I have heard that too, and I don't know if it's true or not, but you aren't going to find any 4" barrels anywhere.  My thinking is that the rest of the barrel makes sure that the paint has a straight shot out of the barrel.  Shorter barrels like 8" are usually used only if you are playing front in speedball.  Otherwise the average length of a barrel for most people is 12".  Anything longer and then you start having to use more Co2/nitro per shot.

A great barrel for it's low cost is the Lapco BigShot, roughly around $55.  That's my suggestion, but it's all your choice.  To look at reviews of many different barrels, go to http://pbreview.com - http://pbreview.com

If I were you I would seriously look into a JJ ceramic[$35 @ actiovillage.com.  They are accurate and they are quiet compared to a lapco bigshot.  For $58 you can get empire's new twister barrel @ 888paintball.com.  those are really cool barrels

If u want accuracy then get a lapco bigshot.  It is arguably the most accurate barrel out there.

Bigshot...try and see if you can test out people's barrels at your local field and see what's best for you. And remember, size doesn't matter!

The only real difference is that the 12 would be better for woodsball!
