The other day this icon came up on my screen that said Windows had downloaded an upgrade called service Pack II. When I checked it out it said it held some critical stuff so I installed it regardless of the fact that each time I had installed one of their upgrades it made my computer slower. Well, when Windows made XP they decided to not put a firewall in it. This new Service pack II had a firewall. That firewall and my other firewall didn't like each other and kept conflcting and making my browser slow. So, angry at this stupid upgrade I went to System Restore to get rid of Service Pack II. When the computer restarted Windos crashed and I lost all my work including a 10 page short story in progress and tons of research papers. We had to wipe the hardrive and reinstall Windows.

Anyone else have similar issues?

SP2 works great for me, XP is now more stable and slightly faster. Of course I turned the dumb firewall off.

And another thing, you should never use system restore, because it breaks things instead of fixing them

I've never had a problem with the updates, either... Of course you don't use the built in firewall, though...

At least I don't have to configure my paperweight out the wazoo, or deal with it crashing.

I had Service Pack 2 installed and it actually works really good and when you go to websites that install spyware without you knowing, it prompts and asks if you want to install and then the name of whatever it is. Thus my PC has been saved from spyware many a time from it.

I think I'm one of the forums only strictly Linux users left. I know patrick and tom (Hairball) used to use linux. And a few of the people on IRC have tried it and can manage getting around in it.

As far as working better than Windows, that all depends on your definition of "Better". Stability wise, Linux is about as stable as they come. Alot of web servers run Linux for the fact that they can stay up for hundreds of days at a time. As far as funtionality, anything you can do in Windows for the most part can be done on Linux. Exept for games. As with Mac, games aren't ported to Linux as much as they are made for Windows.

The only difference is you actually have to do stuff to get it up and running. Compile software from source rather than just opening a .exe.

IMO, learning is part of the fun, as well as the aggrivation of Linux. I am a proud user of Slackware Linux 10.0.

If you choose to install Linux, don't PM me for help. I've been there and done that with too many people. There is plenty of documentation on it to get you on your feet. K. Thx. Bye.

Okay, so I've come to the conclusion that System Restore was part of the problem. Mental note: never use that again.

HAHA you're so funny. It's not that I didn't use windows right it's that I listened to Windows and did what it said supposidly works.

um. Sp2 sucks. Windows is now more involved and "Caring" about your pc's spyware and update and stuff, as if they're going to release another service pack anytime soon.. just turn the firewall on, and the icon in startup will stop popping up all the time. it doesn't do much anyway, its made by windows..

Yeah, I done that service pact thing along time ago.  I deactivated windows firewall cause mine is better.  And alot of those updates are very helpful contrary to the windows haters on the forum.

i installed SP2 on multiple machines without a hitch... only problem i had was norton corporate didn't play well with the "antivirus monitor"... the firewall asks you to permit applications to go out... which is kind of interesting... since i've seen several applications during install try and go out to their companies sites... windvd is one of them... other than that... it fixes some wireless issues with WPA which is what i use... so that was alright...

i have a dedicated linux machine that i use for apache, mySQL, and any programming for school... my PC runs XP but its a strictly gaming machine... and my laptop runs debian/xp, although debian hasn't been getting much use since i just SSH into my linux box if i need to use linux for anything (compiling, etc)...

yea but with SP2 the firewall is on by default... in the past the firewall had to be physically enabled... due to the increase in network centric virus activity (worms/trojans) microsoft figured rather than fixing known vulnerabilities they would just have the firewall in place to prevent the viruses from getting out onto the network...

This is coming from someone who uses 2k because XP wont run on his ancient box. Also I doubt you have used XP with SP2 installed for any length of time, so be quiet.

Also, if you wanted to rid yourself of SP2 you could always just uninstall it. I would advise against ever using system restore at all, I turn it off on every box I used because it breaks stuff worse and eats up space on your drive, filling it with crap.

SP2 blew the crap outta my system.. so I just turned off all the security and got Norton 2005.

And I've got Linux on my machine, almost never use it though because I have Red Hat 9, which everyone said to get, and then a few weeks later all of a sudden it's "Oh, Red Hat sucks".

And now someone will respond telling me I'm an idiot for saying RH9 sucks. Too bad.

Currently looking for a Linux distro that does all the stuff I want (NTFS support, uses windows/menus and terminal commands, and will let me learn it fairly easily and then let me switch to a more technical setup (terminal vs Windows-style).

But yeah, SP2 is a waste of time. If you already had a security program, shoulda just kept it. In typical Microsoft fashion, it was nothing like what they claimed it would be.

I have SP2. had it for a good couple months...

But I never saw the firewall ever notify me of it blocking anything, except for programs I was trying to launch... This made me skeptical of its effectiveness..

So,

I'm running ZoneAlarm Software Firewall, and AVG anti-virus...Along side SpywareBlaster, SpyBot S&D, Adaware, and Windows washer..

All of which is free, with the exception of Windows Washer...

The ZoneAlarm FireWall is pretty beefy, and seems to be very nice, and AVG anti-virus has been working great...

Oh and FireFox, just so I dont get much spyware to begin with.

I dont have a single problem with windows at all. I downloaded SP2 the first day it came out, turned all notifications and firewall off and i dont get bothered at all. It runs faster and is more reliable.

Most of the problems you people are complaining about is probably on overdose of spyware in your comp, cause i have none and dont get these errors you guys complain about.

With the amazing amount of antispyware software out there i doubt that is the case. Anyone with AOL can scan for spyware anytime and there are countless other free things on the net.
