The same sliding pads used by baseball players fit and work well under most clothing. In the protective gear category, I'd add a cup. You have never known true excruciating pain until you are hit in the testicles with a paintball. As I am just getting off crutches from a fall on my right knee that has kept me for the speedball field for two months now, I say include a very good pair of knee pads in your equipment bag. I would recommend a hard shell type like those oversize ones used by skateboarders. A screwed up knee doesn't get better with age. A serious knee injury NEVER heals to be as good as it was before the injury! Edited by Bruce A. Frank - 28 February 2006 at 1:48pm |

I'd at least wear some good knee bads. As Bruce said, once you screw up your knee(s), they never get back to the way they were before. Paintball is very hard on your knees, probably more than any other body part. It never hurts to wear elbow pads either.

In Ranger school we had padding sewn into the knees and elbows of our BDU's.
There is an easy way to do it. If you look at the knees and elbows you'll see that an extra layer of cloth is added. You cut a slit into the top or bottom inside of the stitches, insert your padding (3/8" foam works best) and then sew the slits shut. |

Padding that fits into pockets is good for occasional bumps, but it doesn't stay in place well when crawling any distance and hardly any benefit at all when sliding. I have the Ronin knee/shin guards that are held in place with Velcro straps. They are Okay in that they stay in place fairly well, but if you drop to your knees on a sharp rock you feel it. They need a hard outside shell. My son's knee pads are a brand called 3A that are a skin tight/compression style. Padding is fair, but they will not stay up properly. I suggested a garter belt, but he didn't think that funny We both use Proto elbow pads. Don't stay positioned well over the sensitive parts of your elbows. Trying to crawl just a few feet with them in mixed rocks and sand left some really sensitive bad bruises. Edited by Bruce A. Frank - 28 February 2006 at 10:59pm |

Nice paintball pants are great to have, they provide the rugged design needed to withstand aggresive play, and most have padding to help with slides and dives.
Knee pads are good too. If you play front in speedball you will REALLY want to have AT LEAST knee pads on to help with head first dives. I wear knee pads and an elbow pad on my right arm only since that's the arm I hold my marker in when I dive and rely on my elbow for landing gear. I use Proto knee pads and I am pretty satisfied with them. Personally I wouldn't go with hard shelled pads though, as it provides another spot on your body that is a guaranteed break if you get shot there. Edited by FyreFly - 28 February 2006 at 11:44pm |

What, you think knee injuries don't take place until you are 40? The majority of knee injuries, that are debilitating later in life, take place among teenagers participating in sports. If you are sliding in I would guess you are playing speedball. Your field is using air-bunkers fastened to the ground with what, magic? Or, could they be using plastic or metal anchors driven into the ground at the corners of the bunkers. Ever seen what a high speed slide into one of those protruding anchors does to a knee joint? I have! 'Course, at 14 you think you are indestructible! Fact is, from a serious inury stand point, knee pads are more important than sliding pads. Edited by Bruce A.
