Either no God, or the God of deists, based on observations in everyday life.

Yes, I do belive in God, it's simple, look around you. Do you think ALL that happened by a big bang or whatever? I don't. There had to be a creator.

The poster gave his opinion by the way he worded the question:

Do you believe in God? Answer yes or no, and go on to explain why.

In asking the question this way, the poster reveals that he assigns a specific identity to God; Like if I asked, "Do you believe in Shaquille O'Neal?"

But the key is, generally... You wouldn't.

Your non-belief would cause you to lean away from assigning a specific identity to "God", referring instead to a "deity" or "a God".

---

I'm not attempting to sound grandiose, only to point out something that people can use later on to hear one's opinions in their own questions. The way they phrase their questions indicates their expected answer.

Or so says Psych 101...

Oh, you're Jewish? Or Muslim? Or Christian? You didn't answer much there.

And actually, you're supposed to spell any deity's name with a capital first letter according to proper English grammar. That includes Satan, Allah, etc.

Hehe... Were that an honest question, I could offer an educated guess for an answer.

But since it was a sarcastic potshot, I'll say simply that you can't extract that specific of information from the question the original poster asked. This isn't tea leaves, it's the real science of human interaction.

Yes you're right generally you wouldn't but there will always be people who believe in him so when speaking I dont see anything wrong with a nonbeliever referring to God in such a way, not to mention you might prossibly offend people by saying "a god" or "a deity" rather than just "God" so since it doesn't matter to me I'd be more inclined to be polite about such a matter.

The person who started this thread could have just as easily been a nonbeliever.

Quick making assumptions.

The Israelites were Jewish. They believed a Messiah would come from God and that is currently what Jews still are "waiting for". I've gone to a Catholic school my entire life, I've read the Bible from front to back several times. Just because I don't believe it, doesn't mean I don't know it.

Or maybe someone was like, 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if we made Peter seem more important than he really is?' And then made up the bible.

Just a thought

Actually, according to most Christian denominations and the Catholic Church, anyone can get into Heaven if they live a good enough life. That includes atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Buddhists, people who lived in areas where there was/is no such thing as Christianity, etc. They just have a bit harder time getting in. Perhaps you should read up on your own Church's doctrines?

Man, I enjoy being Buddhist, but there's no way I'll end up in "Heaven." Buddhism is a self centered system of beliefs, a way to be content with ones self. I just don't want to come back as an insect in my next life.

Nope. Maybe the Catholics, but I don't know a single Protestant denomination who believes "works" can get you to Heaven.

They preach quite the opposite, in fact. According to their tenets, you have to be "born again" and believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God or it doesn't matter how kind you were to people.

Thats precisely why i don't believe in such nonsense like religion.

If you live a good life and treat others like you wish to be treated if there really is a Heaven you will go there.

I dont feel I need religion for me to be a good person and to do the right thing.

Not to mention like politics, there is a lot of corruption involved with religion.

Let's see... Perhaps because my father was a Nazarene minister and I grew up going to church 4x per week without fail, not to mention going to exclusively Christian schools until I was 15.

If that's not enough, I married the daughter of a Baptist minister who's now traveling as an evangelist.

I competed in hours upon hours of Bible quizzing and quizzing practice as a child. I had a dedicated Bible class one hour a day from 4th to 9th grade.

That's where I'm getting this stuff.

You're right. I'm another man. But I think I've proven by my posts here, in contrast to yours, that I have a much firmer grasp on reason, logic, and critical thinking than you do.

The fact is, you can't get into a discussion like this and hide behind your precious Bible, all the while asking people not to question your beliefs. The world doesn't work that way.

And, no, faith is not blind. If it were, then there would be nothing separating me from Osama Bin Laden. He has faith too, faith he operates on without question. Hitler had faith, too. As do all the other zealots, terrorists, and whack jobs who want to force their blindness on everyone else.

True, real faith is educated and informed.

Historical Fact:
Jesus was not the only Messiah at the time. There were lots of Messiahs. Another Messiah at the time named Apelonious of Tyana. He also in the first century was claimed by his followers that he healed the sick, he raised the dead, he was a ble to walk through walls and buildings, that he was infact persecuted for his beliefs and religious beliefs, he was brought to trial by the local Roman courts, he was crucified, and after he died he, we are told ascended into heaven and he came back where his followers saw him.

Note: this is not the Jesus story, Apelonious of Tyana.

Ya, faith is pretty much blind.

And as for God and Buddha, Zues, Satan, and Hades, etc, everyone has their own beliefs, and maybe there are multiple Gods(that is what i believe),  i am mixed with a Buddha belivin' mom, and Jesus and God believin' dad, and i have merged those two together to create my own little belief. So i belive in Goddha. lol, just kidding.

Sandman, I am pretty sure some Lutheran denominations believe in works.  Don't quote me, though.  Most denominations I come across that are strictly of the "saved/born-again" approach are not only Protestant, but Evangelical.

I think.  Maybe.

Okay, Big Jim. You refuse to say that you either have lacked faith before or that your idea of faith is slightly wrong. You also refuse to tell me your denomination.

Big Jim, you started this thread by saying "Do you believe in God? Answer yes or no, and go on to explain why.", that's a copy and paste, complete verbatim. So, Jim, it's your turn to answer your own poll. So far all you have done is accused Dune and myself of being destined to eternal damnation and argued (badly) with Sandman's logic.

What is your explanation, Big Jim? If you cannot yourself explain why you have a faith and that if you attempt to you are acting immorally, how can you expect others to answer this poll? Furthermore, by doing nothing more than rattling off pre-decided answers to questions, you are not performing your duty as a Christian, that is, to spread the faith as the early prophets and current evangelists do.

Please respond.

I rarely get into my real beliefs in these things but...

