Are they realy as stupid as they sound??

"The fear of these false alarms is that the people will become ---ANERD--- to the warnings"

What in the flying dutchmens golden chest is "ANERD"

The word she wanted to use was Inert.

"There are no distinctions between a HAZMAT team and a Bomb Squad" - MSNNBC Anylist

These incidents occured withen 5 mins of each
other.

Honestly.

I'm not surprised to learn that reporters aren't geniuses.

But I don't think "inert" was the word either.

Yeah. Duh. They are pretty faces to read a teleprompter. They arent expected to be inteligent really, they are just supposed to be able to enunciate well and not get tounge tied, ect ect. But anylists... That worries me.

Bill O'reilly doesnt read of a teleprompter all the time, alot of the fox news shows dont read of telepromters that often, its to hard with live interviews over contrivesal issues like secure borders and the war on terror.

Ever watch Fox and Friends in the morning? They use them. They tell their guests to read from the teleprompter. But you are right in the fact they arent staring at the camera. But then again. They may have multiple teleprompters that we dont know about and in reality do read from them. unless of course you workt there and know where I am assuming.

Not joking.  Inured.

Maybe it wasn't the reporter's vocabulary that was lacking.

Wrong context if that was the word she used.

Au contraire - exactly the right context.  While reporters aren't exactly the model of proper English, this strikes me as a situation where the reporter was spot-on.

Seems like we have might have a debate at hand then.

in·ert     P   Pronu nciation Key (n-ūrt)
adj.
Unable to move or act.
Sluggish in action or motion; lethargic. See Synonyms at inactive.

As a counter point, It seems to me 'Inert' would be proper in the context.

She was worried that the false alarm would make people Inert (Sluggesh to act) to the warnings.

She was worried that the false alarm would make people Inurd (prolonged subjection;Or accustom) To the warnings.

You're defense?

Using "inert" would be very odd - while you can squeeze it into the dictionary definition, that would be a tortured use indeed.

Moreover, as you pointed out, she did not say "inert" - she said something that sounded like "anerd", which is how you pronounce "inured".

She said what she meant to say, and she was right to say it.  Not much to discuss.

I am agreeing with you.

You guys are welcome to think so - but in the real world, she used "inured" in it's correct place.
