It annoys me when people refer to things as "jet" or "fighter plane."  I prefer people to refer to things as their call sign (or whatever its called). Such as AV-8 Harrier, F-15 Eagle, AH-64 Apache, B-2 Spirit, F-105 Thunderchief, P-50D Mustang, ect.  You get the point.  Funny anyways, and I wouldn't want a harrier.  They are too unstable (while hovering, they can easily slip to the side, gain momentum (sp?) and then "slide" into the ground).  They also can't even go mach 1.  I would much rather have an F-14 or F-15 which go in excess of 1,400 mph.

actually F-14's are being decomissioned from US forces.  While the F-15's maneuvarability(sp?) far surpassed the other planes of its general "era" its speed cannot stand up next the the F-16, which in turn is being improved upon with the F-22 Raptor(for the USAF) and the JSF, joint strike fighter,(for the other branches) which also have internal weapons bays and supposedly hit well over mach two.

course if you are going for pure speed, go with the SR-71 Blackbird, unclassified at Mach 3.5, which means it can probably hit at least Mach 3.8(yes, thats a BIG difference, really)
