It regulates the amount of pressure that is going into your gun.  It will keep the pressure the same to make more consistant shots.  And if u notice, if you don't have a regulater, the last 100 shots of your co2 tank will begin to drop.  With a regulator, this wont happen.

Next time search, im sure that this has been ask a billion times.

but,

a regulator basically regulates down your air pressure. For example, an autococker has an operating pressure at about 300 or something like that. And pretend you have an High pressure nitro tank. The normal output pressure of it would be 850 psi. The regulator would regulate the pressure of the tank to the pressure that is need for you autococker to operate which is at 300 psi.
