I haven't really posted about this much, but my dad has been in the process of buying a new building for his bicycle shop, since the local landlords are asking far more than his business can pay for a lease.

Well, it's been up and down over the last year or so, every week a new incident happens or something finally goes through.

But now I hit the part that, if I was still a naive little kid, would immediately flip out and ignore the potential for disaster here.

Apparently, back in the 1940's the railroad tracks that run next to the building had a siding that ran to the loading dock (which explains why it's a good three to four feet above the ground). Well, the person who bought the property after World War II decided they didn't want the three tanker cars parked there. So instead of having whatever served as the central railroad authority back then come and take them away... they dug a pit in the ground and buried all three.

Now the next owners discovered them somehow, and paid to have two pulled out. But the third is at least eighty feet long. So they left it and the short section of track down there and buried it again, leaving the top exposed. They used it to dump oil from their lawnmower repair business in there. Supposedly it's all pumped out now, but it's oil, so there's probably some left.

As a train enthusiast (as a child, a train maniac) I find this not just funny, but really cool. There's a train buried beneath my dad's business! Wahoo!

However, now there is the possibility that they might make him pay to have it dug out and removed.. which would be the final death stroke to this project. That or a backhoe digging up the concrete that's poured over the lid could hit the tanker, and blow it up. Unlikely, but possible.

So anyways, now I'm stuck wondering how many businesses around here that used to have railroad sidings have track or cars buried underneath their property.

At any rate, it's an interesting piece of history. Maybe if I become rich I'll pay to have it dug up so I can keep it.

Well, we don't know that yet. The city might finally decide that my dad's been through enough already, and I don't think it's an environmental hazard.

We'll see.

Hmm, odd. In a way, that's very cool. On the other hand, I really hope your dad doesn't have to move it. Good luck with that!

Hey cool, it's actually underneath the building itself. So basically it's impossible to get to anyway, so looks like we won't have to take it out.

Apparently the strange manhole cover we never figured out is the fill station. The concrete outside is just.. concrete.

My uncle buried one beneath his business back in the 60's to use as a bomb shelter. It turned out to be a cool place to have parties, there was room for at least twenty people, and no matter how loud you turned up the music, no one outside could hear it.

Ahahahahahahahahahahah!!!

Turns out the "tanker car" was left from the 20's when the building was a gas station, and the "gravel car" was a scale for weighing trucks.. just without the center pad.

Boy, we feel dumb now.

If you father is leasing it should be the property owner’s problem not his. A lawyer would know more but if I was him I would tell the landlord to go fly a kite in a lightning storm

that's still kind of funny if you think about it. I'd try to empty and clean it all out if I were you. It'd be a neat place to mess around.
