My topic for this rant is our voting system, and the ignorance that comes with it.
Ok, so i see these mtv ads for getting people to register to vote so they can voice their opinion. When i was watching the comercial, i saw one person that stood out, mainly for the way he looked. He looked like the mis-informed type of guy. The one that would be inclined to make a wrong descision based on what he knows. I know this is wrong of me, but whatever. It got me thinking even more.
How is it that one vote from a complete idiot that will only go for one candidate because the people they know are all going for that person can equal a vote from someone like sandman or oldsoldier? How is it that someone who is voting for one person simply because he likes the way the name sounds count as much as someone that has their life based around politics?
Example: I have a friend that gets into really heated debates about politics. His main points? Well, he constantly says that kerry is nothing but a "<female dog> that lies". He says that at least bush can get us past 9/11 and at least he isnt hiding under his desk like any democrat would. But wait, it gets better. There is someone here who is running for congress. His last opponent was a guy named George Fastuca. My friend is willing to argue with me until the end of time the Fastuca should be the one in congress, not Ted poe, simply because he has a cooler name. Now, this is the same person that hates democrats no matter what. Geroge Fastuca was the Democrat in the election.
My friend doesnt even know who is running for what party. And yet he is going to count as much as everyone else who votes. Does ayone else see a problem with this? I find it funny/sad that the population was entrusted to be smart enough to pick the better candidate, when there are many people like him that are gonna be voting.
I dont know of any effective solutions to this problem, but i needed to yell at someone, and no one listens to me at school, and my mommy's asleep.

you need to use the "freedoms" that you have even though your voting system is messed up. people should care more about whats going around them

Yeah i agree with your friend that atleast bush is getting passed it unlike the democrat who would infact be under his desk but thinkin someone will win cause of their name is just stupid though if theres more people like your friend i wont be suprised if the guy with the cooler name does infact win

thats the point of the electoral collage they are "supposed" to vote with the people but since they are better informed they make their own choise as to who they believe should run the country. also please understand the system of voting before ranting about its problems i acually cant think of a better one

Fastuca already lost, but its more than a year later and he will still say how fastuca would be a better congressman.

so you are against straight ticket voting?????
Do you really know what you are talking about anyway?
Democrat, and republican are just labels. Different candidates are
going to stand for different things. If what that candidate wanst is in
your best interest then by golly, that who you should really vote for.
Our biggest concern in Michigan is how to get this *edited* of a
governer out of office. She cut every single penny of funding that she
could. She hasn't spent a dime. Then I started to recently hear about
very small projects that are springing up funded by the state. They cut
millions from schools. Now they are gonna spend 2 million making a new
park along the Detroit River, as well as a Detroit Municipal Marina.
I want a governer that is gonna restore funding. Especially to the roads, school, and emergency services.

I honestly think that some people should count more than other in the voting process. There are way more morons in this country than there areinformed citezens.
I saw what you said after i posted. And i know plenty about the electoral college and all that crap. We went over it today in US history. People vote. The party with the most votes send their representitives out to vote in washing shortly after the normal person gets to vote. The democrats choose the democrat, the republicans chooes the republicans, usually. Who ever gets the most votes wins.
But what election is that for? The president. Is it like that for everything? I dont think it is(correct me if im wrong).
But it doesnt matter who gets to choose who the president is in the end, because that moron will have as much say as someone who knows enough about politics.

wrong.
people vote. whichever candidate wins the popular vote in a certain state recieves that states electoral votes. minnesota has 8, california has 54 i think. so say bush gets 75 percent of the votes in minnesota, and kerry gets 25. bush would recieve 8 electoral votes from minnesota. this goes on for every state and who ever has the most electoral votes at the end wins.
that was weird so if it doesnt make sense ill try again.
i cant believe you think some people should count for more than others in voting. the last time that happened was the 1800's with slavery and stuff. black people counted as 3/5 of a vote.

Anyway, he is right, a candidate can win the popular vote and still not become the president due to more electoral college members voting for the other guy.

That is how Bush won the 2000 election. Al Gore had more popular votes,
however, Bush won the states that had more population, therefore, more
electoral college votes.

So your really going to be mad when in this upcoming election, I vote for nothing but the opposite of what I would normally vote? And it is going to count just as much as everyone's correct vote.
It is your right to vote for whomever and for whatever you darn well want to.

Good Lord people... Learn your history.
Gatyr is right. The Electoral College doesn't HAVE TO vote the way the population does, that's just the way it usually works, because if they go against party lines, they'll be outcasts in their party.
Black people/slaves counted as 3/5 of a person for the purposes of counting population in the southern states (and thus taxation and congressional representatives). That compromise was reached during the Constitutional Convention. Black people never had 3/5 of a vote, they counted as 3/5 of a person up until they were granted citezenship. They went straight from having no vote to having a full vote.
Don't spout off arrogance if you don't know what you're talking about.

I could care less who votes for who, or who wins. I dont pay attention to politics, and i will prolly vote for a 3rd party just so I dont end up voting for someone who gets elected, much less someone who gets elected and is a moron while the president. Thats if i choose to vote at all.
What i really care about is people like my friend I described in my original post voting out of ignorance, and electing the unfit candidate, who ever that may be. Like I said, im not going to vote. Why should i have a say in something I know very little about? Why should anyone else if they know as much or less than me?

its funny how the majority of people can vote for someone, yet that person can lose. kinda makes you feel like your voice isnt heard.
ex. 30 people in a class are voting on something, 14 say yes, 16 say no, but the teacher says yes so even though most people picked no yes still wins.
i think the way our elections are run, is why half of elegable people dont vote. if everyones vote was counted (popular vote) than more people would want to vote because there voice would be heard more.
BUNKERED, thanks for straiting quizl out. im just going to add a little. blacks where considered property to the northerners (SP?), yet the south wanted them to count as a person (increasing there population) so they would have more power in congress, anyway its one of the many things that leaded up to the civil war.
