I'm in an extraordinarily heated debate right now.
I am, of course, right. It's only fair, however to bring it to a larger crowd.
Name for me the top five most influential modern musicians of all
time. Help me out, here.

I mean seriously, people.
As far as modern music goes, Bob Dylan wins bar none. The Beatles are
certainly up there, but they were largely influenced by Dylan themselves.
This is so sad.
My list:
Bob Dylan
The Beatles
Buddy Holly
Elvis
Leonard Cohen*
*This is probably my personal oppinion clouding my judgement.

No high horse, here.
I never denied that no good music has been made in the past fifteen
years. I listen to tons of music made within the past fifteen years.
But as for the question, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that
Dylan takes the cake as far as overall influence. And I think pretty much
any serious musician would agree. It's not a question of
taste, oppinion, or record sales.
You simply can NOT suggest that folks such as Brad Nowell
(Marley + Dead), Sabbath (Stones), Yellow Card or Linkin Park
(the epitome of cliché) have had anywhere near the effect on music
as Dylan or The Beatles. It doesn't matter how much you love listening to
them. To suggest that "artists" such as the ones I've mentioned above
have had half as profound an effect as Dylan has on the music industry is
not oppinion...it's just flat out wrong.
I really dunno where the fifteen years comment came from, Whale. I
listen to an absurd amount of current music.

I was mostly just messin' with you about the 15 years thing.
When you said "modern", I think 15-20 years.
If we are talking about modern influances on now modern music, The Clash take the cake. They got polotics into punk rock. Hell, they got punk and newage on the charts. They had a laid back sound that you can hear in todays music. Also they mixed dub, hip-hop, and rap (Yes Rap, listen to The Clash's song RadioClash) and other sounds into their music to give it a vibe. Look at the amount of bands that do that today.

i kinda agree but the sex pistols hit it big before the clash even though they formed roughly the same time, and if you say clash then you also have to say ramones. Ramones and Sex Pistols were real punks because they left polotics out of it, a true punk only cares about the lack of government and polotics

I don't know where you come off putting sublime into the same category as yellowcard or linkin park...
sublime was their only genre... they didn't give a crap about all these
music genres at the time...they used a little of everything in their
music....sublime wasn't just music but a lifestyle...it was hanging out
with your best buddies tossing a few ones back and lighting up...and
just playing music, getting into it...brad was able to recycle many
older songs and just make awesome lyrics off the top of his
head...he lead the way for many many more bands coming out of
long beach...i suggest you pick up/download a copy of 40 oz. to freedom
and play it on a nice stereo with good bass and just see yourself get
caught up in the music...there's just so many layers to sublime's
music...you're entitled to your opinion but don't you dare classify
sublime into some pop/untalented category...you don't know how many
bands have tried to recreate what sublime has done...sublime actually
was on the break of creating this whole new level of music in the
industry until unfortunately brad passed away from his drug addiction
and who are you to beat down on freakin' mike portnoy or trent
reznor...trent reznor is a freakin' music genious that put an impact on
so much of the industrial rock and his special style of music...mike
portnoy...the man is just full of talent...he has maybe done it all
john petrucci perhaps one of the greatest if not the greatest guitar
player to live?...petrucci is almost one of every musicians idols

Um. The only category I put Sublime and Yellowcard/Linkin Park
in together would be the "not as influential as Bob Dylan" category.
For the record I've listened to 40 Oz. To Freedom many a time, and while
it's a fun album (albeit overplayed), Sublime doesn't come close to having
the type of influence Bob Dylan had.
Plain and simple.
Oh, and please point out where I "beat down on" Mike Portnoy
or Trent Reznor. I've said next to nothing about what I like and dislike, as
far as music, in this thread.

It seems like this comment was a little misguided.
1. I created this thread for experimental purposes to try and resolve a
debate with a relative. For my purposes, the modern music we're talking
about is from about the 1920's-Today.
2. Of course it all comes from some previous influence.. Nobody ever
denied that. The question is, of the modern (1900-Today, happy?)
musicians out there, who has been most influential.

were influential in my opinion...i was pissed off because you grouped
sublime together with bands such as yellowcard...how would you like it
if i put bob dylan in the same group as rod stewart |
Um, how is it not implied that you consider Bob Dylan to be less
influential than the bands you listed on your "top five most influential
artists", when you left Bob Dylan off of the list all together?
I just don't see the logic.
As for the Rod Stewart/Bob Dylan thing, I wouldn't mind you grouping
them together if the list was appropriate. For example, Bob Dylan and
Rod Stewart might both be featured on the "singers with bad hair" list.
(Rod Stewart would, naturally, be much higher up on said list than Dylan)
It's perfectly acceptable to group Linkin Park and Sublime together when
the list is regarding bands that aren't as influential as Dylan.
Oh, and as for Pertucci -- You've got to be kidding me. He wouldn't be
playing the way he plays without Hendrix.

The most influencial bands are the ones that came out 20-15 years ago, and are still played on the radio, in movies, and all that.
Black Sabath
Bob Dylan
Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Sugar Hill Gang(first rap group to break through the the white comunity)
The Ramones(or sex pistols)
The bands that have stood the test of time. The bands that have long since disbanded, but their lyrics still inspire great emotion 30 years later. Those are the earth shatering most influential bands. The bands that, when you hear the song on the radio, you stop what your doing and think about when you were a kid. Those are the MOST influencial bands.

I seriously doubt you listen to either of those two. The way you
expressed your musical views in the other thread, you are not worthy to
speak Bob Dylan's name.

those are the only ones I've ever listened to who were influential on a wide variety of music.
Of course, in the last ten years Green Day would have to be in there.

flogging molly is not very influential, if you want to talk about the irish genre you have to talk about The Dubliners, The Chieftans, the Irish Rovers, the Pouges, and The Clancy Brothers

Well wait, if you are talking Irish, you have to include U2... My aunt called me complaining about how U2 drew a bigger crowd in her home town than the pope. It was funny.

This seems like a rather heated debate for sure. Now, lets see...influencial....well, here's my list:
1) Beatles : Easily one of the most influecial bands ever
2) Elvis: He changed the music industry completely
3) 2Pac : I don't like hip hop or rap, but the guy had a profound impact on the music industry.
4) Simon and Garfunkel : Easily one of the greatest duo's to ever sing together.
5) Bob Dylan : Again, another one legend who shaped the music world
These are in no particular order, just some that came to mind. I think Johnny Cash is pretty high up there too, but this is top 5.
Just looked at DB's post above me, and I kicked myself. U2 is definately up there. Bono is still one of the most influencial people in the world, and alot of the music industry still follows his lead.
