In case any of my loyal fans happened to notice my absence for a few days, I was down in Virginia for the 140th Anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek. It was quite possibly the Best Reenactment I've ever done.

We had several thousand reenactors there, the numbers weren't ever confirmed, but there was easily between 8 and 10 thousand guys on the field.

It rained all weekend, and it was colder than hell, the wind was god awful, we had 3 hours of field drills on Sat. morning, starting at 7am, we spent 11 hours on the road yesterday, from 3:30 pm, to 2:30am this morning. I'm tired as hell, I hurt, and I have a midterm to make up, but it was worth every sore muscle and missed test.

Going into more detail would take up about 9 pages of text right now, and that's probably not a good idea.

I know a few of you are interrested in the Civil War, and even reenacting, if you ever get a chance to get to Cedar Creek in Middletown Va for the battle reenactment, it's worth it.

Will this reenactment be aired on the History Channel, if so, point out which one is you?

I doubt it'll be aired on the history channel. There were only a few small video production companies there, nothing serious though.

Metallica, it was in Middletown Va, only like 30 miles from the WV. Border, very small town.

Way back before I joined the Navy in 1979, I was a member of the Civil War Skirmishers Association (West coast version of the N-SSA). I was a member of the boarding party of the CSS Alabama. We were not re-enactors, we re-activated units that fought in the Civil War, wore the uniforms and fired the weapons. We shot live ammunition at static targets. Somethimes I miss the excitment of shooting all day, staying up til midnight, sitting around a bon fire drinking whatever was being passed around and then having a cannon being shot off at oh-dark thirty and then doing it all over again.

Glad you had fun Reb.

What unit are you with?

Zouave Rifles were .58 2 banders. My father's had one for years, a repro remington, and he's accurate as all hell with it, it's range is only slightly less than my 1853 enfield. They're fun to shoot.

Perhaps you're thinking of the 1842 springfield which were .69 caliber smoothbores.

When I was with the CSS Alabama, I shot a Springfield. Not bad, I bought it used from Worshall's (sp.) Sporting Goods in Seattle, WA. It was my first introduction to "front stuffers." When I joined the Navy, I sold it. I purchased a 2 band Enfield about 6 years ago (and sadly to say, I haven't shot it yet). I can't wait to smoke it up. I also own a Navy Arms copy of a Remington. That pistol is a blast.

What was really fun is that we shot: rifles, pistols, carbines, CANNONS AND MORTERS. If you think shooting a black powder rifle if fun, you should try being the rammer on a cannon crew.

I served on the crew for a full scale 12 pound napoleon one day. talk about awesome.

We've done just about every branch of service until we settled with our current unit, so we have two 3 banded enfields, the zouave rifle, an enfield musketoon (2 bands) a cook and brother carbine, a smith carbine, and a sharps carbine.

Countless pistols too....ever fire a Lematts pistol live? 9 44 caliber rounds in the cylinder, and the 20 ga. shotgun barrel underneath it. What a trip THAT is.
