Science Research Project Proposal

All motor sport enthusiasts realize the difference a highly tuned engine can make compared with an un-tuned one. However, the problem was in order to tune the engine, one had to either use crude methods of obtaining the data; such as a stopwatch and other devices. If they wanted more accurate and detailed data, they would either have to own an expensive dynamometer of rent time for one. Although this was more sophisticated, it was also unpractical.
While we obtained an old disk break type dynamometer, we quickly leaned that it would not work properly due to a leak in the hydraulic fluid line and/or the master cylinder. Back at square one, we had an idea to record the sound of the motor and bring it back in through the computer and scan it in and analyze it. After doing a research on the Internet, we found out the rpm is directly correlated to the engines sound. We plan to take this idea a step further by using two Motorola FRS radios as a wireless data collector. With a range of 2miles it will give us ample room for mobility. However to get a more precise measurement, we must first construct a small coil around the spark plug to hear the static clicks produced by the sparkplug. This would then be plugged into the slightly modified radio and transmitted back to the main computer.
Because there are sever factors that would reduce the validity of this experiment, such as; wind resistance, hills, and weight of the rider. In order to void these factors, we plan to take the bike and tow it along a pre-designated route. Then we will enter that data and enter it into the computer and minus those factors from the actual run, which is the same concept as taking out the weight of a cup on a scale.

So, you're wanting to tune a motorcycle based on the sound you hear? Well, keep in mind a dyne keeps track of the rpm's from the car's computer. You'll have to moniter the rpm's and the sound. PLUS, a dyne stays in one spot. So why the crap are you draging it through the woods??? Just stick it in your garage, rig a camcorder to watch the rpm guage, and start the camcorer and sound recorder at the same time. Then, bring the data into the computer. Use MovieMaker II to combine the sound and video, and moniter the clicks to the rpm's. Don't drag it through the woods- that will REALLY screw it up. Plus, this goes in Thoughts And Opinions forum.
