Well a me and a few of my buddies figured we try and take this up jus to screw around. But we decided to get serious with it and hope to continue doing this. not gonna be a one time thing. Well we found us about 10 acres of woodland and are gonna start playing on it. We havent bought anything at all and are just looking right now. We are hoping to go out and buy basicaly the same gun and all. We have about 20 people wanting to play and we were gonna do a basic capture the flag type games. I want to know what gun would be best. We are hoping not to go over about 150-200 a gun (cheaper the better customize later). I was lookin at the 98 custom at academy that comes with the gun, a mask, 12 oz tank, and a 200 round hopper for $168. is that a good deal or do i need to keep lookin?

That is a great deal.
You should have fun with 20 of those.

Make sure you can play on that land.

Not bad, But I would recommend the a5. But then again, you are just getting into it. What kind of mask, it is very important not to get stuck with crap like "extreme rage", go for vforce morph, excellent quality for a good price. That is a decent deal. I say go for it, You cannot beat a tippmann for a new player, because if you break it, you know tippmann will back it. Good luck!

Yeah it seems to be a good deal, better than buying online, your tippmann wont break, but it is good to have a store close to you that will service your gun etc...

I am sorry, I cant make out what you are trying to say...... If it is the new scott mask, cannot remember the name though, It is a good mask. Other than chopping paint, the worst thing out on the field is when your goggles fog up. Check www.pbreview.com for all the reviews you could dream of. It is a great site to get reviews on alot of paintball products. Good luck.

another question is what about the different barrels i can add on and the stocks. I was lookin at the 12" sniper barrel for mine to add on. is that any good? or do i need to look at something else?

Posted By: Monkeybusiness
Date Posted: 30 January 2005 at 8:13pm
Who makes the barrel? You will also need the tippmann 98 thread. Stocks are a waste of money. 14" barrels are the best lenght for both speed and accuracy.

We are probably gonna end up playing for money and stuff so we its gettin more serious and serious day by day. We are hoping to get real tactical with this. But i dont know what im doin soooo..............

It's agood deal but before you buy it I would make sure it's a 98 custom and not a 98 because you can't upgrade the 98 that much

Posted By: BullDawg
Date Posted: 30 January 2005 at 8:30pm

its the custom i made sure of that

Date Posted: 30 January 2005 at 8:33pm
Since your buying so many, see if they will give you a deal, or throw some extras in. I highly reccomend the 98c to new players, very durable, and you can upgrade it later with something like a response trigger.

Date Posted: 30 January 2005 at 8:34pm
well we're buying from academy u think they'd throw extras in?

Posted By: seargeantjim
Date Posted: 30 January 2005 at 8:36pm
Im not sure, Ive never dealt with them. But I know when you buy real firearms for alot of money, you can wield and deal with them easily. In your case your spending over 2 grand, so they better throw something in, if not just tell them u will shop somewhere else.... if your serious enough.

Posted By: BullDawg
Date Posted: 30 January 2005 at 8:41pm
yeah we pretty serious about this we have spent 2 days in the woods setting us up bounderies and cuttin some trails and all.

Posted By: seargeantjim

Well make sure all of you have the money, because you dont want to start making deals with no money, yoy may end up with nothing. I think once before I saw on some website, a bulk order of guns(the more the cheaper) and I believe there was around 20 or so. However im not sure where to find them, maybe someone else knows. It must of been to start your own field.

You're going to need a good local CO2 supplier. Youc an either go to a hardware store and fill up your CO2 tank each time it's empty (which, depending on how far in the woods your field is, could take some time an interrupt play), or if you guysd are VERY serious about this, get a CO2 scale and fill station, and actually bulk-purchase the huge tanks of CO2 they use at fields. Also, you're going to need a lot of paint. With 20 people, if you can pool your money, you may be able to bulk-buy it wholesale.

Many retailers will offer 'field packs' of markers, say 10 or 20 98C packages all together, at a serious discount. Take advantage of these offers if you can find them.

Get some spare parts kits for the 98s. Even though they're tippmanns, with that many you're bound to end up with a few problems. Get lots of o-rings.

Good luck in your endeavours. Hopefully if thigns go well, a few years form now you guys may find yourselves setting up a business with the land and gear you've got. Speaking of the land though, find out who owns it, and make sure you can play there.

Besides on deciding what you kind of markers and other paintballing neccesseties to get and use, you should check to see if you are able to use that land....check wit the city or county ordnances at City Hall....if you fail to do that, theres alsways chance of having the cops come by and have them confiscate all the equipment you spent alot of money on and you and the others could be arrested fer trespassing and not having the proper permits, insurance, etc. or permission to use that land.

You are absolutely right. You can find bulk packages online.Search google till your fingers bleed, then make "academy" match the web price. One thing you must understand.!!!Don't waste your money on aesthetic crap for your gun. Save your money for "air and paint"

yeah we can use the woods they are privately owned and the guy said that we could use them whenever we want (and he wants to play now too) academy matches prices over the net?

Posted By: Ethos

Basically haggle with Academy if you HAVE to get it from them.  If you're looking for upgrades (I believe you mentioned a barrel before), don't be fooled by the words "Sniper Barrel" and such.  Yes, Tippmann has a barrel that increases the distance you can fire from, called the Flatline system, but this is a costly upgrade.  You mentioned you wanted to have all the guns around $200 so after purchasing the 98cs, for barrels I would look into Lapco Bigshots or J&J Ceramics for the 98c.  Lapcos can have machine-gun shrouds and other scenario stuff added on to them, but the cheapest while still greatly effective barrels are J&J.

98cs + J&J = nice beginner setup under $200.  You can add new masks to that that range from $20-80. So you'll be able to keep it cheap and still be able to pool for a CO2 station and paint.

yes we have already things to refill the co2 (just found it out today) and yeah i started asking around and i got someone that will sell them cheaper when i buy in bulk. Now we have about 18 people wanting to play and now that this other guy wants to play out land increased by about 15 more acres. Its lookin good. And Ethos imma look into those J&J barrels, ill probably save up and buy myself a flatline system but ill tell the others about them. Thanks. What all what u mean by the machine gun shrouds and other scenario stuff added?

Yes, you can mount a scope to a 98c.  The line you are referring to is called a "remote".  They cost about $20-$30.  You will need a harness that has a spot for your tank.  A 4+1, 6+1, or 8+1 depending on how much paint you want to carry with you.  If you don't have the money for a new barrel right away, you can take a piece of electrical tape and put it over the ports on barrel (the ones in the middle of the barrel).  This will help improve on accuracy and air consistency.  Just remember, the longer the barrel, the more air you need to push the ball out.  The flatline is good but, you lose accuracy (depending on the wind).  You may want to look at getting a chrono so you don't have to worry about people shooting over 300fps (big safety concern).  Remember to think SAFETY FIRST.

If I had the money when I started paintball, I would have bought the A-5 b/c of the cyclone feed system (almost guaranteed not to chop a ball).  The only time I chop with my 98c, is when I try to shoot over 10bps for more than a few seconds.  A fast hopper would fix this problem.

Good luck.
