I have an old Tippmann A-5 (serial # less than 200).

I will detail the problem:

1.) I ordered a replacement ASA adapter (the part that goes into the tombstone adapter) and it came with a new steel braided hose.

2.) The steel braided hose won't connect to the original 90' elbow because the steel hose has a bronze tip sticking out of the end.

I still have my original stock steel hose, but I can't remove the new ASA adapter from the new steel hose. The new steel hose and the old steel hose look slightly different in that the new steel hose does not have the "wrench grip" part on the end that goes into the ASA adapter and the new steel hose has a bronze tip sticking out of the end that should go into the 90' elbow.

Did Tippmann change the hose for the newer A-5s? Why can't I get the new steel braided hose into the original 90' elbow? Do I need a new elbow of a different size?

Yes they changed the design from a standard 1/8 NPT end braided hose to some cheesy non-standard crap, that is permanently attached to the ASA adapter.

The part that you ordered is simply a 1/8 to ASA adapter, you can find them on a few paintball websites. Im pretty sure county carries them, and im fairly certain i saw them on palmers site once.
