i go to a catholic skool and in the morning they say a prayer and the pledge over the intercom. in theology class(1st period) the intercom clicks on, and as usual i dont fold my hands or nething (im atheist) and this time, halfway thru the 3rd quarter my teacher decides to give me an office referal for not folding my hands (disrespect she sed) even tho i never did n she didnt care before, so ytf does she now? i ended up getting a saturday detention which is 2 hours long. im not gonna serve it tho, thats bs thers even a statement of beliefs that clearly says if ur not catholic u dont have to pray just stand and be silent which is what i was doing

ha ha. i went to a catholic school. its private so they can force you to do anything they want. and since the school is made for catholics, they dont give a damn about any other opinions on any religion. its all about the christians. catholic school really screwed me up for public. i knew no one and had no friends (especialy chics), didnt know what to do, and looked like a total idiot. but i quickly learned, and now im pretty popular. public school rules compared to that!

I'd rather see some "rebel" sit down and do a "thousand-mile-stare" at the wall during the pledge, rather then him/her stand up and mindlessly parrot the lines out of sync with the rest of his/her class.
Does anyone really realise what it means to "Pledge Allegiance"?
If you are not going to hold loyal and steadfast to the flag why the hell would you "Pledge Allegiance" to it in the first place, you mouth-breathers?
I have the same attitude towards people who say "I love you" with out actually meaning it. I realise that each one of us has our own definition for love, but just beacuse you choose to hug a select few of your classmates each and every day (and by "select few" I mean anything that moves, opposite sex or not. Deny it if you wish, but hugging is nothing more than a fad in this day and age.) does not nessicairly mean that you truly "love" them, you middle-school failures.

Public schools are allowed to teach about the main religions for historical/informational purposes ONLY.
Although they are allowed to teach about the religions, however, they are NOT allowed to endorse any one religion... at all.. If they do, it is a violation of the first ammendment (and any other collective bills, laws, policies, and procedures that also pertain to the subject at hand (freedom of religiong, press, etc.))

The fact is the school is private and you have to abide by the

(Yes, I am atheist also, don't try to pull that "u only h8 me cuz im atheast" crap on me. It doesn't work. Just beacuse you are atheist does not mean you are immune to punishments relating to your incompentence (or "ignorance") towards follow simple daily rules, directions, and procedures. Just beacuse the school you go to recognises one religion over (the lack of) another does not give you the right to blatently defy the rules and procedures.)

I dont stand for the pledge or pray in the morning half the time, not because I am trying to be a hooligan or anything, and im not an atheist, just usually I am busy making up homework I forgot to do the night before.

Personally, I hate it that kids don't stand for the pledge just because they think that they're being conformist by repeating it. The whole point is that you remember that this country is based around a community, not your own self, you insolent little punks. Same with the way you're acting in Catholic school-if you don't agree with the basis of the school, why are you there?

go to a catholic school...im not even catholic (lutheran) and i still
think you desvered that detention
maybe its a sign from God-but hey, if he really wants to send a
sign, he should make the roof collapse on you when your staying home
skipping saturday detention, or better yet, the floor fall out from
beneath you
please find God, he might make your pitiful existence on this earth a little less wretched and meaningless |
Very Christianly of you..

Yeah nice job. If you are just going to be some petulant child and not fold your hands during prayer. You deserve it, just like kids that wont stand for the pledge, just your little way of trying to be rebelious, you screwed up just do your time. |
Yeah, when i had to say the pledge in school, i rarely said it. I stopped saying outloud around sophmore year. Mainly because i had been saying it for over 9 some odd years. I just stood up and said it in my head. Plus i dont like doing a whole lot of anything at 7:20 in the morning. I just stood up out of respect.
In fairfax county, its now legislation that school have to have a moment of silence. For "reflection" its for prayer. But i resent the fact that we cant call it prayer. No one ever prays it hilarious. I actualy got a detention for talking, the teachers get REALLY offended and some students try to look at you with some holier than though attitude. I would just give them the finger and make em shut it.
But this kid is in a private school, i mean you could at least fold your hands and sit there. You dont have to openly go against the grain knowing you will offend poeple.

freakin' leave it...No one's forcing you to live here...It's getting

Yeah, if its really that bad, that you wouldnt stand up for two minutes. You can leave. The under god thing is over-done. Leave it alone. Its not that big of an issue. Find something else to complain about. There are lots more pressing isues you could gribe about.

They do that in my school too. It's because of 9/11. They started doing it on September 12 2001. At least they did at my school.
Maybe your teachers get offended because you talking during that time.

What gets me is my highschool doesn't say it at all because they don't want to be sewed. Its bull, and the idiotic ppl who can't stand up for the pledge of allegiance...........they can just leave this country because none of us are interested in ppl who live here and dont believe in our flag.
For example (big sigh), there are Jehovah's witnesses on my block.....the parents work at the UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE!!!!!!! They have a freakin flag on their uniform!!!!!!!!!! I don't understand ppl like that. They can't stand the U.S. but yet they work for a U.S. government paid company. This is seriously ridiculous. And for all the ppl who say "oh dont say under god in the pledge of allegiance" you can just get the *heck* out of this country because no one wants to listen to you...........ahhhhhhhh....glad i got that off of my back...........

Bango, it wasnt so much as i was having a convorsation or anything. A couple words and people are like "Oh my god! Its the moment of SILENCE! GOD!" Just people get really anal about it.
Razgriz1, they dont need to leave the country. Everyone who is not like you doesnt need to leave the country. What i was saying is, if you dont have enough repect for a country to stand for a couple of minutes. You can leave if it gets that bad.

