get one of the magazine styled expansion chambers and have your friend make the magazine well.  This would leave at least a portion of the chamber exposed to the air.  The downside to this is the one of these I experimented with had problems:  It didn't fit well on my A5 due to interference with the trigger guard and when adjusted to fit, it leaked.

You and me both! I need a MUCH bigger budget, every time I turn around I find a new weapon I want to sim. The M40 has been done at least once though. (Rather well too if I remember correctly...bolt action and everything..)

How did they get it bolt action?

oh and how did you do it?

Nauzer covered it in his milsim collection thread because I was curious too. There are more details in there, but longs story short, no, it does not affect the structural integrity or your marker in any significant way. (Besides, you will be clamping it together with the carry handle anyway.)

A LOT of work...Clone would probably be the resident expert here. Here is one example though...not an A5, but some of Kruki99's handy-work from A5OG:

So I had an in depth conversation with my friend from the machine shop tonight, and explained to him how the x-chamber works, and the heat transfer, and what I actually need, and he seemed to think that he could work something out.

So I think I'm going to order an M4 magazine, and let him get the exterior dimensions for it, and let him go at making an expansion chamber/air-through magazine that looks like an M4 mag.  And because it'll be custom, I can have him shorten it, so it doesn't look too long, and have it basically anywhere on the gun I want it.  So wish us luck, and I'll post pictures when I can.
