Hey fellas, this is my first post and problably not my last.

I just went painballing the other day for the first time in ten years (I was real young)and man do I wanna get back into it! I don't think I'll be a full time painballer because it's an expensive sport but I wanna get a gun and some gear so when I can play I don't have to rent ya know?!

Looking for someone that's not a saleman for advice, I personaly want a marker that has (forgive my rookie talk) a comfortable place to hold the barrel while aiming, kinda like the tipman pro/carbine. At least right now I don't want to hold the marker like a tommy gun. I'm interested in Tippmann because of it's rep for a long lasting low maintnence gun but not sold yet. I'm looking at the custom 98, it doesn't have the grip on the barrel like I mentioned earlier but from what I can tell on my own it's a study marker and if I get serious with the sport I can upgrade it until I'm broke. Is there a barrel I can buy that would put the grip I'm looking for on the barrel? Does anyone think I'm on the right track? I plan on playing in a couple different places so speedball and woodsball would be in the picture.

Anyway those are my basic questions, if any of you experienced guys can throw some open minded opinions my way I'd be very thankful.

Rock on!

Get th 98c, then buy a flatline barrel, looks like a rifle barrel and gains 100 fett of extra distance to your shot. If you do buy it then I would recamend a stock also.

Well your best bet is the pro carbine if you want it to be comfortable when you hold the barrel. Unless you plan on spending a few bucks and getting a 98c then a Flatline or even the A-5 with a Flatline...

Thanks for repying.

So (in your opinion), when people critique the flatline as not being effective up close, are these people just being picky or is having a gun and barrell that big really going to handicap a player in close encounters.

Thanks again

The Flatline does not make the shot more powerful. Its strictly for more range and accuracy. Now people will say its false but those are people that are either jealous cause they dont have one or they're somone that got pwned by someone with a Flatline. The Flatline is a very good barrel.

Thanks for the welcome Dan. Have you used the pro carbine yourself? That was the gun I rented the other day, it physically felt great, but it was so beat up it was hard to get a first impression off of it. I would take a shot at the range and after 20 feet (or less) and it would hook left or right dramatically, I was shocked how bad the accuracy was. At the same time alot of the parts were loose, rusted and abused so I dont want to disregard it if a new pro carbine shoots true. Do you (or anyone else) have experience with the pro carbine? I never see them in mags or featured anywhere. Is there any specific reason not to get this gun?

Well its not the newest gun on the market thats why you dont see it in Mag's. You have to remember it was a rental gun you used. Everything was stock on it EX: barrel. If you got a better barrel for it you would notice the difference on the curve of the paintball.

the flatline is not a good barrel for up close because the bal is still increasing in hight so the ball tends to go over your target if it less than 40ft

In your opinion (anybody reading this), should I just get over the whole "I wanna hold a gun by the barrel" phase, it's what i wanna do but i'm looking in the mags and sites and it seems nobody does it. Do you guys not hold the gun by the barrel because of good technique or lack of options?

For a first day back on the field in a decade I didnt feel like a newbe, I did pretty well even with a gun that was only effective up close. I wanna play speedball and woodsball, What gun would you recomend, Tippmann or not, Holding the gun by the barrel or not.

Thanks again for all the replies!

You could get the procarbine if you want the the grip under the barrel. Keep in mind that it can not be upgraded with out a little bit of work and knowlage with your hands. The 98c is just as sturdy and can be upgraded very easily. If you get the flatline barrel for the 98c you can use the shroud that hold the barrel as a grip.

The 98 custom with the flatline seems to be a highlight in the paintball world. Does anyone here actually own one? If so what's your opinion on close encounters, I know that when shooting close the ball will supoedly go up, but is this i reason not to get it or is it something you get use to or is it a total flaw? Thanks.

Well if it means anything i used to own a tippmann 98c with flatline and RT trigger among many other goodies and sold it to keep my then STOCK ProCarbine.  And after investing a little money into the Procarbine it performes Quiet a bit better than my 98c EVER DID.  I have maybe half the $$ into my carbine that i had in my 98c too boot.  BUt it performes better FOR ME not nessisarily BETTER overall.

I kept the carboine cuase i liked how it felt for one.  I also liked how EASY it was to dissasemble and maintaine compared to the 98c.  And as it sits right now it is more all round game friendly than my 98c ever was.   It is smaller, lighter, has a lower profile, and  a noticeable improvement  in accuracy over the flatline  on my 98c.

But this is all my personal preferance as some fiund the 98c to better suit them.  My suggestion is to try both new and see what you like better.

Good luck and have fun.

P.S.  A pro carbine is a tunoment capable gun as is any gun when placed in the hands of a capable tunoment player.

Tip (and I'm not trying to make fun of you): Check the ppls signatures.  They usually have their gun upgrades on there.  His barrel's a J&J Ceramic 14"; a very good barrel for most tippys.  You could get a Lapco Bigshot, both barrels work well.

As for the Flatline, I have never fired one nor do I own one, but from everything I've read, the Flatline seems pretty cool if you can eventually learn to manipulate it.  Heard somewhere that a guy would turn his tippy onto it's side and fire with the Flatline.  At a certain distance the ball would curve in the direction he wanted and he could sometimes get players that way who were hiding behind bunkers.

