Subject: A-5 or Model 98 Help Plz

Since I am new to the sport and do not play in any tournaments yet I would like to get a pretty good recreational gun.  I am basically hanging out with my friends and going to the paint ball parks.  I currently rent now, but I am really looking into getting a Tippmann A-5.  A lot of people tell me the Model 98 is really good also.  I plan on spending about $400 to $500 for the gun accessories and upgrades.  Please let me know your thoughts on both guns and why I should buy 1 or the other.

Thank you

the 98c and a-5 are both very good guns. you will be satisfied with which ever you choose. so its really up to how you like the feel of the gun. i owned and a-5, but right now i would buy a 98c.

i didnt like how it didnt have a standard grip grame. and i had an e-grip so i couldnt buy the j&j. I also hated the cyclone feed. its big, and is really rough with brittle paint.

although i recomend playing with your gun stock for a bit, the upgrades i would recoemnd are

barrel: jj, lapco, cp
vertical adapter + expanson chamber: dop, gta
double trigger: gta
hopper: 12v revvy, ricco
drop forward or rail. im a fan of rails over drop forwards.

if you have the money left, maybe an r/t. but dont forget to leave money to buy a mask, pack, and co2 tank.

do some custom mods as well. polish the inner reciever halves, trigger mods, etc. you can see them all at www.model98.net

i would go w/ 98c

alot easier to customize..and i dont like the cyclone either..jus buy  for a revvy or somin..looks cooler

and first things to do w/ a 98c is drop it, barrel, double trigger, and 20oz'er..then those systems or whatever that are on this site

I have an a-5 myself. its a pretty good gun. but im dissapointed because i just got into speed ball and tippmanns cant be upgraded to be speed ball material.  I would just get a bko with a 12 volt revy, and a cheap nitro tank. ur better off. or maybe a cocker and eventually upgrade to an eblade or race frame.

if u still just want either and a-5 or 98c, definately the a-5.

well a-5 and 98 pretty much same except for looks and feel ur preferance, but not true cyclone will beat any hopper, cyclone is ugly but a perfect desighn and function ur garunteed to NEVER get a ball chop wich u can get with a revy especialy in heavy fire

i have no clue what your trying to say, but if your trying to say that the cyclone is faster than any other hopper, your wrong. cyclones can only feed at a rate around 15-16bps.

Lots of people say they hate the Cyclone. I can't really judge because I've never used an A-5. I've used a 98c before, and that would be my choice.

A lot of people on this forum will tell you that the A5 is the best. I mostly disagree. For the most part they have the same basic internals. Supposedly, a stock a5 can cycle faster than a stock 98, though.  I don't really like a5's that much. I don't like the cyclone feed. I'd rather have more of a choice a be able pick an electro hopper for it. I don't really like the way the a5 looks either. I mean if you want to play speedball, the a5 is a decent gun when upgraded, but it looks kinda goofy playing speedball with a gun modeled after an mp5. One more thing, you can get the ebolt for the 98c, but not for the a5. Just the egrip.

I own a model 98 and A-5, and i prefer the A-5. I love the cyclone, it feeds fast and reliably, and i prefer it over my revvy. The 2nd biggest advantage of the A-5 IMO is how easily it field strips. I can completely take it apart in no time at all for cleaning ball breaks on a basic cleaning after a short day of playing. However on the 98 every time you clean it you must remove all of the screws, clean it, make sure you have all the small pieces that get easily lost (especialy at a field), and the put it back together and screw all of the screws back in. The grip isnt a problem for me becasue I am right handed, but i can see how it would be a problem for a left handed player. While the e-bolt is better, the e-grip is much simpler to  install, and much cheaper. The A-5 also has a smaller and easier to install flatline, and a stock vertical ASA. However the A-5 isnt without fault, it does require a grip block adapter to add a drop and the cyclone does tend to get in the way when shotting right handed

I'd say A5.  If you already had a 98/98c I'd say you should stick with it, but without one of those two I'd definetly say A5, cause of the Cyclone's ability to load faster than your finger will ever pull, and if you get an E-grip for it, It'll shoot plenty fast for any of your needs.  people who think a good speedball gun has to shoot at least 30 BPS are crazy, you can't adjust your aim fast enough to not waste paint.

