I am talking about the most depressing song you have ever heard. I got a few:
- When The Tigers Broke Free - Pink Floyd (An Autobigraphical song of Roger Water's Father's death) If you have never heard it, it will make you cry, I did.
It was just before dawn One miserable morning in black 'forty four. When the forward commander Was told to sit tight When he asked that his men be withdrawn. And the Generals gave thanks As the other ranks held back The enemy tanks for a while. And the Anzio bridgehead Was held for the price Of a few hundred ordinary lives.
And kind old King George Sent Mother a note When he heard that father was gone. It was, I recall, In the form of a scroll, With gold leaf and all. And I found it one day In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away. And my eyes still grow damp to remember His Majesty signed With his own rubber stamp.
It was dark all around. There was frost in the ground When the tigers broke free. And no one survived From the Royal Fusiliers Company C. They were all left behind, Most of them dead, The rest of them dying. And that's how the High Command Took my daddy from me.
(his dad really died from a Shtuka Dive-Bomber's attack)
2. Another Day In Paradise - Phil Collins
3. Cat Stevens - Cats In The Cradle (my dad was like this for the better part of my childhood)

the one that goes....
Last kiss Pearl Jam Where, oh where, can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me Shes gone to heaven, so Ive got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave this world
We were out on a date in my daddys car We hadnt driven very far There in the road, straight ahead A car was stalled, the engine was dead
I couldnt stop, so I swerved to the right Ill never forget the sound that night The screamin tires, the bustin glass The painful scream that I heard last
Oh where, oh where, can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me Shes gone to heaven, so Ive got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave this world
When I woke up the rain was pourin down There were people standin all around Something warm flowing through my eyes But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said "Hold me darling, just a little while" I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss I found the love that I knew I had missed
Well now shes gone Even though I hold her tight I lost my love, my life, that night
Oh where, oh where, can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me Shes gone to heaven, so Ive got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave this world

Far Away Boys - Flogging Molly
Well I worked on the railroad For t'pence a day Drank down one penny The other I'd save I hammered and I hammered For God knows how long Well into madness, with each setting sun I put my head down and I dreamt you were here With me by the ol' tree, where no one could care
Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys Away from ya now I'm lyin' with my sweetheart In her arms I'll be found
Then the sun belched upon me You were no longer here Lyin' in your place was my hammer and my gear So I stamped out the fire that kept us both warm The ashes were fallin' Like the snow drops of old We came to a mountain Dynamite and she'll blow A big hole in that rock Like the one in my soul
Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys Away from ya now I'm lyin' with my sweetheart In her arms I'll be found
We buried four workmen They dug themselves well From four empty coffins, to four early graves They're only paddys, just paddys Don't dig them too deep You'll need all your strength boys And they're replaced easily With the heat I was melting Into your sweet lips Ah, your kiss takes me back Takes me back from all this
Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys Away from ya now I'm lyin' with my sweetheart In her arms I'll be found
Someone said it was Christmas But not a tree was in sight The only thing growin' was my will to die Till the gaffer said 'men, your work here is done' I said 'I'll see you in Hell, on that train we died for' Never again, will I smell your sweet dream But a pissed stained ol' gutter where: You lips used to be
Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys Away from ya now I'm lyin' with my sweetheart In her arms I'll be found

Those are good ones.
Um, for now i'm going to have to say No Lies Just
Love by Bright Eyes.
It was in the march of the winter I turned
seventeen
That I bought those pills
I thought I would need
And I wrote a letter to my family
Said it's not your fault
And you've been good to me
Just lately I've been feeling
Like I don't belong
Like the ground's not mine to walk upon
And I've heard that music
Echo through the house
Where my grandmother drank
By herself
And I sat watching a flower
As it was withering
I was embarrassed by its honesty
So I'd prefer to be remembered as a smiling face
Not this <freaking> wreck
That's taken its place
So please forgive what I have done
No you can't stay mad at the setting sun
Because we all get tired, I mean eventually
There is nothing left to do but sleep
But spring came bearing sunlight
Those persuasive rays
So I gave myself a few more days.
My salvation it came, quite suddenly
When Justin spoke very plainly
He said "Of course it's your decision,
But just so you know,
If you decide to leave,
Soon I will follow"
I wrote this for a baby
Who has yet to be born
My brother's first child
I hope that womb's not too warm
Cause it's cold out here
And it'll be quite a shock
To breathe this air
To discover loss
So I'd like to make some changes
Before you arive
So when your new eyes meet mine
They won't see no lies
Just love.
Just love.
I will be pure
No, no, I know i will be pure
Like snow, like gold
I'm pretty sure i cried the first time i heard that song.

