It's funny, we can all argue about which band is currently the best or who the worst band is, but what I think is funny, is that you can't count on any of the current bands today being around 5-10 years from now.  It seems like as soon as January 1st 1990 hit, there were no more bands that would hang around for very long.  I mean look, if you listen to your typical rock station, you will here anything from the rolling stones to audio slave and other current bands, but what I don't get is why there haven't been any steady bands since like the early 90's to now.  Take a look at aerosmith, they have been around since the early 70's and they are still making music, they just came out with there new Blues cd Honkin' on Bobo.  I think I hear more old music than newer, and I'm not really sure why, maybe today's bands just don't have what bands like The Stones, ACDC, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin and more all had.  The bands that I can think of that started in the early 90's and are still heard of today is maybe Pearl Jam, and Green Day.  I can't think of any bands from 5 years ago that we still hear on a regular basis.

So maybe what I'm trying to say as I've kind of confussed myself and probably the rest of you is that will we have any bands that we hear today to listen to 10 years down the road??  Or will we still be listening to oldies, (which doesn't bother me).

Whats your opinion on yesterdays and todays music?

Rancid has been around since '92 but they were around before that as Operation Ivy. Also, NOFX has been around for a looong time. Since the 80's I beleive. Just because MTV doesn't play them doesn't mean they're not still around.

If anyone senses that I made this post about my own personal bands that I like, thats not what I meant, also I'm not basing this on what MTV plays or VH1 plays, I'm talking about anything that plays music in general.

Also now that I think about it, the Red Hot Chilly Pepper's haven't done to bad..

Also some of the bands listed above in other peoples replies, I am not familiar with them, I'm sure that I know their songs, just not their name, but anyways thanks for pointing them out.

I knew about Operation Ivy, but there is no Operation Ivy anymore so I can't say they lasted.

My brother has an idea about this, seeing as how he's a musician himself.

There are only so many chord progressions and note combinations that are pleasing to the human ear. At a certain point, you run out. Our culture is getting fairly close to the point where there's nothing new and innovative in music, compared to the explosion of new ideas in the past few decades. Notice that each decade or two has its own brand of music, and sometimes music is classified as "50's rock" or whatever. Note from the late 80's to now, how the various types have started to blur, and there is no real hit sensational supremely popular music style.

Just a thought. Now watch some unknown nobody come out with a ridiculously cool new style of music and prove me wrong.

most the time i cant stand Rap with the exception of a few songs, my English Teacher plays us the rolling stones a lot and we have to write about it. i cant stand how MTV (aka MUSIC television) has reality T.V shows, that has nothing to do with music.

thanks for choosing to show your ignorance. i have no doubt that you will do it many more times...

What about 311? Arent they an "old" band? They still make good music.

And Paul Wall, Chamillion, Lil flip(altohugh he sold out and sux hardcore now, he had some good stuff with swisha house), Tupac, B.I.G.(though they may be dead, they made good music and i have no doubt they would still be making music in someway), all have been making music for at least 5 years. Altohugh you may not know the first two, they have been doing undergrround music for a long time now, and quite well i might say.
