Alright, the current owner of the Matrix brand name is Dye. Dye
makes 4 different kinds of Matrix's- The Matrix LCD ($825), the
Proto Matrix ($950), the DM4 ($1175), or the DM5 ($1350). They
are, in my opinion, the best guns on the market at this time. With
the exception of the Matrix LCD, they are all EXTREMELY light (and
even the LCD isn't that heavy). The spool valve design, combined
with the low pressure operation, creates the fastest, most accurate
marker on the market. None of the markers have any noticable
amount of kick if set up properly, and all come standard with ACE
(anti-chop eyes). The Matrix line is extremely customizable, with
everything from barrels to software available for upgrading. Out-of-
the-box or tweaked out, Matrix's are a dream to shoot and play with.

Dude, I answered all your questions. And I love how everyone's
"friend" owns one. As for upgrades, a Tadao or Musashi board is a
great software upgrade. I prefer to use Ultralight barrels, so a UL kit
is always a plus. If you buy an LCD, I say get a new feedneck. Other
than that, you're all set.

I hated the Dm5 the trigger sucked IMO I liked the proto the best small
lite and fast and has a bit better efficency over the other matrixs.

i have a matrix. they are the best. I love them. Never have problems. Don't worry about efficiancy, its good enough, and you can always get a new bolt kit. No upgrades really needed for them.

Never shot one, but I hear that they're a lot like Shockers- light and fast, but with horrible efficiency. Good guns for front players, but for the price you could get a Matrix LCD or a lower end Timmy (is that an oxy-moron?) A Matrix would be my first choice in your position, but If they just aren't your thing, get a LaSoya or ECX Timmy.
