So, I have a bit of a dispute with my parents...
Over Easter Break, they want to go and visit my relatives in Alabama. I wouldn't have a problem with this, but I just took a lot of time off at Christmas to go down there. My boss isn't too happy about theweek to week-and-a-half off I'd need (nor am I, as it messes up my paychecks badly).
I would THINK that the simplest solution would be for me to stay home and everyone else go, maybe with a neighbor watching to make sure I wasn't having parties or anything.
My parents don't want to do this. My mom says she really NEEDS to be in Alabama to visit her parents and brothers/sisters... But she then said that if I can't get the time off work, none of us are going.
I think it's a bit unreasonable that they keep wanting me to take time off work, messing up my pay and pissing my boss off, and I think it's a bit silly that I'm 17 and they won't even let me stay home alone for 5 days or so with me promising no parties and such.
What do you guys think? (I know it'll be biased because most here are under 18, but I'm sure a few older members have opinions too.)

perhaps you could work extra hours the week before and the week after your excursion to make up for the time off. Im sure if you spoke with your boss you 2 could work something out

Since they know you smoke and such, i don't blame them.
Just tell your parents that you really need the money for that one and
a half weeks and if you miss that, you won't be able to pay for
insurance......ect.

man your parents are effin stupid no offense. you're 17. if you can't take care of yourself then wtf. I think you need to tell them keeping a job is more important than overly frequent visits.

It's not amazingly important, but with it being Spring Break/Easter, a lot of people want the time off. Also, I'm the only person in my station who they consider completely dependable and good at the job.
I've been there over a year, and I've taken basically every holiday off for family stuff. I'm getting tired of messing up my pay, and my boss is getting tired of making other people work the holidays (sometimes he does it himself when other people all leave).
I don't even really want to go down to Alabama. If it weren't for work, going would be cool, but it messes everything up too much. I'd rather just stay here and spend some time with my friends & gf than go back down there, especially since I was just there 2 months ago.
Metallica: granted, they do know and all that stuff... But I would actually kinda think the fact that they know and are fairly cool with it wouldn't hurt me too badly; they know I do it, so it's not like I'm going to start just because they leave, if you take my meaning.
These family trips never cause anything but trouble. 13 hours in a car each way always starts fights.
I don't see what's wrong with me chilling out by myself for a few days. It would be nice to not have people bugging me every 5 minutes to do something.

Man... Shes... Heres how i see it. "If i cant get off work, none of us are going"-Your Mom. But on the other hand. "If you cant get off work, your still going, tough crackers" I would raise all hell about that.

Oh yeah, just to add...
I told my parents, "I'll try to get the time off, but if I can't, I can't; That's all there is to it. I can't do anything if Dave (the boss) won't give me time off."
My dad said, "Yes there is. Quit."
It's like.... I'm not quitting a job I've been at for over a year because I can't get one holiday off out of that year. He's still got that whole, "You're just a kid, so anything happening in your life is completely minor and unimportant," fixation going on.

Well, they've never trusted me. Even a few months ago, the longest I'd ever spent home alone was like 12 hours.
Now I can almost guarantee they'll bring up the, "Zomg, you smoke pot sometimes," argument. It's not like going to Alabama is going to prevent me from doing it though... As soon as I get back I probably will (assuming I do go).

You need to be trustworthy, and it sounds like you did something recently that broke their trust with you.
Sorry this post doesn't solve your dilemma or answer your question. What your parents need is trust that you can handle being alone in a responsible manner.

Well yeah, they were a bit annoyed when they found out I'd started again. But I think they've recognized that there's nothing they can really do about it unless they want to call the police, and that wouldn't really help anyone.
Cedric: I just kinda said that I DID tell them that, and they basically told me, "You're going, even if you have to quit." I'm not quitting. Screw them.

See, I would accept that if that was the case... But for 16 years I was the super good kid that never did anything wrong, and they still wouldn't let me do jack<crap>.
Lately I haven't been their "perfect son," but they never let me do anything anyways, so that's not really a good reason/excuse.

Sit down with them and have a serious no bull**edited** talk. If they
can't do that, than there is nothing you can do. Just don't
go. It's not like they can force you into that car. If they
don't go, than they don't. Sure it would be nice to have the
house to yourself, but if your parents can't realize you are old and
mature enough to handle yourself and make your own decisions than there
is nothing you can do about it.