meteora: pearl jam didn't write that song...they sang it as a joke at a concert and people actually liked it
Saddest song by far is Waltzing Matilda by Tom Waits
Most of you may not get the references...I know I had to look up alot of stuff whenever I listen to his stuff...This is the only song that ever made me cry
"Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did Got what I paid for now See ya tomorrow, hey Frank can I borrow A couple of bucks from you? To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me
I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley And tired of all these soldiers here No one speaks English and everything's broken And my Stacy's are soaking wet To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me
Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking A lot they can do for me I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open And I'm down on my knees tonight Old Bushmill's I staggered, you buried the dagger Your silhouette window light To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me
Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her And the one-armed bandit knows And the maverick Chinaman and the cold-blooded signs And the girls down by the strip-tease shows Go, waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me
No, I don't want your sympathy The fugitives say that the streets aren't for dreaming now Manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories They want a piece of the action anyhow Go, waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me
And you can ask any sailor and the keys from the jailor And the old men in wheelchairs know That Matilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred And she follows wherever you may go Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me
And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace And a wound that will never heal No primadonna, the perfume is on An old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey And goodnight to the street sweepers The night watchman flame keepers and goodnight to Matilda too"

TEARS IN HEAVEN
Written & Performed by: Eric Clapton
Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven.
Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven.
Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please.
Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven.
Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven.

I'll have to go with Bright Eyes as well.
A Perfect Sonnet.
Lately I've been wishing I had one desire
Something that would make me never want another
Something that would make it so that nothing matters
All would be clear then
But I guess I'll have to settle for a for a few brief moments
And watch it all dissolve into a single second
And try to write it down into a perfect sonnet
Or one foolish line
Because that's all that you'll get
So you'll have to accept
You are here and then you're gone
But I believe that lovers should be tied together and
Thrown into the ocean in the worst of weather
And left there to drown
Left there to drown
In their innocence
But as for me I'm coming to the final chapter
I read all of the pages and there is still no answer
Only all that was before I know must soon come after
That is the only way it can be
So I stand in the sun
And I breathe with my lungs
Trying to spare myself the weight of the truth
Saying everything you have ever seen was just a mirror
And you've spent your whole life sweating in an endless fever
And now you are laying ina bathtub full of freezing water
Wishing you were a ghost
But once you knew a girl and you named her lover
And danced with her in kitchens through the greenest summer
But autumn came, she disappeared
You can't remember where she said she was going to
But you know that she's gone
Because she left you a song
That you don't want to sing
We're singing, "I believe that lovers should be chained together
And thrown into a fire with their songs and letters
And left there to burn in their arrogance"
But as for me I'm coming to my final failure
I've killed myself with changes trying to make it better
But I still ended up becoming something other than what I had planned to be
Now I believe that lovers should be draped in flowers
And layed entwined together on a bed of clover
And left there to sleep
Left there to dream of their happiness
I like it.

I agree with Dark98 that "A Perfect Sonnet" by Bright Eyes is wayyyyy up there, but it doesn't make the top of my list.
The absolute saddest song I have ever heard is "Fast Car" by Xiu Xiu...
give it a listen. The lyrics don't really do the depressing-ness
"justice".
You got a fast car I want a ticket to anywhere Maybe we make a deal Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better Starting from zero got nothing to lose Maybe we'll make something But me myself I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car And I got a plan to get us out of here I been working at East side`s health and childrens centre Managed to save just a little bit of money We won't have to drive too far Just across the border and into the city You and I can both get jobs And finally see what it means to be living
You see my old man's got a problem He live with prescription drugs and that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working I say his body's too young to look like his My mama went off and left him She wanted more from life than he could give I said somebody's got to take care of him So I quit life and that's what I did
You got a fast car But is it fast enough so we can fly away We gotta make a decision We leave tonight or live and die this way
remember we were driving driving in your car speed so fast I felt like I was drunk City lights lay out before us And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder I had a feeling that I belonged I had feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car And we go cruising to entertain ourselves You still dont have a job And I work in a market as a checkout girl I know things will get better You'll find work and I'll get promoted We'll move out of the shelter Buy a big house and live in the suburbs
remember we were driving driving in your car speed so fast I felt like I was drunk City lights lay out before us And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder I had a feeling that I belonged I had feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car And I got a job that pays all our bills You stay out drinking late at the bar See more of your friends than you do your kids I'd always hoped for better Thought maybe together you and me would find it I got no plans I ain't going nowhere So take your fast car and keep on driving
remember we were driving driving in your car speed so fast I felt like I was drunk City lights lay out before us And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder I had a feeling that I belonged I had feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car But is it fast enough so we can fly away We gotta make a decision We leave tonight or live and die this way

