on halloween me and my friends played airsoft during the day because we had nothing better to do..so as we were walking home we had to walk along the railroad tracks..it was the only way to go...so were going along and a train comes up and noone heres it...it is about 15 feet away and my friend looks back and yells train and we run...i have never run so fast in my life...if he never looked back all of us would surely have been killed...i feel lucky

How do you not hear a train coming up from behind you at 15 feet away?

Sounds like a bit of an exaggeration to me, for several reasons:

1) Trains are loud, even without the horn.
2) Trains usually sound their horns often.
3) If it was truly 15 feet away, that wouldn't have been enough time for your friend to say something, you to comprehend it, and then move.

maybe like 100ish and i MIGHT believe you? By the way i assume this is at night and trains have BIG frickin lights on them. I think it just was a vivid dream from all that candy.

If the train was moving at 20 miles per hour, you would have had approximately .5 seconds to get out of the way before the train hit you.

I'm not saying it couldn't have been close, but 15 feet is basically nothing. If it was something like 60 feet, there might be some chance you'd get away (if the train was going at 20mph, that'd give you about 2 seconds).

no it was during the day not night...ok i might have been off on the distance by a little but it was surprising and i remember it being close

Either that train was moving at about 1mph, or you just suck at judging distances.

it was going about 15....ok yeah im going to get an exact measurement when im running out of the way of a train

Posted By: Bunkered
Date Posted: 01 November 2004 at 3:37pm
Well, we're not asking for an exact measurement...
We're just pointing out that 15 feet (or even "at the most 30 feet") is pretty much impossible.

Why not just walk to the side and not run along the tracks?

because we couldn't...there was a steep slope on both sides and you'd fall into thorns and stagnant water

if there was some ambient noise and the train was slowing down (coasting) it can be hard to hear a train.

Trains can be very quiet when coasting.

1. Trains rumble
2. Trains vibrate the ground
3. Trains make all sorts of engine noise, air hose noise, etc.
4. Couldn't you have just.. run sideways?

I'm a train person (I love just about all that is railroading), and this sounds like complete made-up hype.. that or they were on something.

Being involved in EMS and from experience I can say it is possible to not be aware of a train coming up on you. One call I went to a kid crashed his dirt bike into a tree and landed next to the track. When we got down to the kid who was very messed up we started working on him. It was a hot summer day with a breeze along the rail bed. There was no engines running or sirens near where we were because of the location. A little bit after working on the victim for a while the police officer assigned to the call walked up and yelled to us that a train was coming. The train was about 100 feet away and approaching from downwind. We never heard it or felt it coming. We were about 5 feet from the tracks. We were told later by the railroad the train was traveling 25 MPH on the section of track we were working next to. You could feel a kind of suction as the train went by and from either the suction generated by the train or the wind of it going by us at 25 MPH blew most of our soft supplies around. So it is possible to not realize a train is coming however I am pretty sure it is due to inattention.  As far as 98gods’ original post goes if his distances and speeds were right he should be dead.
