My question is why, if there is a 98 custom, is the regular 98 still being made and sold? Is there anything special about it that the 98 custom doesn't have?

Apparently they still sell, otherwise, Tippmann wouldn't keep distributing them and making them.

Yeah, I think Tippmann discontined them but since they sold so many of the Model 98s they are still around.

Take a look in your local WalMart. There are blister packs with Model 98s in them. I suspect they're the turn-ins from "send in your Model 98 and we'll upgrade it to a Custom 98 for X dollars)" bodies. New internals, reworked bodies.

My local shop got a shipment of new ones over the summer. They made a cool metallic blue one.

But don't you think that if they stopped making 98 regulars, people would start buying the 98c? They're the same price (roughly) so why not scrap that?
I know you guys aren't the tippmann CEO's or anything but one of you might know.

They don't make them anymore, but they still have enough lying around to sell and make money off of.

WallMart has a brutal buying tactic. They force manufacturers to provide super cheap products. So Manufacturers find ways to scrimp to reduce the price. The VCR you get such a great deal on at Wall Mart is not the same one you muy at another retailer. Even if it is the same model number.
So as a paintball supplier, Tippmann's solution to the lower priced product is the watered down 98. They cut corners on the mold, minimize the trigger parts, and walla, Wall Mart gets their cheap product to sell.

Yep, cast aluminum. If it was milled from aircraft grade aluminum, they would cost a thousand dollars.

What are you talking about kevin?? The tippmanns in walmart arent some
"cheap version", theyre model 98s. Maybe you need y=to read your
paintball history, the m98 was the precursor to the 98 custom.
I would guess pump scout got it right, theyre just traded in m98 shells with new internals.

Sorry Enos, I think you may be wrong this time. Kevin is correct, I have heard the same thing before. But Im not sure if it applies to paintball markers. I heard it about electronic equipment. This is why most of the stuff you buy at Wallmart breaks after it is used a few times.
Im sure paintball markers are like other mass produced guns. You can still buy Russian and Chineese veitnam era weapons brand new in the box. Its that just so many were made, many are probably sitting around in warehouses somewhere.

Beats me. The only difference i've noticed is the gills on the m98 and the trigger guard doesn't come off like on the 98c.

Yes, but he asked why the 98 is still being sold. The only place I have seen a NEW 98 is at Wallmart. And Wallmart pushes manufacturers for a cheaper product than they distribute to other retailers.

still around cuz they r less inexpensive and are easier 2 maintain...they mainly sell 2 feilds as rental guns now...there nothing really bad about them, they r realiable, they just came out with a more customizable version....the question you should be asking is why the discontinues the sl-68...now that was a sweet gun, and wicked powerful...u could even retro fit it w/ autocoker stuff to pump itslef(autococker are pump guns but pump themselves 4 those of u who don't no)
