Welcome to the forum. Hopefully this thread won't get locked because of the thread title.

Silencers are illegal. Besides they really don't work on paintball markers because the object of a silencer is to quiet supersonic gasses and projectiles (bullets). Since a paintball is going less than 300 fps, it is already subsonic and therefore unnecessary.

A lot of people think they can use silencers on paintball markers and they are wrong. Silencers are on a federal list that requires a license no matter what it is used for.

Again, welcome to the forum.

As stated above silencers are illegal. The closest thing you will come to is a fake suppressor for mil-sim guns that do not silence the gun but do make it look pretty.

Welcome to the forums.

Silencers aren't illegal, atleast from my memeory of the long debate.  The one guy owned everyone with the actual legal document saying that you need a class 3 license or whatever only if it uses an explosion propellent.  Somthing along those lines.

OMG, here we go again.

The legal limit of noise suppression is 3db.  This means that you can reduce the noise of firing by half and still be legal.  A paintball gun does not meet the definition of being a firearm and so the Class III licencing does not apply.  However the law is interpreted by each county in the United States differently.  If you are worried about it being legal in your area, contact your local sheriff.  If you don't ask you will never know.

Posted By: S\/\/4T-L()G4N
Date Posted: 24 November 2004 at 5:24pm
Nope, its federal. It has nothing to do with it being a paintball gun. The problem comes in because the silencer MAY have silencing capabilities on a real firearm. Hence the Class III firearms crap.

And if it was legal to do, why did the guy that got one the legal guy not get laughed right out of the building.

they're not technically illegal...you need a license for them. Even if you're only using it on your paintball gun, it's possible for the silencer to be mounted on a real gun. That's why you need a license.

just give up on the idea, it's not worth the trouble.

Get a 2 liter plastic bottle, stuff it with TP, and put it over the end of your barrel and shoot your marker. Then ask the question to yourself again, "Where is most of the noise coming from?"

This is copied directly from the FAQ from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms website at http://www.aft.gov - www.aft.gov

The link for the faq itself is http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#a9 - http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#a9

A9) Q. Are Paintball and/or Airgun Sound Suppressers legal? [ javascript history.back1 - Back ]

A. §921(a)(24) The terms "firearm silencer" and "firearm muffler" mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.

Numerous paintball silencers tested by the Firearms Technology Branch have been determined to be (emphasis added by me), by nature of their design and function, firearm silencers as defined in 18 U.S.C., Section 921(a)(24). An individual wishing to manufacturer a firearm silencer must receive prior approval from ATF by submitting an ATF Form 1 and paying a $200 making tax.

If I have any further questions as to this classification, who should I contact?

Please send a written request to our Firearms Technology Branch at the following address:

Bureau of ATF
Firearms Technology Branch
650 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Room 6450
Washington, DC 20226

So, unless you get a license (not a class 3 license, that's for machine guns), for $200 and renew it every year, posessing a silencer for paintball "markers" is still illegal.

And silencers do not work for supersonic.

Originally posted by Halo Halo wrote:

Not trying to piss anyone off, but I have done a decent bit of research on Suppressors, so here you go. I will try to clear up some mis-conceptions about Suppressor technology:

Can you silence the report of a paintball marker? Yes you can. .The sound coming out of the barrel, can be suppressed by the addition of a silencer/suppresor. Gasses expanding is what causes your sound. This can be suppressed, through traditonal silencer technology. In the other silencer post someone said something about the round traveling sub sonic, and that you get no bennifit from a silencer, because of that fact. Well that is not the case. A suppressor works best when used with sub sonic rounds. If you dont use sub sonic, you get a loud crack from the projectile breaking the sound barrier, but the report from the weapon actually firing, is muffled/suppressed by the suppresor. Paintballs are fired below the sound barrier, so there is no loud crack.

A suppressor is nothing more than a muffler like on your car, just a different style. They are not complex devices, and the designs used today, are the same basic designs used since the 1930's.

