So me and my friend had another one of our conversations and we were talkin about the book Starship Troopers by Robert Hienlien and how he talks about people being whipped in the town square for committing crimes. We'll we were talking and we decided that even though it sounds barbaric to our pc society that we've created in the last 60 years it really wouldn't be that bad of an idea. I really think if we started sentencing criminals to lashes in public instead of months and parole that the crime rate would drop through the floor. I mean seriously, what sounds worse, a few months in a place where you are fed and clothed and taken care of at tax payer expense or being whipped 15 times infront of a crowd of spectators. And think about being one of those spectators, I bet you wouldn't do whatever that guy did. I know it would never happen in today's America but it's still an interesting theory. Your thoughts?

I agree, belive whatever you do, should be done back to you. I dont think it would work, the punishments would have to be much worse than 15 whips in public.

The eye for an eye worked very well for the egyptions. So I cant see how it could not work  for us too.

Besides - I would much rather have 15 lashes than 6 months jail.  Not even a close contest.

Jail serves a variety of functions, at least in theory - it keeps people from committing crimes while in prison, it gives society a chance to brainwash them, and it provides punishment/deterrant.  Whipping only provides the punishment/deterrant.  It doesn't take criminals off the street, and provides no brainwashing opportunity.

And, unless you are talking permanent disfigurement/crippling (a la Taliban), I challenge the deterrant value of physical punishment.  As mentioned above, I would certainly choose a significant amount of temporary pain over a lengthy jail term.  I suspect many others would as well.

LOL This will sound sick but my friends and I go for corporal puishment hands down, we don't even have to be asked. Sometimes when we're bored we think of ideas on how to do it.

Eye for an eye definitly doesn't work. People will respond until things got completely unruly. And then would 15 lashes or 6 months in jail matter?

i think the book might have been a parable for nazism, well at any rate i know the movie was(pile of pooh) but getting whipped, if you get whipped enough times, its possible to die, i dont want anyone to get whipped for stealing a pack of condoms

Put a standard tattoo on their face every time they commit a crime then send them to jail.

One for while there in jail, and a small addition when they get out so you can easily identify escaped convicts.

Thats exactly how me and my friends are. If you commit a crime you get that same crime down to you only worse.

My question is, regardless of the crime committed, who has the right to determine what kind of physical punishment is taken? Who is better than anyone else that they can choose how to physically harm the criminal?

the government. they are under the impression that "might is right" so i guess what they say goes in their own country

I would never be for that type of punishment because it isn't just. The government, filled with the same greedy people the rest of the world is, should not be able to physically harm a criminal, only detain them like prison.

Today I was teaching my anger management class in the 2700 man medium security prison that I work in.  An inmate was discussing how he gets furious about the inmate in the bottom bunk of their bunk bed who keeps masturbating nearly non-stop.  It shakes the bed and of course there are the noises of pleasure emanating from the lower bunk.  Are you sure that prison is the easy place that it is purported to be?  I'll be happy to tell stories of what it is like to lose your freedom and live in a prison.

Yeah, prison isn't a vacation. I'm sure some things could be taken out, but for the most part, it seems like good enough punishment.

It's too bad treatment for these people is just shoving them into jail and prison and forgetting about them.

To whoever stole the car: you should have beat the hell out of it with bats and such too....just my 2 cents...

Anyway, I like some of what people are saying in here. I agree that whipping(I was using 15 lashes as an example...) wouldn't take people out of society or allow you to "brain wash" them but I'm not saying that we do this to people who need to be taken out of society. They should either be put in jail for a long long time or killed, I'm just saying that instead of paying for someones life for a year and a half because they had sex with someone 30 years younger than them who happened to be a relative(true case, saw the trial) that it would be better just to put them in front of everyone, make sure everyone knows what they did, give 'em 30 lashes and put 'em on a strict parole. That and I really really think it would deter people from doing stupid crap like stealing cars or purses or jumping white people for thier shoes or whatever, especially if you had the scars from the last time or your best friend did. Oh and btw, when do we "brain wash" our inmates and when does it work? We don't much and it doesn't. sumthin like 89% of inmates are in at least 3 times. So really, whats the point? Not to mention, it would kind of brain wash them. For one they get the shame and physical pain, also known as negitive reenforcment which is a well known "brain washing" technique. Also, all those onlookers will have that same negitive reenforcment, just a softer version. So really, you still have that effect.

ps
The Tattoo idea it awsome too.

They should be whipped or killed? And you have the authority to make those types of monumental decisions. Regardless of what the person did they are still a citizen and should be punished by incarceration. No person or government has the right to physically harm or kill their citizens.

Beg to differ there, Dune - I don't see that a government has any less "right" to physically harm its citizens than it has to incarcerate them.  Just a matter of current rules and expectations.

I personally believe the corporeal punishment is generally counterproductive (with the possible exception of the death penalty), but certainly don't see any reason why we couldn't have it.

Umm, Yeah...Public Lashings? Tatoos?

Back a couple hundred years ago some guys had this to say about it:

Amendment VIII:

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

I understand your point; however, in terms of punishment, I see physical harm and killing to be a decision that cannot at any time be made by anyone. Incarceration on the other hand seems almost like immigration, if it's the government's land they can choose who lives on it.

Interesting distinction.  But by that logic, should not the correct punishment be banishment, rather than imprisonment?

Posted By: Dune

Very true, but with immigration you deport back to their original country. If the original country is America, then incarceration. It's not that simple of course, but just a different way to look at it.

If they were to bring it back, look how horrible and inhuman it looks, they would make the crime rate drop(maybe) noone wants to die like that. If nothing eles, it sure will be alot cheaper...

As a form of capital punishment, the firing squad wouldn't be cheaper. The appeals process and such are the reasons it is so expensive in the first place. Plus, it is shown that capital punishment, no matter what form, is not a deterrent.

I don't belive in corporal punishment. I recieved swats six times by a strong man then didn't want to go back to school. If I ever become a principle I will not have it at my school.

I think I will sit back and watch and see what further unfolds. I have enough prisoner reform theories in my classes.

I will say that the big problem is that there is no focus, budget, or care on prisoner rehabilitation. This is a huge generalization of the Crimial Justice system, but if an example is shown that refutes, this statement it will be of the rarest situation.
