A SOLDIER died after accidentally shooting himself in the GROIN while cleaning his rifle, a coroner heard yesterday.

Andrew Kelly, 18, died three days after getting his dream posting with the Parachute Regiment in Basra, Southern Iraq.

He was cleaning his loaded SA80 rifle with the safety catch left off.

Andrew, of Lydford, Devon, suffered a brain haemorrhage, which Oxfordshire coroner Nicholas Gardiner said may have resulted from the gunshot — or possibly caused his finger to slip in the first place.

Andrew’s mother Helen Yallop said: “He died having achieved his dream.”

Why would you clean a loaded gun period?  What happened, happened because he was careless, no excuses about it.

No No NO...its not about the gun cleaning, loaded or not,

you guys missed the whole point of the story....

Let me show you the way.

[Andrew’s mother Helen Yallop said: “He died having achieved his dream.” ]

She is a complete idiot!  Unless his dream was to shoot his "package"  off ,  then die 3 days later.

What could be worse,  i mean,  if you shoot off  "Mr. Willy" and the boys , wouldn't you just want to die right there?

NOooooo!  his dream was to live for 3 solid days, knowing he had Murdered Mr Willy & Co. ??

geeesh...this is pretty messed up...

Scary part is that "stupid" loaded weapons accidents in the military happen all the time, but now that there's a War going on its "news worthy". Was it Canada or UK?

If you head fits inside a pickle jar, you shouldn't be allowed to shoot at anything...period.

What an idiot. I've been cleaning firearms since I was 8 and I've never A)cleaned one while leaving it loaded or B)shot myself. Idiots suck.

How do you point a gun that is being cleaned at your groin, unless he was holding the butt between his feet....makes no sence.

I am not dumb enough to clean a gun with its safty off, let alone LOADED!  What an idiot.

Just food for thought.

There have been terrible problems with the safeties on the SA80s particularly in desert powder.

so? he had bullets in the gun a very dumb move, do you take apart your marker with it gased and with balls in the chamber and hopper?

Obviously not.

Have you ever wiped paint off you hopper or air tank coming off the field? Is that considered cleaning your marker?

Well your reading things into the story and making assumptions. The story didn't say anything about taking the SA80 apart, it said cleaning. In a powery desert that could mean a lot of things.

Now, guns should always be pointed in a safe direction and so forth. What I am saying is there simply is not enough info, I doubt we are getting the full story on this one.

yep, im assuming because there are a lot of dirt partles and sand that would get lodged in it, that he was stripping it down

Now I realize there is always one idiot, but this story seems embellished to me.

lol, yeah I figured...

Anyhoo, the whole thing just seems out of place.

Then check this part out.

Andrew, of Lydford, Devon, suffered a brain haemorrhage, which Oxfordshire coroner Nicholas Gardiner said may have resulted from the gunshot — or possibly caused his finger to slip in the first place.

So was it carelessness? or a brain hemorrhage?
I mean the story says this may have caused his finger to slip? So he was cleaning a loaded gun with his finger on the trigger, while pointing it at his nuts??
