After the Sox vs Yankees game last night (good job sox!!!) the Boston police shot "less leathal" roit control weapons at the roiting crowd. The "less leathal" weapons they were using were paintball guns shooting paintballs filled with peper spray powder. The powder is suppost to get into the respatory system and make the target fall to the ground coughing. A stray ball hit a young collage woman, who was not participating in the riot, in the eye. She died later that night.

Didn't anyone think of using grenades filled with pepper spray powder?  Seems like they would be just as effective in a crowd and no one would be getting shot in the eyes....

And anyways, I think the people rioting were more stupid than the cops....if they didn't get so mad over a baseball game, then there would be no need for the cops to shoot anything.

Try sayin that to the Canadians and the Europeans during and after a soccer game.

News reports are saying non-leathal round filled with a pepperspray like powder. If it was a bean bag round this makes these reports even worse for our sport...we're getting bad press for no reason.

The guns used by police for pepperball dispersment are used to selectively target troublmakers in a crowd to subdue them or widespread crowd riot control.  The idea with a pepperball compared to a grenade is the grenade just has the gase and covers a wide area.  Also, shifting winds can blow the gass back into the officers face.  If wind conditions are not favorable to the officers, gas grenades are not effective and actually disable the officers, not the crowd.  Pepperballs have a one two punch.  One is the gas.  The second, and we all can relate to this, is the kenetic impact.  Imagine walking down the street and getting nailed with a paintball when  you're not expecting it.  It will disorient you for a moment while you figure out what's going on...and you're someone who is familiar with it.  Also, obviously you don't have the wind issues that you do with gas grenades thus making the pepperballs more deployable in certain situations.

This is tragic and I know that the officers are trained to hit center mass...the torso area most times.  But targets don't always present themselves facing you standing upright.  (don't we wish)  Until you hear all the details...and I doubt we will...it was a tragic accident and the only people I blame currently are the morons who started it.

It was a pepperball. And you know what they use to fire 'em? Stock Tippman pro-carbines. Yup, tippys are now used in riot control.

In case you havent been paying attention all your life, being a police officer isn't the safest job in the world.

Just because an accident happens, you accuse the police? You badmouth them? What gives you the right to do that? It's a shame that this happened, yes, and I'm not condoning the killing of rioters, however, I think we need to remember that this WAS an accident.

I'm not sure who you directed that at, but I certainly hope it wasn't me.  Regardless the full facts of this case are not out and any conclusions to right or wrong doing at this point is nothing more than conjecture.  Just as this can be an accident an officer that has had previous reprimands on the use of LTL weaponry, including purposely taking head shots with Pepperball equipment (yes, they are Tippmann Carbines and a pistol that looks a lot like a Zeus...don't know which was used in this situation but I'd assume the Carbine), would lead me to question that perhaps it was poor judgment on the officer's part or incomplete training by the department.  Again, this is only speculation at this point and no clear definitive reasoning can be compiled by any of us at this point.

I have many friends that are law enforcement officers.  I even have one that has been involved in a fatality shooting and lost his job over it...not because he did anything wrong but because the public went nuts over the incident here in So. Cal.  But even they will tell you that there are brothers in blue that even they worry about.  A close friend of mine told me about a fellow cadet in his class that put a bullet through the gas tank of his car while getting his gear together for class.  Total accident, sure, but guess how many officers have done that...not a whole lot because most are more CAREFUL than that. Mind you, they guy still made it through the academy and is an officer today.

At the same time, it is important to note that officers are people like you and me.  And like all people they are not only capable of having an incedent or plan of action go awry resulting in an accident like this but that they can also suffer from a lapse of judgment under stressful conditions that will render the same outcome.  Just because they are trained to function, think, and perform far better than your average person under these circumstances doesn't mean they are unflappable.
