I am new to paintball and so far I had my 98 Custom for a week now and I
love it. I just don't like the barrel since it has no accuracy what so ever. I'm thinking of getting a rifled barrel from either Empire, Pathogen, or Armson. I'm would like to use a 13" or 16" Armson since it seems better but I would like another opinion. Are their any cons to the ones listed and are their any better ones under $75 in terms of accuracy? I will probably play mostly in my backyard which is a forest/swamp. |

under $75.... maybe dye ultralite, smartparts all american, and many others, but the best would be the flatline. try to get a good deal on e-bay. -------------

Using anything larger than a 14 inch barrel is not recommended, as they do not improve accuracy. My 14 inch Lapco Bigshot is very nice. Many players use them. A variety of paint will work in them, as the barrel is a medium bore size, but I find that Marbalizers work the best. Search other topics regarding barrels and you will keep hearing the Lapco Bigshot come up. I wouldn't get an Armson Stealth, the company tends to mess up on
making it for the 98 custom, by having the threads not fit. If I
were you I would go with something like a J&J Ceramic, or a Lapco

The J&J is amazing it is really quiet and is pretty accurate and it is cheaper than most other barrels too.

As far as the threads, is that because there are two types for the 98 Custom? I was reading their site and according to them, serial numbers under 400,000 something have different threads in which they make a barrel for those threads only. Also, anyone know anything about the Pathogen and Empire Twister? |

lapco bigshot is better than the j&j, but is like 10 or 20 $ more expencive... if you want accuracy, get one of them, or a kit (kits are $$$ tho) if you wnat distance, well, youre forced to get the flatline |

Get either a Bigshot or J&J Ceramic. I have both and like the Ceramic the most. It's quiet and it's just as accurate as the Bigshot. I have dye boomstick and i love it. But, my brother has a lapco bigshot
and it is just as good. except i payed 100 for my barrel and he payed
50 for his. So i would highly recoment the bigshot.

Now I've got proof! Everyone told me to get a Boomstick instead of my Ceramic and since the Ceramic is as good as the Bigshot, I have a Boomstick quality barrel. Yea!Posted By: MVNScrub

Go with the j&j but if you really want something thats accurate i suggest the dye boomstick, only problem is it costs 110 dollars....mayb not worth the money if your not playing often. -------------

MVNScrub is right about the boomstick they are very accurate but expensive. I got a Lapco Bigshot and its quite accurate. I got the tippmann 14in sniper barrel. I paied 50 for it and i paied 110 for my dye boomb stick and its sad to say the the shorter barrel is just as accurate as the 18in boomb stick. ------------- My set up: Tippmann 98 custom, x-chamber,R/T,18in dye boomb stick, and a tippmann GTA 14in sniper, custom paintjob. |

The Ultralight really is light, and a really good barrel. With marbs I can hit people at flatline ranges (of course, using advanced lobbing skills) and still get breaks (also not from barrel) because its got a really good (small) spread with marbs. So far I'm being recommended to buy smooth-bore barrels rather than
rifled. I'm wondering, how come smooth bore is better vs. rifled? It seems to go against what I know (though my knowledge of paintball is limited, I have a good knowledge of guns). |

Rifling causes projectiles to spin. Now that that is said, imagine throwing a football in a spiral. Goes straight and true. Now imagine a baseball picture throwing a curve ball. See the difference? Bullets are football shaped and paintballs are baseball shaped. Any spin will throw it off badly. And Armson doesn't put 'real' rifling on. But what about the old Kentuckey Rifle which used a musket ball and was
rifled? That was more accurate than a smooth-bore. Anyway, if Armson doesn't truely rifle their barrels, isn't that false advertisement? |

I've never used the lapco bigshot or the J&J ceramic, but if getting a good barrel for a good price is what you're looking for, I'd go for the SmartParts Boss Progressive 12" ( $35 ) I have it on my 98c and it is very accurate compared to the 12" Tippmann sniper barrel ( $55 ) that I was using before. Added bonus is that my gun is now twice as quiet as it was before. The honing in the barrel is identical to that of the Freak Jr. ( $99 ) barrel, making it almost just as good of a barrel, for less than half the price. Hope that helps you out. |

Neither it affects sound. If a barrel is ported it is quieter that one
that is not. It has more places than just one for the gas to go out.
Although it is quieter it also uses more gas than a non-ported. |

In alot of smooth bore muskets the musket balls would bounce around while traveling down the barrel. So if you seen any picutes of that kentucky rifled musket look at the size comparison of the barrel to a musket ball. I have never looked at one its just a thought. Also, did the kentucky rifle use musket balls or minnie balls. |

The Kentuckey Rifle (which was rifled) used musket balls since the Minnie
Ball wasn't invented yet. This is why I would think a rifled barrel would make a paintball gun more accurate but it seems to make no difference. |

No. Any of the barrels listed will be fine. Much more important to your accuracy is going to be the paint you use. The better the paint the better your accuracy wil lususally be. Keep everything clean and in good working order and the choice of barrel won't make much difference at all. ------------- Didn't I say, "No Guns for the Monkey?"