Thanks for all the advice.  I will probably go with the A-5 if I want to go that right.  I am almost thinking of saving a little more money and getting an Autococker Outkast.

honestly, i would go with the a5 or get an electro spyder like the pilot or the 2k4 imagine which both outshoot either tippmann, it also depends on what kind of playing you want to do say if u want to play speedball the cycle feed is an easy target but a spyder works out good for it and a m98 with r/t works good too but if you were going to play woods i strongly suggest the a5. as far as saving your money up for an autococker its not a good idea to get one for your first gun because they are a high maintnence gun because of the moving parts the a5 has the cyclone feed which is set with the timing of the gun so if you get your gun to shoot 20 bps (probably impossible) then the cycle feed will keep up with it its better than going out and buying a hopper than you dont know if it will keep up with the gun or not, whichever gun you choose though make sure you get a decent barrel because the 98 a5 and spyders all have crappy stock barrels, i reccomend the j&j ceramic, custom products 1 piece classic or smart parts progressive or teardrop(same barrel just the teardrop has custom milling on the porting causing it to be $10.00 more expensive).

Really the 98c and the a-5 are relatively the same marker. They both fire the same shot. But if your looking to upgrade the a-5 is ready for a faster rate of fire w/ its cylone feed system. But the a-5 sucks down the CO2 .

I would get an electro spyder.

Personally I could think of a few other markers I'd rather spend $250 on than an A-5. I modified my 98 last winter because after having it for a couple of years, I didn't use it that much because of the slow rof and bad accuracy from the crappy .702 bore(I measured it with a dial caliper) short barrel. By just doing some basically free mods that I got from a site that was posted here, throwing a J&J ceramic on it and getting a Maddman spring kit, I noticed a considerable difference in my attitude towards using it. The first time I used it after modifying it, I thought I'd use it to conserve on paint for it's slower rof. Well surprisingly I shot 600 rounds through it in that one game and pwned. A very impressive difference after spending little funds and a little time with it -

If you like to tinker a little and don't mind spending a little on a new barrel such as the J&J ceramic, I think the 98C would be a nice starter marker for you. If I had the link to that site I'd post it for you here but I lost it when I moved. After you've gained a little experience then spend a little more on something and keep your 98 as a reliable backup. I would deter you from spending alot of cash upgrading it because you'll be disappointed in the resale even if you throw a bunch of cash into it -

I would buy an A5, my brother has a 98c (the one listed below post) and while its good the a5 is definitaly worth the cost.

Gun: 210

Upgrades: flatline, expansion chamber, Dbl Trigger, total 152.95 on ebay. the cyclone feed and Rt trigger are perfect together, never misfire or break/jam a ball. With a 98c you need a nice hopper 60-200$ which doesn't promise good ball feeding all the time. I got a really nice A5 off Ebay $300 w/ rt, stock and 14in. Barrel i prefer A5 for the comfort of it and the upgrade ability and if you want an e-grip the 98c's is a lot more than the A5.

Ebay has great packages for 500 and less w/ more than mine go wtih the A5 more cost effective.

I would go for the A-5. I own one, and my friend has an upgraded 98 (Flatline, stock, all of the good stuff) and I would take the A-5 any day. I have a 21" CMI rifled Thunder Pig; and a collaspe-able stock for tight places, and I love it. I have never broken a ball in it either. Very reliable gun. Go for the A-5.

i have an A-5, but since you are starting out get a 98 cuz you wnt get so frustrated like me b4 about Co2 efficiency problems. or if you have the money get the A-5 with palmer stabilizer.

your choice.....remember, its always about personal reference....