People like you are the reason I dont stand for the pledge alot. I like to see you guys flip out and run around screaming about how I have "no respect".
Why do I have to repeat some mindless speach every day just to prove im a "good American?"
On days when you dont have school do you stand up and say it every morning in your house alone or just at school and sports game? Yeah, didnt think so.

Doing the pledge of allegiance everyday isnt about saying im a good american its saying that you have respect for everything done enforced by the government of the United States. It shows that you will always be loyal to the U.S. in no matter what situation......... So stop your complaining about this crap and move on with life..........

I dont, (especially with the president we have now) agree with alot the government does. I do not have respect for the government. I do not HAVE to respect the government. Thats the best part of our government. Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom of Protest. I dont have to stand up for the pledge, And I can still live here. Great isnt it?
Oh, and I dont know if I will always live in the USA. If I had my choice I wouldnt.

Sure you can, you should always do that. But its the act of standing, do you take off your hat during the national anthem? Put your hand over your heart? Salute if you are in the military? Its the same, you stand out of respect. Its what is expected.

I take my hat off during the Star Spangled Banner, but I dont do any of the other things.
I know its "expected", and thats the sorry part that it is.

If you really freakin' hate this country so much why don't you just freakin' leave it...No one's forcing you to live here...It's getting annoying...You bring nothing to this forum except arguments

I'm sorry that my ability to invoke the freedom of speech and believe in what rights we have in this country are not as important as your 1000 post parties and all the other useful information you bring to the forum. Not saying the pledge doesn't mean I hate the country, it's your misunderstanding that gives us such a bad name. A few of the forumers here are displaying the first after effects of what is called the Post 9-11 generation. Those kids who were 8-14 years old on 9-11 and now follow around the "rally around the flag" crap and spew constant rhetorical phrases like "These colors don't run." Being labeled "with the terrorists" by my own president because I don't believe in his god, nor would I like to say a pledge that involves such an outrageous claim as "under god," shows me that people need to rebel. I will not move, it is a free country, and just as much as you have the freedom to believe in this patriotic crap, I have the freedom to search for the corrupt, the spin, and all the other crap our government hides.

Oh on that point - one's freedom of speech adn 1st amendment rights in
general only extend so far as until the point where they begin to
impede others 1st amendment rights.

That's correct. Although a touchy subject, one that has been ruled on in many many ways, some people still do not understand it. Many high schoolers think that the government should have say on what newspapers print. While other high schoolers think it is illegal to burn the American flag.

No way should government have a say in what the newspapers say. If they did, this country would be just like china in the 80s

You know, I always get a big kick out of those patriotic individuals who insist on inviting those who do not share their patriotic fever to leave the country.
Burning the flag, questioning the president, refusing to stand for the pledge of alegance, and refusing to participate in religous ceremonies and events are all American things to do.
We pride ourselves so much on not being like our European ancestors and yet are so quick to adopt their intolerance when it comes to these acts of "un-patriotic" behavior.
The forefathers of this country founded it on the belief that free men, truely free men, are those that are allowed to express their views no matter how unpopular they may be yet set up our governmental system so that while the individual voice would be heard, the majority would still lead. That delicate balance between individual rights and the rights of a social concousness are the root of all these discussions. Where does the right of a KKK member to burn a cross stop? It stops well before the lawn of a member of the community who is African American and most would argue that it stops at his/her property line. Where does the right for a Neo-Nazi organization to hold a peaceful rally stop? When it trapses on the steps of a synagogue or actively looks to incite a riot.
I may not agree with the view of a KKK cross burner or a marching Neo-Nazi...as a matter of fact I stand pretty polar to their views of the world...but as an American I would defend their right to follow, speak, and print whatever it is they wish so long as it fell within the laws set forth by our constitution (meaning those federal laws which have been set over the years to augment and clarify the constitutional admendments) with my life. For if they do not have the right to express their beliefs and persue their dreams then when will the time come when a view or belief I hold will go against the popular grain and become illegal as well? (Think paintball here people)
No, a true patriot will disagree with what they do, but they will never ask them to leave because of it.

"the pledge of allegiance is obedience training"
i don't stand or say the pledge. Its more respectful for me not to, than to hide my beliefs and pretend.
"i pledge allegiance to the world, nothing more nothing less than my humanity"
i love how all these people tell you to get out of the country if you don't like it. Did Sam Adams just leave because he didn't like the government? How easily some people forget about why this country was started. We have become so blind to our nationalism that we forget that the world is full of people, not made of friendly and enemy nations.
"i stand not by my country, but by the people of the world. No Fences, No Borders, Free movement for all"

Just so you all know, I read the first page and that's it, I'm to lazy to read the rest so if I restate something, I'm sorry, give me some lee way (Or however you spell it). First of all, I'd like to say, I'm a Christain, not a Catholic as many people confuse the two. I used to go to a private school. Yes, as it is private they can make you do things you don't wanna do. Yes, you should do what they say, just for respectful reasons. Not serving the detention will just prove that you are disrespectful and prove the teachers claims. Being you don't respect the authority at your school, this doesn't help your case. Do as your elders say, then you will be treated differently. It's all about your attitude and the respect you show (Or lack there of).
I'm not going to preach right now cause I don't know the forum rules about it, but if I were you, I'd honestly look into God.
