I have a new one-piece 12" Smart Parts All American barrel. It's pretty quiet and accurate, but seems to be a gas hog...has anyone ever tried taping over some of the barrel porting? I have heard it suggested, but just wondering if anyone has ever tried this and/or gotten good results taping over some early porting to allow more time for the gas to expand. It seems now that the effective barrel length is only about 5" before porting robs me of gas . I don't really care if it increases the noise level, but I would like better efficiency and maybe better distance too. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I wanted a bigshot but for some odd reason decided on an all American (no bigshots in stock either)...the guy said he had used an all American in tournament play for 1 1/2 years, so I thought it was probably a good buy...but a new barrel is out for now....

Umm... taping up the porting bart of your Barrel robs your Accuracy... if your having bad Gass problems, then Chrono your marker and make sure its around 280-310fps. If that doesn't help your Gas problem look into buying a Vertical Adapter.
P.S. Dont Tape over the barrel... its not the barrel thats making your v02 shoot less its probably due to high accuracy.

There shouldn't be porting in the first 6-8in of the barrel. A barrel should have a solid, non-ported section at least 6in long. If yours is 5in, that porting is causing poor efficiency and probably reduced consistancy/accuracy.

Um ... What are you, dumb?
Make sure its 280-300 only. No field should be letting you walk on with 310 and you shouldn't be doing it in private games either. In fact some fields have 280 as the upper limit to decrease potential liability because so many people let their velocity creep up during games.

Your barrel has nothing to do with bad air efficiency. I personally own an All-American as well (12" 2 piece) as yourself and have no complaints. Like stated above it has more to do with your velocity.
P.S. The porting on my All-American doesn't start till about 6-7 inches down the barrel, perfect for any barrel.
P.S.S. Don't waste your time with taping up your port holes, I really doubt it will help your efficiency problem.

because of the high accuracy it shoots leess balls per tank? NO maybe because of the high velocity :-) gotcha panda man...

I am not sure if taping the ports is going to make a difference. Its most likley you have your velocity to high, cheak that.

I've heard a lot of factors contributing to gas inefficiency (sp), but a barrel?
If a barrel plays that big of a role in your gas consumption then I guess the 21" Thunderpig has to be the absolute worst.
But really why would so many Pro/Rec players use the All-American if it's "known to be a gas hog"?

Alright foolz, time to remove some of the bullcrap flying around in this thread. Unless you have installed a rear velocity adjuster, or a regulator or any other device that will control your velocity other than the stock velocity adjuster, you're barrel or velocity will not effect your gas usage. If you were shooting a spyder, cocker, heck just about any gun but a Tippmann, it would. The velocity of most guns is changed by changing how long the valve stays open, hence how much air it uses for each shot. Different barrels will give you different velocities, so you'll need to adjust it, changing your gas efficiency, with MOST guns. Tippmanns on the other hand, use a choke screw that blocks gas in the powertube. The same amount of gas is used for each shot, no matter the velocity. The air just hits the ball at different speeds depending on how much of the choke screw it has to go around. Taping your ports is just going to screw with your accuracy. Tippmanns in general are gas hogs, A-5's seem to be even moreso than most. If you're using CO2, shooting fast will lower your efficiency because liquid CO2 will enter the gun. That will probably also give you velocity spikes. Expansion chambers or remote lines will help this. Other than that, regulators and rear velocity adjusters will help give you better efficiency. Barrels aren't going to make a difference in efficiency until you ditch the primitive but effective choke screw method.

The choke screw either blocks air being sent out the valve or lets out a higher flow. When you unscrew the choke screw there is more air coming out than when the screw is in more. This is because the cvx valve stays open the same amount of time every shot when there's no rva or ebolt. If the same amount of gas was used whether the screw was in or out, the valve would have to stay open longer when the choke screw was in.
So while more porting makes the barrel quieter, it also forces you to use more gas to get the desired velocity.

I have had some incodinces where my Velocity has gon down around 10-15pbs thats why I said around 310. I do relize that is kinda High But it really wont hurt anything. But you are right its better to Stay around 280 then 300.
