I have a tippmann 68 (not pro/carbine) and was wondering if it would be better to upgrade it (if so, with what?) or go for the A5?

Well, if your going to be getting the A-5, you should get a new barrel. The Lapco Bigshot, SmartParts Teardrop and J&J Ceramic perform well. If you want nitro then Crossfire and Nitro Duck make reliable tanks. Otherwise get a expansion chamber or a remote line to help with liquid CO2. The R/T is a cheaper source for a higher ROF. The E-Grip is a bit more pricey but a more controllable way to increace ROF. Hope it helps!

By "Tippmann 68", do you mean a 68 Special?  If it is, hang on to that puppy!  I'm looking to find one for myself as a collector's item!  It was the first semi-auto I ever went up against when I first started playing.

Enos, I mean special.  This one's at least 15 years old, according to my dad, and that model came out long before that, as far as I know.

WhiteKnight, that's what I was thinking too.

You'll be hard-pressed to find upgrades for the 68-Special.  It is an old marker.  They are cool as hell, though!  You might be able to find a barrel for it, but it will take some looking.

I think it's probably seen better days, but it still works OK.  Out of four games I only got one person out and got hit each game, mostly due to minor but non field fixable mechanical failures.

It can't be 15 years old. SMG 68's weren't being made into 68 specials until 1991. So 13 years. Hehe, I'm such a stickler. Sorry, but yes keep it!!! It's a collector's item. Not worth much on ebay but you do have a peice of pb history!

There are some upgrades for your gun after all. With the upgrade kit, I'd prefer that over the A-5. Well, maybe...

See, it's the "maybe" part that makes me think it's a dress-up and not a performance enhancer.  Well, the longer barrel would help.

The splatmaster was not the gun that started paintball. It was one of the first guns manufactored for the sport. The gun that started paintball is the nelspot bolt-action. There's actually a lot of controversy about what gun started it all. For now most believe it was the nelspot.
Also, here are some upgrades you could do to your 68 special:

SL-68II Barrel
.45 Grip Adapter for the M-16 Grip
Sight
Bottomline/Drop/Rail/Unimount (only w/ the .45 adapter)
Gas-Thru Stock
Wood or Sticky Grips (only w/ .45 adapter)
Trigger work (lightened springs and the like)
Extreme Rage Overdrive Loader (9-10bps is fine for a 68)

The 68 Special and the SL-68II share the same barrel.  That's good to know.  Are there any mfgs besides J&J that make barrels for these markers?  Warbeak, where can you find the upgrades you mentioned?  I'm having a tough time finding anything other than a main drive spring for the Special.

Search around on ebay and in classifieds to get the grip adapter. CCI makes adapters to turn their m-16 grip Phantoms into .45 grip. I don't know if it will work on a 68 special though. Call/e-mail Mike Cassidy at CCI and he'll tell you. I'm pretty sure they will work on any gun that has an m-16 grip.

Stormy Knight if the 68 Special you have a line on falls through, drop me a line as I have two in working order.

They are a lot of fun to play with!

The 68-Special is a great marker and I still use mine fairly regularly when I play with friends. I usually let them trade off with my A-5 and I play with my -Specials. There really isn't much to upgrading a Special:

Both J&J and Smart Parts makes SL-68 barrels (those are the non-threaded barrels and the same as the 68-Special uses). I LOVE my J&J Ceramic barrels so much that I called J&J and had them make one for my SMG-68. It really quiets down the marker and even some of the old timers who did know what marker I was using were suprised when they saw it because they didn't hear "it" on the field. And I still get plenty of kills with it. The J&J is available from County Paintball (countypaintball.com - Mike is a member of this forum and a great guy) or direct from J&J and the SP barrel was also available from County Paintball, but I'm not sure if he still carries it.

A feed neck adapter is critical for all feeder upgrades and is still available from County Paintball. As far as the specific feeder, I would still suggest getting an agitated hopper. While the marker does bounce around enough that you can get by without one, I like my 12 volt Revolutions (I have the X-board in mine which is probably overkill & you may even be able to make due with the 9 volt version).

I also replaced my front grip with a vertical front grip. It makes it much more steady since it doesn't roll around like the stock one. Several are available from different online stores (search for vertical frontgrip) or on eBay.

Internally there are no aftermarket parts I know of except for cheap linkage arms. I am researching having some custom titanium ones made from a metalsmith on another forum (titanium is light and strong). Many parts including O-ring kits are available form PBSports ( http://www.pbsports.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=contact&cfid=358711&cftoken=92435518 - http://www.pbsports.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=contact&cfi d=358711&cftoken=92435518 )

Unlike most markers (as discussed above with the A-5), SMG series markers (including the 68-Special) NEED liquid CO2 to operate effectively. This means you need a siphon tank. Using an antisiphon tank on your 68-Special will rob it of power. I also prefer a larger (20oz) tank even though it makes it a little harder to aim.

Polishing the internals is actually not that effective because of the open rearbolt, but may help a little bit. More important is to make sure it is regularly opened, cleaned and lubricated. And make sure there is an O-ring on the front bolt. I have seen several 68-Specials without this and it can result in blowback, breaking paint in the feed neck or hopper.

As for the website below, these are cosmetic upgrades. Some are pretty nice, though they are plastic and not as durable as some of the mods avaiable for the A-5 and M-98/98C that are actually made from the parts of real firearms. I know Mr Cushman is also a contributor to this forum and will disagree but plastic is just not as strong as metal (though I am still looking at some of the packages just because they do look so good).

And to end, let us know about the technical problems you had with the marker. It may be something we can work on and prevent from happening again. Even if you do get an A-5, the 68-Specials are nearly indestructible and will give you good play for many more years to come if you treat them right.
