...I want some naughty stranger advice.
Since I've written novels about my position in life on here, I'll make this quick. Right now I'm the Lead over a weekend shift in a hospital admissions department. It's a mind numbing job but it pays my bills and I was unemployed for quite some time and found the whole situation to be unbearable. I absolutely have to have my job. Around two weeks ago some drama happened because another Team Lead applied for a job in the same hospital and they ripped her a new one and said part of the position was that you weren't actively looking for another job. That's BS I realize, but you do what you have to do when you need a job. Well this week I got a call from one of the local PD"s saying that they were doing their fitness testing next saturday at 8AM. They don't care about my color blindness and need several officers as they're entirely understaffed. I'm very certain I'll pass the physical, I have a perfect record, almost double the required college with a 3.7 GPA, I shoot well, am physically active, and come from a law enforcement household. In other words I'm very confident. The hitch is that I work 9-5 the saturday they're testing. Now typically this wouldn't be an issue since I've never taken a sick day or day off and my boss has practically asked me to take a vacation to get away from the place. BUT...of course that weekend is a system downtime and they've said there'd be no shift switches or days off granted for the Team Leads (both of us So now I'm at an awkward dilemma. I'm dead set on going to this fitness test-that job would bump me from roughly 22K a year to 43K a year. My options are- A:) Tell my boss the truth. This is sketchy, but would anyone blame you for attempting to double your salary? B:) Give no advance notice and call in sick. By policy the worst it would do to me is account against my three strike call in police which I never use, but given the timing it might make me look like an ass. Both have their ups and downs. I'm fairly sure they wouldn't fire me, but they could very well demote me and since we have no full time positions open for regular admissions staff force me to go PRN. There's no TL;DR. I'll be going in to the office tomorrow morning first thing to talk to my supervisor, just looking for outside opinions. In return you all get cookies.

Tell them you have another engagement that you are going to attend and you are not going to be available as scheduled. It isnt nessisary to tell them what it is. If they really need someone there they can have a higher up cover the shift. You are not their slave.

I highly doubt the legality of preventing you from looking for better or even different work.
I'd go talk to my boss. Taking a sickie and not being sick can lead to disciplinary actions. KBK |

Kayback's got the gist of it as far as I'm concerned. If they were to let you go for looking at the possibility of a position in another line of work, I'm pretty sure you'd have a wrongful termination suit on your hands. The reality is that you're doing them a favor by not just calling out. Of course, there are those dick managers out there who will throw the rule book away and figure they can do whatever they want. I've always kept my job searches secret, and made sure that my new employer can pick me up immediately if I'm dropped from my other job. The reason being that there's a lot of sabotage that happens in the food service industry at the managerial level, and they really don't want you planting time bombs, so they usually cut you loose sometime inconvenient. Like the day after you give notice in the middle of a shift, or the day of right after you give your notice, but that's due to the particularities of my industry. And wouldn't necessarily translate to your industry. That said, is there any way the PD can give you the exam at another time? |

Before you go to your boss, I'd call up whoever called you from the PD and see if you can get an alternate/early test time. Explain to them your situation and They will probably accommodate you if they are that hard-up for fresh meat.

I'm not sure on the alternative testing dates, I'll have to check it out.
Hospitals are practically putrid with this type of managerial vengeance. I can see why you wouldn't want vindictive soon to be ex employees in either field, but the most fair way to combat that problem is the way our local Walmart DC does it-no two weeks notice. When you're done you're done and, if all was on the up and up, you're welcome back in six months. I was fired from my first hospital job a few years back on the last day of my two weeks' notice for being "at risk." They felt I was going to no show my last day of work and terminated me. I technically quit so I was unable to file unemployment but the termination black flagged my in hospital recruitment databases so I was only able to get a job at my current company our of a fluke. Even now I have to stay in this company-my previous unemployment skit lasted so long because I had to wait for a different entity in the same system. As managerial staff I see it more now than ever. They grade employees on nearly impossible standards so that they're unable to get raises. They do corrective actions on silly infractions so that you're unable to transfer within the company. They keep a large backlog of info do that they can fire you at any time. I'm so used to this mindset that working other places has been a culture shock for sure. So I can sort of empathize with your industry. |

You probably made up your kind already, but I Would take the sick day. Only because I was in the same situation a couple of months ago and didn't take the day. I had a job that paid 10k more a year, and salaried. All I had to do was show up and work the line for 4 hours. I did the nice thing and asked my boss ahead and told him why. (for reference he is my reference for getting a job in Vail, CO so he knows I'm trying to get a better job) He said no, and now I'm in a position I can't call out that day.

Just remember that at some point in your interview process, and probably the polygraph, that ou will be asked if you have ever lied to skip work/etc. Now, as long as you explain that ou were doing it to come to the PT day, they'll have that on record, but just some food for thought.
Also, your BI will almost 100% positively be calling your current employer for feedback. Edited by usafpilot07 - 03 August 2012 at 9:32am |

For the PD position he's wanting to apply for? Reading comprehension must be new to you as well. |

While I don't like to screw over my current employer, take the day off no matter what. Why should a crappy-but-pays-the-bills job keep you from getting a better job that you like?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I went and just openly told her my situation and she was surprisingly undisturbed. She said that this was a lengthy process with no clear outcome so she would work with my hours to accommodate me until I could give the company a clear plan.
And Whale-I'll try to make it spicier next time ;) Now I'm on to buying some new running shoes and seeing exactly how my much running I need to do this week to prepare. |

You're a big boy, if they didn't want you to go then they'd get told to take a running **edited** to themselves.

Last time I grew a pair and said that I went six months unemployed
Working in Texas, and especially the hospital industry, you have to really watch how you deal with your employers. They don't need much reason to fire you and with the hospital flagging system they can really mess you up.
Not to mention that alot of the interview with the PD focuses on former job performance.

How long does it take? If it starts an hour before your shift, tell them you need to take some "personal time" and that you will still be in, just late.

How long do you think it will be before you know if the PD is interested in hiring you?

In my experience, the initial testing day can take anywhere from an hour and a half to 7 hours |

I'm running (pun intended) into an issue that may the screw the whole thing up.
I've been bicycling for 6 months rather than jogging so I went out for my first run today-1.5 in roughly 19 minutes. My body rejected me. Here's hoping I can cut around 4-5 minutes in a week

I'm not sure what it's like in Texas, but I think here in NC, the cutoff is 15 minutes, and under 12 to actually get points. |
