I've done a few quick searches on my question, but Im not exactly sure what to search for, so I'll just ask it...

Ive been looking at various high-end paintball guns and they all have some sort of sensor for detecting if a ball has been loaded.  My question is, what are some of the more common devices, and how do they detect the balls?

For example, the ION uses the Break beam eye, but do these eyes detect loaded balls with a laser or some other mechanism?

Thanks in advanced

The break beam eye uses light that is recieved on the other side of the
breech. If it is broken, it will fire (Like the opposite of your everyday grauge
door).

The other type is a reflector which sends a beam of light and it
reflects of certain paintballs. The only thing with reflectors is you need
bright paintball shells.

Great analogy with the garage door sensors.

The eyes put out a typically invisble signal. You can get colored eyes that emit colored light (typically red) so it can look like a laser, but it's not.

The typically invisible signal is in the infrared region of the light spectrum. The whole idea of using photo eyes is to prevent paintballs from getting destroyed by the front bolt while they are entering the breech. Another antichop technology on the market is the Tippmann ACT system.