I believe in a god. I dont believe in jesus or buddah or allah or any worldly religions because i dont believe that human beings can ever understand god, or know what god wants or doesnt want.

I dont believe that any organized religion has the right idea. Everyone is too tied up arguing and killing over whos right. I believe that organized religions are just trumped up crap to make some power hungry priest feel important. Do we really need all the ceremony and nonsense catholics do? Does your omipotent all-caring god care whether you get splashed with holy water and preached to by some guy with a giant hat? Its all overboard, its all nonsense.

I do not believe that in 2000 years, any original truth in the bible could possibly have survived all the rewrites and translations and meddling from humans. We screw things up too much and put a spin on EVERYTHING and you think that we kept some supposedly holy book unchanged for 2000 years?

Heres what i say. Believe in what you want, as long as you BELIEVE it. Dont just take some puffed up holier than thou idiots word for it. Dont take some books word for it. What do YOU FEEL, that is what matters. Not some nonsense ceremony, not some lavish church, not some "worldly voice of god". What matters is YOU and GOD, whatever god you choose to worship. Spirituality is a personal thing, and it should be YOUR choice and YOUR beliefs, not some trendy crap thats been shoved down your throat by pastors and missionaries and annoying mormons. In my opinion, all the religions are really talking to the same big man, and if hes all hes cracked up to be, im sure hell understand if you didnt feel the need to go to sunday school to get closer to understanding.

I don't think organized relgion is right. Cause then all of these religions claim they are the "Right" religion. As long as you worship god and follow the bible, thats basicly all religion is and you can do that on your own. I don't think its right that we have all of these branches of christianity. But yes i still go to church every sunday and I am Catholic.

Christianity is not an organized religion? (Or a big group of them, meh)

In any case, I'll try the whole mathematical logic thing, since that seems to be popular today.

1. It is a Christian's duty to treat others as they would like to be treated. (Source: Beatitudes, AKA the "Golden Rule")
2. A Christian would not want to go to Hell. (Given)
3. Big Jim's beliefs as a Christian include that anyone who does not believe in God is destined to eternal damnation. (Source: His Church's doctrines)

From this you can deduce that Big Jim's duty as a Christian is to spread the word of God, so that those who do not currently believe in God have the chance not to burn for their beliefs. QED

Catholics are Christian. Baptists are Christian. There is a big difference, one example being a literal interpretation of the Bible as compared to people understand that Bible holds significance, but it not meant to be used as a history book. There are a lot of other examples, but I think the point has been proven. So you're a non-denominational Christian?

If you honestly had questioned your own faith as you said before, I'd expect you to realize that there is more to Christianity than one set of beliefs. Hell, I'd actually have expected you to even research completely different religions, even if only to strengthen your beliefs in your Christian ideas.

And nice dodging my last post, by the way.

EDIT: Not last post, the one where I challenged the adherence of your actions to your Christian teachings and stuff...

There are like 600 denominations of Christianity, can you specify a bit?

Why is a fancy church bad? What's wrong with sitting in nice comfy leather seats instead of sitting on wooden benches?

Special ceremonies...none? Not a chance dude. I guarantee that you do.

Just to clerify there is a big difference between Cathlosism and Christianity. I'll let Sandman explain cause I'll admit I have'nt been too sharp with my wording today.

I think Sandman realizes that Catholicism was the first religious organization to actually be considered "Christian". Every other Christian denomination roots from the Catholic Church, compliments of Calvinism and Martin Luther.

And on a larger scale, Christianity came from Judaism, as did Islam.

Do I believe in god? Yes.
Because thats the way I was raised, and had Religion class for the past 10 years of my life. (private school)But, Im more than likely leaving that school because I was sick of having it crammed down my throat every day in every way imaginable

Do I believe in telling people how to live their lives and force my beliefs onto them? No.
Why not? Because their is no more proof that christianity is in anyway the one true religion, than there is to support any other religion.

Okay, every other denomination except the Mormans, I stand corrected. Funny I should forget that because one of my best friends who moved away was a very active Morman. In any case, our friend here is not Morman.

Christian.  Why? raised that way.  No care to change, God is God and I believe in him.  Everyone has everything conceivable backing up the fact that God doens't exist/can't exist/impossible/things don't add up/"facts", but they left one thing out, and it's something that keeps most Christians going.  Faith.

Enos: If you read this.. yes you can worship God from your chair. Church meetings are, as far as I can tell, originated from "Where two or more are gathered together in my name, there I am with them."

And as for Catholicism.. I agree that a lot of it is unnecessary. The uniforms, holy water, rituals, using prayers as a counter to sin by repeating them, Hail Mary's (wherever they came from), confessions to priests, priests in general, praying to saints/Mary, etc etc is all stuff that as far as I know was never in the Bible.

Warning: If you are Catholic, this link WILL offend you. I didn't make it up, and I didn't mean to insult or offend anyone. If you think this link might drive you to acts of rage, don't click it!!

That's actually somewhat short sighted. The apostles and their followers were the first Christians. And, yes, they had their "churches", though they most often met in secret to escape persecution at the hands of the Romans.

The Catholics came around far later when the Western world embraced this Eastern religion. They became the basis for the Western practice of Christianity. They were NOT the first organization to claim to be servants of the Christ.

Judaism is the father of Christianity. As I understand it, the Jews (not the race, the religion) believe in the same God, but they believe His Messiah is yet to come. I'm no expert in their particular religion, but I believe that's the basis.

I stopped reading when they made a big deal about Baal.

If anyone has done some research on the subject of the origin of religion, then they'd know that zoroastrianism, the religion of the Persian's, was the root of any belief in angels and that kind of thing. A great deal of Christianity roots back to pagan religions, and not just Catholicism.