Waltzing Matilda is a very old Austrailian
song. It's almost like Austrailia's anthem--Everybody
knows it down unda'.
I'm virtually certain that Tom Waits just does a
version of it.
I'm a huge Waits fan as well. If you haven't listened
to Bright Eyes you should give it a shot. Conor
Oberst is a little bit Waits-y.
--Edit--
Ejp, that's not an original Tracy Chapman song? I
know she does a version of it.... I always thought it
was her's.

In late 1990, the fates delivered Clapton a terrible blow when guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and Clapton road crew members Colin Smythe and Nigel Browne--all close friends of Clapton's--were killed in a helicopter crash. A few months later, he was dealt another cruel blow when Conor, his son by Italian model Lori Del Santo, fell forty-nine stories from Del Santo's Manhattan high-rise apartment to his death. Clapton channeled his shattering grief into writing the heart-wrenching 1992 Grammy-winning tribute to his son, "Tears in Heaven." (Clapton received a total of six Grammys that year for the single and for the album Unplugged.)

I was going to say Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss, but others have beat me to it. A newer song I've heard that isn't a radio single is Holy Water, by Big and Rich...kinda sad song.
But who wants to spend their lives listening to sad songs?

American Pie by Don Mclean.
I believe it was about the death of Buddy Hollie. It's an extremely powerful song.

I can't find the lyrics but The living years - Mike and the mechanics It's about a guy who had a bad relationship with his father growing up and he intends to set things straight and rectify their relationship but keeps on putting it off until he hears that his father died its purdah sad. and Cat's in the Cradle has made me cry before uhhh Oh yeah Hear you me - Jimmy Eat World
There's no one in town I know You gave us some place to go. I never said thank you for that. I thought I might get one more chance. What would you think of me now, so lucky, so strong, so proud? I never said thank you for that, now I'll never have a chance. May angels lead you in. Hear you me my friends. On sleepless roads the sleepless go. May angels lead you in. So what would you think of me now, so lucky, so strong, so proud? I never said thank you for that, now I'll never have a chance. May angels lead you in. Hear you me my friends. On sleepless roads the sleepless go. May angels lead you in. May angels lead you in. May angels lead you in. And if you were with me tonight, I'd sing to you just one more time. A song for a heart so big, god wouldn't let it live. May angels lead you in. Hear you me my friends. On sleepless roads the sleepless go. May angels lead you in. May angels lead you in. Hear you me my friends. On sleepless roads the sleepless go. May angels lead you in. May angels lead you in.
And your gonna hate me for this but Hold on - Good Charolotte
P.S. Why is it that whenever i start a music thread evybody ignores it but when somebody else gets one goin it gets anywhere from one -five full pages of responses??? nobody loves me

Ozzy Osbourne
I just want you
There are no unlockable doors
There are no unwinable wars
There are no unrightable wrongs
Or unsignable songs
There are no unbeatable odds
There are no believable gods
There are no unnameable names
Shall I say it again, yeah
There are no impossible dreams
There are no invisible seams
Each night when the day is through
I don’t ask much
I just want you
I just want you
There are no uncriminal crimes
There are no unrhymable rhymes
There are no identical twins or
Forgivable sins
There are no incurable ills
There are no unkillable thrills
One thing and you know it’s true,
I don’t ask much
I just want you
I just want you
I just want you
I just want you
I’m sick and tired of bein’ sick and tired
I used to go to bed so high and wired, yeah - yeah, yeah, yeah
I think I’ll buy myself some plastic water
I guess I should have married lennon’s daughter, yeah - yeah, yeah, yeah
There are no unachievable goals
There are no unsaveable souls
No legitimate kings or queens, do
You know what I mean? yeah
There are no indisputable truths
And there ain’t no fountain of youth
Each night when the day is through,
I don’t ask much
I just want you
I just want you
I just want you
I just want you
I just want you
I just want you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I just want you
I just want you,
Hey, yeah
I just want you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I just want you, hey
I just want you
I just want you
Ozzy Osbourne:
See You on The Other Side
Voices, a thousand, thousand voices
Whispering, the time has passed for choices
Golden days are passing over, yeah
I can’t seem to see you baby
Although my eyes are open wide
But I know I’ll see you once more
When I see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Yes, I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Leaving, I hate to see you cry
Grieving, I hate to say goodbye
Dust and ash forever, yeah
Though I know we mus be parted
As sure as stars are in the sky
I’m gonna see when it comes to glory
And I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Yes I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Never thought I’d feel like this
Strange to be alone, yeah
But we’ll be together
Carved in stone, carved in stone, carved in stone
Hold me, hold me thight, I’m falling
Far away. distant voices calling
I’m so cold. I need you darling, yeah
I was down, but now I’m flying
Straight across the great divide
I know you’re crying, but I’ll stop you crying
When I see you, I see you on the other side
Yes. I’ll see you. see you on the othe side
I’m gonna see you. see you on the other side
God knows I’ll see you, see you on the other side, yeah
I’ll see you. see you on the othe side
I’m gonna see you. see you on the other side
God knows I’ll see you, see you on the other side, yeah
I wanna see you, yeah, yeah, yeah, see you on the other side
God knows I’ll see you, see you on the other side, yeah
I’m gonna see you. see you on the other side

