I am currently looking to buy an automag. Now a buddy of min, who i consider a paintball guru has told me that the only source that an automag will run effectively on is compressed air. I come to you people to ask if this is right or wrong. Mag owners help me out!

its highly recomended that you use hpa, especialy with the x-valve. it even says really big on the gun "do not use co2". you can use co2, but it is strongly suggested that you have an anti-siphon tube at the very least. theres great deals on some 68 classics on ebay. just type in automag in the search window, and theres some under $100. theres also great deals on small HPA tanks for under $50. i just bidded on one which will end soon and put an end to my co2 woes.

Right on. The AutoMag was designed FOR compressed air long before it was easily available. Tom Kaye knew the best propellant for the gun would be air, but had to also set it up to be capable of running CO2.

Long and short: if you run CO2, antisiphon, regulate, and run only in warm weather. Getting liquid into your valve system WILL produce dangerous velocity spikes. Mine spiked to 450+ once. It was darn scary.

If you have an x-valve, level 10, etc...get N2...classic mags will work fine on c02 though.

x-valves can ONLY run on compressed air.  even if you have an anti-syphon tube and a regulator... the x-valve will recharge too fast and suck liquid into the gun.

classic valves on the other hand are capable of running co2... of course they will run better with an anti-syphon tube as well.
