Hi guys, newbie to this forum but hope to find some help.

I have a 98 Custom that's developed a peculiar problem, it'll "runaway" after I shoot sometimes on the first shot, sometimes after a shot or two. It's like it's not re-cocking all the way and it goes into "full auto" mode until it either starves for air, or you grab the cocking lever and manually stop it from firing.

I've replaced/tried different main springs, sear springs, even re-oringed the valve, and removed my double trigger and put the stock trigger back on all with the same result.

Is it a problem with my valve that (re) o-ringing it didn't cure? Is it something I'm missing?

The only irregularity I've noticed is my drive pin (operating rod) is very very slightly bent. Barely even enough to notice. It's not cause a visible bind in the main spring or and "roughness" in operation.

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated. I already ordered all new internals from Tippmann this morning and they're on the way, but I was hoping someone could pin-point the problem for me...I'm stumped.

Check your sear.  If it's worn too much it just won't catch the rear bolt properly (or consistently).  Other than that, you've pretty much done everything you can.  Your last resort is to let Tippmann take care of it.  Send it in to them and they'll usually fix it for free (less the cost of parts).

Thanks for the encouragment. It's very frustrating when you think you know what you're doing but still can't find/diagnose the problem.

I have replaced the sear recently, and the leading edge looks nice and crisp. I'm hoping the new valve and other parts will cure it...but I'm still curious as to why it's doing this..

Have you oiled the valve? Could be the valve pin isn't opening all the way to allow air to push the rear bolt back enough. Might also be blockage in air supply lines. More than likely it is the CVX.

After you get your replacement, take apart the old CVX and see what the problem was.

I don't use CO2, I use HPA..and have tried several tanks of various fill..it's not a "supply" problem.

LordJovian, I agree, I'm hopeful/optomistic that the new valve will hook me up. It's gotta be something I've over-looked inside the valve.

I had an expansion chamber with a vert adapter and a remote line and my gun was doing that to me at my friends house. I field stripped the eintire thing and tok out the vert adapter and expansion chamber. I know its not the same problem but it was doing the same thing

Could be a blockage in you air line from the ASA to the valve.  You'd need another airline to test this theory.  I would discount it if you are still getting good velocity.

If it is not the sear, it could be the cup seal in the valve. My Pro-Carbine did the same thing, only it was off and on. I replaced the valve and the problem vanished.

Well, if you havent already make sure that the valve bolts on the side of the gun are tight.

You may also want to check the o-ring on the rear bolt. This o-ring has to be in good condition for the valve to be able to blast the rear bolt back enough for the sear to catch it. If it's broken or damaged and isn't making a good seal with the valve then it could definitely cause your problem.

I had the same problem.  It was a combination of a cracked slightly cracked powetube and a bad sear.  You might want to look real close at you powertube and look for a crack.