Thats not really true. Not trying to start any kinda of debate, its just that I cant stand to hear people say that. According to scriptures, all sins, past present and future are covered for those who are truly saved. So taking your life would not send you to hell. Well thats just something I had to throw in real quick.

Johnny's Daddy was taking him fishing
When he was eight years old
A little girl came through the front gate
Holding a fishing pole
His Dad looked down and smiled
Said "we can't leave her behind"
Son I know you don't want her to go
But someday you'll change your mind
And Johnny said
Take Jimmy Johnson
Take Tommy Thompson
Take my best friend Bo
Take anybody that you want as
Long as she don't go
Take any boy in the world
Daddy please - don't take the girl
Same old boy same sweet girl
Ten years down the road
He held her tight and kissed her lips
In front of the picture show
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm
Said "if you do what I tell you to do
There won't be any harm"
And Johnny said
Take my money
Take my wallet
Take my credit cards
Here's the watch that my grandpa gave me
Here's the key to my car
Mister give it a whirl
But please - don't take the girl
Same old boy same sweet girl
Five years down the road
There's gonna be a little one
And she says it's time to go
Doctor says the baby's fine
But you'll have to leave
Cause his momma's fading fast
And Johnny hit his knees
And there he prayed
Take the very breath you gave me
Take the heart from my chest
I'll gladly take her place
If you'll let me
Make this my last request
Take me out of this world
God please - don't take the girl

Most of pearl jam's earlier stuff was pretty sad. Jeremy, Betterman, Alive, Daughter, Even Flow, and Cordoury. All sad songs, I think Black is they're saddest.
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay,
were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul
as the earth to the sun.
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn.
Oooo ooo.
And all I taught her was everything.
Oooo ooo.
I know she gave me all that she wore
and now my bitter hands shake beneath the clouds
of what was everything?
All the pictures had all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play.
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
And twisted thoughts that spin round my head...
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning.
How quick the sun can drop away...
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
of what was everything?
All the pictures had all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad, turned my world to black
tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll ever be...yeah...
Uh huh.
Uh huh.
Ooo.
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
in somebody else's sky, but why
why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine?

Bah, if your own life isn't yours to end, who's is it?
Personally I like the Last Kiss by Pearl Jam, as well as the origional version.
And the Leader of the Pack is also pretty sad. By the
"Is she really going out with him?
Well there she is lets ask her
Betty is that Jimmey's ring your wearing
mhm
Je it must be great riding with him?
is he picking you up after school today
mm
by the way were did you meet him?
I met him at the candy store
He turned aroound and smiled at me
you get the picture
(yes we see)
that's when I fell for the leader of the pack
Brrm Brrm
My folks are always puting him down
(down,down)
they say he came from the wrong side of town
(what do you mean when you say the wrong side of town)
they told me he was bad
but I knew he was sad
that's why I fell for the leader of the pack
Brrm Brrm
one day my dad said find some one new
I had to tell my jimmy were through
(what do you mean when you say find someone new)
he stood there and asked me why
but all I could do was cry
I'm sorry I hurt you,the leader of the pack
brrm brrm
he sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
the tears were begining to show
as he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
Wether he heard i will never now
look out,look out,look out
I felt so helples what could I do
remembering all the things we went through
at school they all stopped and stared
I can't hide the tears but I don't care
I'll never forget him the leader of the pack
Brrm Brrm
the leader of the pack and now he's gone..."