I recommend any Tippmann.  Carbine will be harder to find upgrades as mentioned before, so I'd probably stick with the 98c since you're somewhat thinking of tricking it out.  You could probably find a rail shroud on a mil-sim site (military simulation) that'll allow you to have a grip on the barrel rather than on the "Tommy Gun" position, so research that option before you get too fixed onto the Carbine.  I know for a fact that they have M-16 barrel shrouds for the A-5 that look sturdy enough.

P.S. Welcome to the forums fellow newbie!

I own a tippmann 98c with a flatline, and the reason i find that it is bad for close range fighting is that because of the curve on the barrel, the ball takes a little bit longer to leave the barrel, which causes the other person to have more time to move/ fireback.   Besides that little flaw, its a great woodsball marker.

i have been playing for a while and i have the 98 custom, and the A-5. now i dont have the flat line on the 98 but i do on the A-5. I like to play woods ball, and speed. and personally i think the flat line is good for both. u can see a little bit of an ark up but its not real bad. so i would get it if i were u. but the  procarbine is cheaper only because u have to buy the flat line with the 98. its up to i would use both guns first and fiddle around with them and then see what u like.

Hey,  I know it may seem wierd now but the "tommy gun" gripping style will grow on you and you wont be able to go back.  But luckily the procarbine provides the rifle grip you want.  Barrels are an important upgrade but the J&J and Bigshot are both good.  I personally hacked my rifle grip off a little bit ago but thats beside the point.   The procarbine is a great marker for people who like to keep it simple.  But the  best part is the upgrades that are not just lego drop ins and might require some know how that make you feel like you have your own individual gun.

I might not have a famous rep for P.Cs but I have a pretty large know what along with B.C and Enos Shenk(both know more than me but thats ok)  P.M me if you have any questions.

You can "Broom Handle" about any barrel out there , you want a foregrip thats like the Carbine, or SL68's feel . I honestly dont recall where I held my 98C , Oh , Doh !! The foregrip , lol ,its just mostly getting used to something , but if your preference is strong, then get a Pro-Carb ,or a 98c and make a nice foregrip for it . Enos should be able to steer you in the right direction , if you want info on Uber Carbine stuff .

What general price range??? Whats your options for air etc? The pro carbine is still around. If you are looking to mix it up in both woods & speedball personally I'D look at a new ule mag if N2 or compressed air is handy ( wont run on co2). If not an A5 is a great gun ( really), little tricky on coming out the right side of bunkers in speedball. The new trilogy autocockers only have one that appears to be worth it the pro. The 04 vert autocker is a good all around gun , but does take a little more care than other guns.

I think the A-5 or the 98c would be perfect for you but dont upgrade yet! Play a few games in boath woodsball and speedball then based on what you like you can upgrade from there. tippmanns are realy player markers i say that becouse they reflect the player that owns them. Take My A-5 for example Flatline, ^6 position car stock, sling, remote, Red dot sight. now what about that dosent scream woodsball. but take the same A-5 and put a J&J a good sized drop and a top feed and bamn its a speed ballers dream. you see what i mean?

As for the grabing the barrel thing you should look in to a M-16 barrel kit got to Ospgear.com and just look arround they have all the stuff you could ever want.

Good luck in you future games and welcom to the forum

I have a 98c but have never used the flatline system. But i have played against them and they seemed to perform just the same at close range( except they hurt a lot more) as they did at long range. The only bad thing that i have heard about them is that tale a lot longer to clean. But the grip thing, you will adjust if you get the 98c. I used to have a Game Face bone daddy( no one ever get one they mess up way too fast) and i had to hold it like a rifle, but i had no problem adjusting. Ohh and if you are not wanting to put a lot of money into paintball, don't play speedball, it wastes so much paint its not even funny, where as in woods ball you can hide and have a lot more cover so rely on that insteaad of wasting paint to provide cover.

I have heard the A-5 is one of the best woodsball guns out there, but i've also heard that it isn't so great for speedball because the front of the hopper is flat and it really sticks out far if you are right handed. i don't have the gun yet but i am looking in to getting one. depending on how much money you are willing to spend cockers are great for speedball but i've only test fired one. but i don't know about in the woods. they can run pretty expensive though so it's basically all about what you are willing to spend. what ever you do though don't get a crappy gun from wal mart just cause you see that it's really cheap. trust me i speak from experience. however they do sell a 98 custom pack for only 170. ( gun, mask, hopper, co2).

well i hope this was helpful and have fun when you go out to play.

So I'm not an expert, only been playing 9 monmths. But I have a 98 custom with flatline. I think its great. The shroud allows me to hold like a rifle which is more comfortable for me when I'm in place to do a little sniping. The virticle grip is grate when I'm doing closer quarters. But if your planning on playing speedball, I just can't see the flatline as being good for it, granite, I've never played speedball. But don't forget, their are other options. A friend of mine has the A5, with an M4 stock. It seems to work just fine and still give you the ability to hold under the barrel, without the extra length of the flatline. If your interested, check out http://www.rustyspaintballgear.com/ - http://www.rustyspaintballgear.com/  thats where my friend first found his. Theirs lots of possibilities out their so don't get stuck on flatline or carbine.
