When is Asian, Latin, Indian, Islander, and White history months? hm. ok ignore my first post if any of you saw it. When we have a month celebrating white people, or even latins, then i will have something to say that is positive.. maybe. Well how is black history month "needed" why do we "need" it. Is it necessary to our survival in the hunter gatherer sense of the word?..No.(To those of you that that sounds familiar to, i couldnt resist) We need it about the same amount as an Italian american history month, or a white history month, or chinese or whatever else you want. Hmm. In United States History books "whitey's" history covers 97 percent of the text. Except for slaverly and MLK, blacks have little mention and most of it not is written from a positive perspective. So in order to raise American awarness to American History outside the white race. Some months are set aside to hopefully raise the awarness of the positive history of other races.
Sounds to me like it is a more even playing field not "special treatment." Now go eat some peanut butter.... -------------

Not saying we need a White-history month, but could you imagine the spaz attacks people would have if one were introduced? Not just from african-americans, but from multiple racial groups. -------------

It doesn't seem to really matter anyways, nothing big really happens
during this month anyways, from what I've noticed, just stuff on the
history channel about black people and that's about all

Meh. I don't mind Black History Month, probably because my schools haven't ever been super-oppressive about it.
I bet that if my schools forced me to write essays about black people SOLELY BECAUSE THEY WERE BLACK I might get mad.. quickly. For those wondering about the 'why hate on Black History Month' bit, think about this. It's not necessarily that they have their own history month (I honestly don't care much one way or the other), but that people make a big deal out of it. I'm sure that a lot of the people who resent the idea have spent years in school being forced to recognize it as a major event. It's important and raises the awareness level of more than a few intolerant hicks, but it's really easy to cheese people off and make it look like you're pushing black supremacy if you go overboard on it. Like I said, I don't have a problem with it, but I know I would if it was a major event for me, and so I can easily see people resenting the idea of a whole month for one race. It's not that they're a different race, it's being forced to sit there and praise people BECAUSE they're a different race, instead of by what they do. An example would be the already-alluded-to George Washington Carver. My school has traditionally done stuff like: This is Black History Month, so we're going to write an essay about George Washington Carver and his work with peanuts and other crops. A school that pushes it too far would be like this: This is Black History Month, so we're going to pick a famous black person and do an essay on them.. George Washington Carver sounds good. The assignment would then go on to assign a big project that wouldn't ever be assigned to any other subject. Hopefully some of you get what I'm saying. ------------- Is God real? I think kids should write papers on lynchings and how they happened in the not too distant past. Or infecting blacks with syphilis and tracking their deterioration over decades. The Klan. Getting a black woman pregnant and hiding it like Strom Thurmond did. My son goes to a private church school that never teaches these things and he drives his teachers crazy when he asks about stuff like that. I think I keep him in the school just to drive the neocon faculty nuts. |

through crap throughout history. What about the Indians?
You know that around when the Indian Removal Act and the war with the
Indains was going on, we gave them blankets and things of the such as a
kind of peace offering. The blankets were infected with smallpox
intentionally and we almost wiped out an entire tribe. They
aren't pissing and moaning. Back in the day of the Romans,
Christians were thrown into the Collesum(sp) with lions and eaten alive
for show. We aren't whinning about it. Don't get me started
on the Jews... I will show support for the Black (why is it when it is something like this it is approprate to call that race "Black" when other times they insist on "African American"?) History month when an Italian History month is created. /rant -------------

Who's whining about what, sure there are arguments about how the 'whites' forced the 'blacks' into slavery, but no black person is whining, and complaining enough to have a "black history month". What I dont understand is why those who arnt 'black' care so much, this month is to inform north america about 'black history', it is your choice whether you participate or not, I'm not saying its not important, but you dont exactly have to get involved. But 100 years down the road, when us 'blacks' are paid reprations and chicken is $600 a bucket, then you can have for 'Itialian history month'. -------------

Yeah i was in traffic last summer with a buddy of mine. Some guy in an escaladae, tinted windows and rims and all that. So we pull up next to him. So we are like "Hey *insert non racial swear word here* you almost hit us! So he rolls down his window and hes like "What U say to mee CRACKAH!?!?" Me and my budy got out in the middle of traffic and, well. I doubt he will say anything like that to anyone. Any person, be it white or black (more blacks than white, cause they are generaly more rude), if the are disrespectful to anyone in that class (teacher, student (even if I don't like them)), I don't interact with them. If one of them (people I dont interact with) says something to me, even if its respectful or is not offensive, I don't respond. I just sit there doing what I'm doing and eventually they will get just to leave me alone. I will never talk to that person unless it is in a life or death situation. |

That's a great point but we are talking American history. Still the same rule applies. in addition there is a lot of stuff on the civil rights movement and nearly all of it makes the attempt to make white people look evil. It really doesn't mention a whole lot of white people who did the right thing during this time period. The only things we are shown in my school is a movie on the klan and a couple of police brutalities. Maybe my school is the exception but I doubt it. |
