Yep, I've heard about this..It doesn't ban all assault weapons..just ones produced before 1984, or something...Pretty pointless...

Why would anyone need a semi automatic assualt weapon?  I mean seriously, no one has any need for them.  I'm not one of those anti-gun people, but those kinds of guns arn't really necessary are they?

The brady act isn't expiring the Assault Weapons Ban is. It banned guns by cosmetic features not funtion. It also made production of high capacity magazine for civilian use illegal. It was inacted in 1994. Go to http://www.awbansunset.com - http://www.awbansunset.com  for more info.

The assault weapons ban was pointless anyway. The anti gun crowd is predicting blood in the streets, but all 16 of the guns banned can be bought now with high capacity mags as long as they don't have more than two out the the three following features; bayonet lug (how many times have you heard of someone being bayonetted with an assault rifle?), pistol grip, or a flash supressor. Collapsible stocks are also disallowed.

Even with none of the above evil features, the guns shoot just as fast, just as far, and just as hard as those that do have them.

They only banned assault weapons(they have to be select-fire to be considered assault rifles BTW) because they "look scary".

I'm having a party on Monday. The so called AWB is/was a joke. My AR-15 which is considered post ban fires the same way/bullet/rof as a pre ban AR. The "ban" was PC politics at best and thank God its gone.

It had nothing to do with public safety, it was all about getting the soccer mom vote.

18 for rifles or shotguns, 21 for handguns. It might be different in your state though.

I didn't say all assault weapons but I think it's good we can have larger magazines, flash suppressors, and foldable stocks. The Brady act was really just a feel good law that had no point.

But this is America, TKD - "NEED" isn't the correct standard.  "WHY" isn't the correct question.

The correct question is "WHY NOT?"

And the answer, in the case of the Silly Ban of 1996, is that weapons were banned by the AWB based on cosmetics only.  With the exception of the large-capacity magazine, all the other criteria in the AWB were cosmetic.  IOW, the AWB prohibited certain weapons because they looked scary.

That ain't the American way.

Does anybody "need" an authentic-looking semi-automatic Kalashnikov?  Of course not.  But I don't "need" the three different tips for my Freak either.

The AWB did nothing useful, and was an embarassment to the entire country.  Good riddance.

I like how the AWB is going to do the exact oppsite of what it was supposed to.. Sept. 14 thousands of so called Assult weapons will be sold because gun lovers are afraid they will be banned again.

Too bad I live in CA..or I'd be on my way to the gun shop to get a few too. I think I might have to move just so I can buy a AR-15.

Simpy because something is fun does not make it a good idea. I am sure that blowing up junk cars with TNT is fun, but it is quite stupid to think that everyone above the age of 18 should be allowed to do it even with a permit.

It is a lot easier to understand if you can grip one simple priciple:

People are infinitely stupid.

I would also say that anyone pointing a .454 magnum at your head would look scary, but those are still legal.

http://butlercreek.com/press_r.asp?lineid=61322 - Here's a good link for you. Hopefully they'll also start making the 50 round clips again too. I still have some, but I kept most of them packed away because I didn't want to wear them out if they were going to be banned forever :)

Don't know if anyone said this yet... but the ban was only preventing companies from importing certain semi-automatic assault weapons. Those particular weapons were still available to anybody who wanted them. I have an SKS with the metal fittings for attaching a grenade launcher, and my Uncle's AK47 has a flash suppressor, pistol grip, 30 round banana clip, and folding stock. He owned this legally, before the ban ended. I'm positive he owned it legally because his house was searched by the cops one time, and they examined his gun collection. He had to explain a sawed off shotgun, that was just 1 inch away from being illegal to own.

went to the gun shop the other day, they said they had nothing new and didnt plan on it. like ^ said, the law only prevents inportation. it doesnt make certaing guns illegle.

anyway, they had a 1978 AR-15 for $980, and a repro military style Thompson for $650. im definatly thinking about the Thompson, and a drum magazine.

they were also selling 50rd 10/22 mags for $80 though.

I would love to own a Thompson. My Uncle just sent me a Yugoslavian 98k Mauser 8mm with a bayonet. It's your basic kraut rifle. Even got the ammunition with stripper clips and bandoliers that was produced during WW1. I get to inheret all 50-some of my Uncles guns.

Good thing they didn't find his pot stash, I don't think a measuring ruler would be able to explain that.

Why do you need a Katana? Or Martial Arts classes? or Pepsi?

You need none of them, yet all could have a case made against them of being harmful to people, even lethal.

You don't ban things because you don't like them, or don't have a good reason to have them. You ban things because you have a sound, logical, major reason NOT to have them.