Now to the point:
As several people have pointed out, you are still getting noise coming from your marker. You are still gonna get the clanking of the action cycling. And that is fairly noisy, especially on the Tippmanns. And yes, they are illegal, if they can be used on a firearm. If they can not be used on a regular fire arm, they are legal. But it cost money to get the ATF to look at it, and decide if it is a legal design. Other local laws may consider them illegal, especially out in Cali.

The final conclusion:
Yes you can suppress a paintball marker. Will it do any good? Some, but you need to do something about the noise the marker it's self makes (action cycling). Is it legal? Maybe. Depends on the design. It is worth the hassel? That is up to you. Decent bit of work, and may cost a bit if you want to get it okayed through th ATF.

If you decide to make a suppresor for your marker, my suggestion is to use the Whisper barrel, or maybe the Armson stealth (has good porting). Use a comp air system. It will greatly reduce noise on its own with out using a suppressor. And do some modification to quiet the action of the marker.

I hope this helps some of you, and I hope it doesnt make the rest of you too mad, because that is not my intention.

you might as well forget a silencer you can make them ,but it doesnt help on a paintball gun due to subsonic speeds .  However there are barrels made for silencing your gun such as the 32 degrees quiet riot or whisper thats what i would recomend i own both. theyre great.

Unicorn,
Thank you for refreshing my memory. They can be made legal after the form and 200 dollar making tax. It has been a few years since I have studied up on paintball marker supressors. I knew you had to get it certified, and pay so much. Forgot that it effectivly still considers it a firearm silencer. So, I guess I stand corrected.

{Here is a excerpt from a letter sent from the BATF to Bill Mills.}

Since we have preliminarily determines that the subject device would meet the definition of a firearm silencer, you would, prior to making the device, have to submit ATF Form 1, Application to Make and Register a firearm,
to the National Firearms Act Branch, pay a $200 making tax and recieve approval of the application. The NFA Branch can be reached at:

Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms
     National Firearms Act Branch
650 Massachusetts Avenue, NW., Room 5300
     Washington, DC 20226
     (202) 927-8330

After such approval, the device can be submitted to the Firearms Technology Branch for a formal classification. After examination the device will be returned to you. In the event that the device is determined not to be a firearm silencer, you will be refunded the $200.

That was from Edward M. Owen, Jr. Chief, Firearms Technology Branch. And that was back in 1995.

http://www.corin.com/bill/paintball/silencer.html
This is the page with all of Bill's confirance with the BATF. If I could have remembered the site earlier, it could have refreshed my memory and answered alot of questions.

"And silencers do not work for supersonic."

True, but.......
In this application a supressor on a gun using supersonic ammunition does two thing. 1) Even though sound is created by the round traveling faster than the speed of sound, the sound from the round firing (the explosion of the powder in the cartridge) is effectivly suppresed depending on quality of said supressor. It makes it a whole lot harder to pin point you position. 2)It also supresses the flash of the muzzle blast. Which again makes it difficult to pin point your location.

For a little demonstration of this, get out your .22 rifle. Buy your standard .22 rounds, and then a box of sub sonic ammo. Fire the first, and then the other. You will hear a distinctive difference. One has the pop of the round detonating, but not the crack the bullet makes as it breaks the sound barrier.

A supressor on a firearm using supersonic rounds is not silent, but the sound is reduced. That is why I prefer the term supressor instead of silence.

You guys may want to put a link to Bill's page on silencers and sticky that. As Evil said it would cut down on these threads. And he gets fairly in detail on design, and then his two letters to and from the BATF.

And Evil, they arent pathetic. People just want to know about them. Remember, there is no bad questions.

Gah! To silence a paintball gun is different from silencing a firearm.

Under Unicron's post, it says NUMEROUS paintball silencers work on actual firearms, not ALL. This is a common problem caused by people like those posting thinking that's the only way to silence anything. Your paintball gun works differently than a real gun. No, it's not the bolt clanking that produces the sound. Leave air off the gun, cock it, and pull the trigger. Did it go BOOM? NO. It made a soft and very quiet thud. No, the bolt doesn't fly back during blow back and smack the end cap either. Huh, wonder where the noise comes from?

