I use the term "marker" for the simple purpose of preventing confusion. If I talk about a "paintball gun", people unfamiliar with the concepts of paintball tend to think I'm talking about a firearm.

Among paintball folk, though, I use the terms pretty much interchangeably.

I *try* use the term marker when I'm around people that don't play. I have guns, I have markers. I don't treat them the same at all.

I bet most of them know how to spell "dumb".

Politically Correct gets taken too far these days, but I use "marker" when around Republicans.

Me too, though I prefer marker actually. I have many guns and none of them use compressed air!

I would've thought you really were being sarcastic for a second there if you hadn't mispelled "they", "sarcasm", and "too".

EDIT: For those who are confused, he posted, I quoted and replied. While I was typing he deleted his old post because he forgot to quote mine at first.

Yep and not only that but a paintball "marker" is a gun according to any dictionary definition.

I guess we should start calling firearms permanent markers, to satisfy all the PC people.

I use gun, but I always emphasize the "paintball" in front of it.

If you're really so stupid that the term paintball gun offends you, what do we do? BB shooters, Water squirters, grease applicators? Come on... it's just a word.

That and I like real guns. So I don't have any problems with the word.

Webster's definition and colloquial (informal, real world) definition are entirely different concepts.

It does not seem 100% suitable to use the same word to refer to the Glock 21 in my closet and the AutoMag in the downstairs coat closet. They're only similar in shape and very basic function.

Thus, in effective conversation, it is acceptable (even while not being PC) to make a clear distinction between the two concepts for people who will not understand the difference.

The thing is, i dont really care about clarifying the difference for people. If someone is ignorant enough to take offense about using the term gun, that just shows me they dont deserve my expended energy in talking to them.

Both are mechanical items designed to launch a projectile. That makes it a gun.

The definition of a gun has no stipulation about what the launched projectile is designed to do, kill or mark, therefore i consider both to be a gun.

I frequently take teenagers out to play. My neighbor and I have entertained as many as 10 at a time.

When your trying to talk Mothers into letting their precious babies go out, start talking guns and getting killed, and you will get nowhere.
Talk about markers, getting marked out, and you might have some success.

"Marker"

PC has nothing to do with it, its all about scaring Moms who are sitting on the fence.

All of you 13 year olds know exactly what I am talking about. If you want a marker, and you want to play, then you talk nice around your Mom.

Crayola makes markers. The PC wing of paintball really messed up the sport. Mny of you won't remember, some of you wern't even born yet. Back in the early 90s there was a big debate about getting paintball into the mainstream by getting away from the war game image...hence the change in names. My gun magically became a marker...soon guns started to look less like a gun and more like a kids toy. Even BDUs dissappeared and now people wear bright colored team jerseys. Yeah thats all great....i you believe that this is not a war game, and you need to wear clown cloths and play with markers...lol
