The console post had some comments about PC Gaming being. We obviously have a member or three that build if not upgrade their systems. I'm sure I posted something about a rig I built this time last year. Anyone else want to share their builds and throw some performance numbers up? My computer was built in 2006 and I don't really remember the full specs. Since then I have added more RAM and changed video cards because my first died on me. I could look inside the computer to find some information but meh.
Lian Li Case I am on my 4th power supply AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.21 GHz Some ASUS MOBO 6 GB or RAM My video card was bought on one of those deal of the day websites. It was $50. I have two internal hard drives that equal 1TB 23" LCD Samsung monitor. EDIT: Ran 3d Mark Vantage and it told me some more info. Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 MOBO: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2N32-SLI DELUXE RAM: OCZ DDR2

Mine is just a cyber power with a Corsair because Cyberpowers crap PSUs destroy hardware.
Intel i7 3770 16G RAM GeForce 670 (SLI incoming after I find a jerb) Water cooler 500M SSD 2 TB HD 2 TB WD external HD Blu Ray drive Touchscreen fan controls The only real test games I've done have been BF 3, Skyrim, Arkham City, Skyrim, and Guild Wars 2. BF 3, Arkham, and Crysis 3 run 40-60 FPS all settings maxed. I have about a dozen visual mods on Skyrim including full HD textures, injector with all settings maxed, DoF, etc etc and I average around 48 FPS Guild Wars 2 is a hog-all settings maxed with supersampling I'm usually at 40 FPS. Sims 3 runs at a smooth 250 FPS ;) My one weakness is the lack of SLI-modern features like SSAO and PhysX are a big drain on the GPU. Temp wise the water cooling system is great-CPU runs at 29c under full load and GPU never goes above 60. The whole setup is run to a 42" 120hz LED Samsung with both a surround sound bar and a great set of surround headphones whose manufacturer slips my mind. Honestly, the headphones are a lifesaver I use them for everything now. No more subtitles at night! Edited by stratoaxe - 24 May 2013 at 10:33pm |

I overclocked my GPU on my laptop just because it struggled (I hate lappy GPUs) but haven't with this one yet. That's just standard clocking temps. |

It's the el cheapo power supply. I run PCs 24/7 and I'm sure I have dust. Unless you are sucking in so much dust that the machine can't breathe at all. Either way, I think all hobbyist PC builders figure at one point that a power supply is all the same, as long as all the connections are there. I worked in electronics for 10 years. They aren't all the same. The cheap power supplies just aren't built of quality components, and they die early. For what you spend on stacks of junk power supplies, you could buy one good one and be done with it. |

Much truth in what Shub is saying.
I did a lot of research on my rig when I bought and what I learned is that cheap power supplies don't usually have a ripple suppressor in them. These ripples over time wear down your electronics and also don't allow the PC to perform. There are a lot of stories in the Internet of bad PSUs messing up expensive GPU. I got my Corsair 850 watt for 140 bucks, way to cheap to risk a 300 dollar GPU (or worse if you're SLId) |

This. I build electronics currently, and I can tell you that those "cheap" parts made in "low-cost regions" are all P's of S. The quality of solder on a $12 part and a $10 part is obvious at a glance. And that's medical equipment; I'd hate to see what the consumer industry's quality standards are. Buy a soldering iron, the power supply can probably be repaired. |

My first new computer since buying a laptop in 2007... 24" Dell IPS, 8gb ram, 120gb SATA 3 SSD, 2GB Sapphire HD7850, Intel Core i3-3220 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz Feels amazing to have a real screen again, I can't believe I was editing photos on my laptop screen for all that time. Being able to play all the new games on max settings has also renewed my interesting videogames, which had fallen off quite a bit. |
