Feed for a miniature donkey or horse runs about $7 a week. Occasional hoof trimming may be required every 6 to 8 weeks, and runs $20 to $40, depending on where you live. Check you local ordinances, miniature donkeys are considered livestock, not pets, and may not be permitted in your neighborhood.

Don't forget the INITIAL costs, a miniature will cost at least a grand or two, depending on it's age when you pick it up.
Livestock also needs to be 'wormed' every month or so, which is a $20 and up investment a month.
Feeding it is also a neat chore, as hay runs anywhere from $1.00 to $2.00 a bale, and they'll go through almost a full bale of hay a day.
They don't make really good pets. My suggestion, is get a mouse.

Worming should only be necessary twice a year, worming paste costs $7 to $10 a tube. Good hay runs $7 a bale, a full size horse will go through a 50 lb bale of hay in an average of 2.5 days. You can buy 50 lb bags of feed pellets for $7 or so at Costco, or a feed store. Pellets are more easily stored that hay, and won't make a mess in you car if you don't have a truck to carry it in.
The price for a miniature donkey or horse is variable. I've seen them go for $50 to $1000, seldom higher. Livestock auctions that sell horses are you best bet for finding an inexpensive donkey or horse.
The minimum bidding price reflects the price per pound that a slaugherhouse will get at market, usually $550 or so for a 900 lb horse. An 80 pound donkey will be considerably less expensive, the average price for a miniature or small donkey is $125.

I used to have horses, and they were a huge pain. They cost so much money to keep. With hay, grain, vet bills, wormers, and just all the work involved. When the last one died, it was 26, I believe.

Traveler, there must be a severe difference in pricing between where you and I are.
I pay 2 bucks tops for a bale of good hay.

Oh, incidentally, those round bales of hay are now illegal.

I'm talking about alfalfa or timothy hay. I live in S Florida, so it has to be shipped in from further north. I've had to pay as much as $25 a bale in Alaska.
I have a horse at my mom's place in west Texas, she pays $5.25 a bale for alfalfa hay out of El Paso.
