Well, I'm looking into getting a guitar just for something to do and a new challenge of sorts.  I'm not going to be playing it in a band or professionally or anything, so I'm not looking for something ungodly expensive or anything.  My price range (including amp) is no more than $300/$400.  Yes I want an electric guitar because I do.  If this price range is to low, tell me so that I can get a job or something to get the extera money...

Most new people when they start out want an electric guitar.

I've found that most people who start with an electric guitar never really turn out to be that good, as they are doing it mostly just to be popular or cool. (Im not saying this about everyone, but most.)

Start out with an acoustic.  You don't need an amp or anything.

I started an acoustic, picked up 2 more higher end acoustics (epiphone and a Takamine) and then got 2 electrics(one me and my dad built, and a Fender American Standard).

Its not just if you wanna be "popular or cool," most people do it becuase of the way it sounds. What if people want distortion? What if people want effects? You cant get that from an acoustic. Im not saying what you put is wrong, im just saying its preference.

Most people don't even need distortion or effects until at least 6 months after they've started.  Most even longer than that, and thats if your good.  More than half the people that pick it up don't even stick with it.

When you start out with acoustic, you can get down the basics and move up to the electric if you stick with it.

I completely agree with you 100%. Most people should accualy start with an acoustic becuase what you said, you can get the basics, and so on.  To me electric is more fun than acoustic. Don't get me wrong, i still play on my acoustic from time to time, but i perfer to play "distorted" i just like the sound. And from the bands that i like, it shows it.

And I bet your decent, people who just start out have no reason to mess with distortion.

It's the same as paintball, you don't want to give a started a timmy, but probably a tippmann or something and if he gets better and sticks with it, give him the timmy.

No... No no no... Anyone who plays should not even suggest an electric to you, if this is your first guitar...

As others have already said, if you are serious about learning, start on an acoustic... An electric will mask your true skills starting out and not allow you to progress like an acoustic will... If you really had to go electric, get an acoustic/electric with an acoustic amp...

Look at lower end Fenders and Gibsons for some decent guitars...

Besides, Squier is crap anyway... Not worth shelling out three bills...

I just want an electric because that's the kind of music I'm going to be playing.  I want to work out some of Hendrix's solos and stuff like that.  I don't really want to have guitar as my primary instrument because I've already invested over 1.5K into my trumpet and countless hours of practice and gigs.  I just want to add another instrument to my list and have some fun while I'm at it...

i got the squier pack as my first guitar. be sure when you first get it to loosen the bridge then retune. they tighten their bridge way too much, and be sure to dust around the pickups cause after a while of not playing it sounds bad.

if you want to be like hendrix, youll have to buy pedals and stuff too...

Ok.  I've made a new decision!  I'm going to go with an acoustic because you people told me to.  Does anyone have any recomendations on model or whatever.  Remember, no more than $300...

Edit - I can already read music, so I don't need any "Starter Kits" or crap like that.  I've been playing trumpet and fooling around on bass guitar for like 6 years now (the bass is my friends), so I can already read and I know all the notes in both clefs and stuff like that...

Bro, if you plan on working out some HENDRIX SOLOS, you're kind of going to need some hours spent on your guitar learning the BASICS first...

Glad you woke up and realized to get an acoustic...

Just look into some lower-price Fender DGs, Gibsons (higher end Epiphones are also decent), Takamine... A solid spruce top is also a nice feature to help tone out...

You can get a really nice beginner guitar for $300...

Thanks.  I kind of figured that guitar would be easier than trumpet (which it is) because you never run out of breath on guitar and if you pluck the right string, you get the right note.  So, why does it matter if you get a higer end one?  Is it the material, or just the ammount of time and precision put in to making it?

Here's my best advice...

Go to your local guitar store... Have them help instruct you in buying an acoustic guitar... Take a lesson...

Edit: Take many lessons......... You have just a little to learn... This ain't your trumpet no mo'...

It'll take you a while to learn Hendrix, a long time probably.

But for $300, look on ebay for used Takamine's.  I got my for $400 but it was a $600 guitar.

squire package the best dealif you're just looking for something to mess around with when you're bored.

All that "you'll be way better if you start with an acoustic" is  b.s.  I started with acoustic, my friend start electric, we been playin a couple years now and we are still even as far as skill goes. of course I've gotten an electric by now. I've got an Epiphone Explorer and it plays very well.