There is a guy at the field I play at with an Excalibur. He claims it operates off of only 45 psi. Whatever the case, it is just about silent. You don't hear him shooting at you until the balls are breaking around/ on you. I wonder why it's silent? He didn't make a silencer and put it on on his paintball gun.

I'll tell everyone AGAIN. Your gun uses 800 psi. The surrounding air is 1 ATM, or about 14 psi. When 800 psi meets 14 psi out of a .68 inch hole, what happens? BOOM. What does this mean?

Well, you could ultra compress as much cotton, tissue paper, high tech sound reducing foam as you want in a silencer attachment. The problem is, it won't help much. The only reason these silencers appear to work is because they allow the air more room to expand and drop in pressure. Key word here, DROP IN PRESSURE. So, it'd be much better to NOT stuff it with sound-deadening materials, since that just makes it illegal (or need a license, not illegal, whatever).

What can you do to silence your gun? Buy a barrel with lots of porting, polish the internals, put in a stronger drive spring (Maddman RED spring kit), and get the Comp-air kit to DROP THE PRESSURE.

Is anyone getting this yet?

Anyone interested in quieter barrels should check out the End Game Compression Barrel.

http://www.endgameinc.com/ - http://www.endgameinc.com/

I have one on one of my 98Cs and here's what I think of it:

It does not sound any quieter when firing the marker.  It sounds "different" (sort of a hollow metallic sound that reminds me of a M203), but not quieter.  The folks I play with swear it is significantly quieter.  I got one elimination because an opponent directly on the other side of my cover did not hear me firing at his team and did not know I was there until he exposed himself to fire.

It is hard on paint.  If the weather isn't perfect, I swap in a 12" J&J.

The inside is amazingly rough.  It reminds me of a flatline.  I don't know if it's intentional and helps quiet the shots, if it's a poor quality finish, or if it's supposed to be some type of rifling.  Despite this, the barrel is surprisingly accurate.  (I picked it up used from a young man who claimed it was not accurate.  I was curious so I made him an offer and he accepted.)  I'm not that fond of the length, but they make shorter ones.

Mack- that barrel would make a great "silencer"~ish thing. I'm guessing the portion of the barrel where the silencer looking thing sits is cut with large open holes. The key to this barrel is not only the larger area for the air to expand, but the fluted porting facing back. This makes the bulk of the sound escaping the fluting come back at the gun operator, not the target. That barrel plus the LPK, polishing, and strong drive spring would make a very quiet Tippmann.

Reading my last post I realized I wasn't completely clear (go figure).  What I meant to say was it doesn't sound quieter to me when I'm using it.

Lord Jovian:  You are correct.  The "silencer" screws on and off.  The barrel under it, and the "silencer" both have large teardrop ports.  Additionally the silencer came with some kind of foam insert.

I've never tried it without the insert, that will make for an interesting experiment when paintball season starts up again.

Edited Addition:  Oh and you were right about the porting too.  I never noticed before, but it does face back toward the rear of the marker.

I guess paintballing could be year round here in Montana too, if I could play on real short notice any time of the week.  To give an example of what I mean:  It was -28 (-45 w/wind chill) last week and blizzard conditions.  It was still in the negatives at the beginning of this week.  It started warming up Wednesday and had reached 60 degrees and melted all the snow by yesterday.  Today it is 25 degrees and snowing again.  (Yes, if you're wondering, this is typical for a winter up here.)

I have an EndGame Compression (14") barrel for my A5. It is fairly quiet and accurate, not to mention it looks bad @$$. The interior is a little "rough" because it is considered another layer of "rifling" in addition to the spiral porting. I agree it does also seem picky on paint. I had best results with Chronic so far. With that said, they are over priced though, probably due to their limited production. If you want one of these, see if you can pick one up second hand, or try one first to see if it is worth it to you.

Most importantly, you don't need one on a paintball gun. The only real reason I can see is if you wanted to make a scenario gun.
