I just bought and listened to the classic rock opera Tommy by the Who.  I found it amazing, it is kind of creepy but also very intelligent.  Even above the deeper message are some pure rock n roll ballads.  Has anyone else heard the album in its entirety or seen the movie. If so what are your thoughts.

Its a good band. I think every "Punk rocker" needs to know the roots of the ganre before he can call himself punk.

I like The Mars Volta.  Their stuff is sort of like a rock opera I guess.  It tells a deep story and totaly rocks at the same time.

a rock opera is more when it is just one story on an album, in Tommy there is an actual story that can be written down, its not just deep lyrics

Yeah The Who was definatly considered a punk/metal band back then. And they always smashed guitars and amps onstage. Compare their music to others in the late 60s- early 70s, not many like it. Pink Floyd's 1968 "The Nile Song" sounds exactly like any modern heavy metal music, with screaming and yelling, load raspy guitar, and everything else. I couldnt beleive it was 1968.

Tommy is a great movie. Only see it a few times but its one of my favorites.

If you like "rock opera story movie things" like that you should consider watching Pink Floyd The Wall movie. A great dramatic story with the best music ever.

In addition to the fact that the Who are my favorite band, Tommy is what I consider to be the greatest concept album of all time. The Who might not have the most technical melodies, but the writing is genius and the rythym section is possibly the best in all of rock n' roll. (John Entwistle and Keith Moon) The Who are the pioneers of hard rock and deserve all the credit they get.
