Pope in Sharp Turn for Worse with Fever, Infection

By Philip Pullella and Crispian Balmer

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/wl_nm/pope_dc/14741097/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Pope%20John%20Paul%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw - Pope John Paul 's frail health has taken a sharp turn for the worse with very high fever and urinary infection, sending waves of anxiety around the Roman Catholic world.

Italian media said the 84-year-old Pontiff had received the sacrament for the sick and dying commonly known as the Last Rites. It is given to the very seriously ill but does not necessarily mean death is imminent.

"He's ill, very ill," an unnamed medical source was quoted as saying by Italy's Ansa news agency on Friday.

"The world is in anguish. The Pope is fading away," was the headline in one Italian newspaper, Il Resto del Carlino.

The Pope, who is struggling to recover from throat surgery and has been sick for most of the past two months, was not taken to hospital despite the gravity of the situation. One media report said he was too frail to be moved.

Doctors stayed at the Pontiff's bedside into the early hours of Friday morning as hundreds of faithful gathered in St Peter's Square to pray for the man who has led the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics for the past 26 years.

"The Holy Father was today stricken by a very high fever provoked by what has been ascertained to be an infection of the urinary tract," a http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/wl_nm/pope_dc/14741097/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Vatican%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw - Vatican statement said late on Thursday, adding he was receiving "appropriate antibiotic therapy."

Italian news agencies quoted medical sources as saying the Pope was responding to antibiotics but that the situation was critical. They said they next 24 hours would be crucial.

Just hours earlier Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, seen as a possible successor to the Pontiff, told the Austrian news agency APA that the Pope was "approaching, as far as a person can tell, the end of his life."

Schoenborn said he hoped for the Pope's sake that "the moment of relief comes for him."

BURNING FEVER

The Pope's health deteriorated suddenly a day after doctors inserted a feeding tube from his nose into his stomach to try to boost his strength. Italian media reported that his temperature leapt to around 104 F in the late afternoon.

Medical experts said the infection may have spread to his bloodstream, adding that this was a potentially lethal condition given his frailty and the fact that he has http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/wl_nm/pope_dc/14741097/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Parkinson%27s%20disease%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw - Parkinson's disease .

"When someone has advanced Parkinson's disease they're at risk from opportunistic infections because of their debilitated condition," said Dr David Charles, a neurologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

"Most die from some other acute condition, whether pneumonia or a urinary tract infection," Charles said.

Most of the lights of the Papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace were switched off at about midnight (1700 EST), with the exception of one believed to be that set up for medical staff.

Television stations in John Paul's native Poland interrupted their normal programing to tell people of the condition of their most famous native son, a man Poles credit with helping them shake off communism in 1989.

In Rome, hundreds of people, some with tears in their eyes, rushed to the Vatican to pray below the Pope's windows.

"We heard the news, and we're here to pray. We feel we need to be close to the Pope right now," said Sister Antonia.

The Pontiff received the Last Rites once before, in 1981, after being shot by a would-be assassin.

The Pope underwent throat surgery on Feb. 24 to insert a tube into his windpipe to help air flow into his lungs.

Once dubbed the "Great Communicator," he has been unable to speak in public since he left hospital on March 13.

The feeding tube was added on Wednesday because the Parkinson's disease was making it difficult for him to swallow and he was becoming increasingly weak.

The third longest-serving pope in Roman Catholic history spent 28 days in Rome's Gemelli Hospital in two periods in February and March after suffering breathing crises.

His latest crisis comes after he was forced for the first time in his papacy to skip presiding at all Holy Week celebrations leading up to Easter -- the most important period for Catholics.

Vatican officials interviewed by Reuters earlier on Thursday said they were increasingly pessimistic about the Pope making a full recovery from his ailments.

"Hardly anyone thinks the situation will improve but everyone is hoping for a miracle," said one official.

HISTORIC PAPACY

Historians say one of the Pope's major legacies will remain his role in the fall of communism in Europe in 1989.

Just over a decade later, the Pope fulfilled another of his dreams. He visited the Holy Land in March 2000, and, praying at Jerusalem's Western Wall, asked forgiveness for Catholic sins against Jews over the centuries.

A tireless traveler, hailed as "God's Athlete," he has clocked up some 1.25 million km (775,000 miles) in 104 foreign trips to some 130 countries. A familiar figure across the globe, the Pope has drawn crowds of up to four million people.

He has seemed as much at ease lecturing dictators of the left and the right as he has telling leaders of world democracies that unbridled capitalism and globalization are no panacea for the world's post-Cold War problems.

Critics, however, have attacked his traditionalist stance on family issues, such as his condemnation of contraception.

A former actor who wrote several plays, John Paul has used his mastery of timing, levity and languages to communicate as few other modern world figures have done.

Woo Hoo!!!

That old fart's finally going to be gone forever!

'Bout time cuz I was about ready to sneek into his room and beat him to death with an inflatable baseball bat!

Or maybe I'd just take out his knee caps with it and call it good...it'd be funny either way!

That's what he gets for devoting his life to his imaginary friend!

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
**edited** your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you..

I am a bit rusty on my religion, but if someone know what I am talking about help me out. The 3 kids two died and the third made predictions. Predicted first world war it happened. Said if mankind didn't change it's ways another terrible war will happen. That was world war 2. The third child is still alive and I think it was something like when the pope dies and something else the third great war will come.

You're a douche, you knew it'd get people all uppity and you did it anyway. While you don't give a freakin-duck, I most certainly do. He was a good man, and many people felt close to him, I didn't really but I can understand their feelings. Piss off you little chump, you knew damn well what you were doing. Have some respect, so what if his beliefs differ from yours? Show some respect for the passing of a fellow HUMAN; which from what I've seen, you barely qualify for. You're a chump, and your intolerance is holding back society, kill yourself. Go. Fast.

ChikunPimp couldnt have said it better. I know that all of you dont have organized religion or believe in it, let alone respect in (obviously) but atleast respect the pope as a person that accomplished many other things besides living along time and bein the pope. I respect him for his accomplishments and his willingness to keep going and not resign and be there for his people even though he is in such poor health give the poor man some credit.

they have no reference to what i believe in. go talk to the guy who
wrote the lyrics to the song.
Dude, incase you've been cruising in your douche car for the past couple thousand years... people interact and affect each other. Your intolerance probably won't cause anything terrible but the general intolerance in society as a whole is going to destroy us... and who do you think contributes to that? dude, come on...just try killing yourself, you may like it!

you've already said this **edited** on 2 threads. i think you want to kill yourself. i think its a better idea to kill yourself first. ill go right after. i promise.

What i say shouldnt affect anybody. people can choose to believe what they want. society can do what it wants. Society is already tolerant to this kind of stuff. otherwise that song would never have been released worldwide.

</stupid flame war that's quite clearly wrong on one side>

Well, when he dies (if he hasn't already, I'm not up on news lately) he will be sorely missed. Hopefully this won't precipitate a war as several previous arguments for the papacy have, some splitting the Church (big C) into tiny pieces.

Then just leave already.

Your "arguing" "methods" are not welcome on this forum. Or anywhere on this planet, for that matter (with the rare exception of your average county public school smack in the middle of an area that is 65% retired, and 38% bosnian).

Simply calling someone a "douche" over and over is not considered a vaild arguement in the minds of the educated population of this country (i.e. everyone but you).

I find it somewhat ironic that you dare to call someone one else intolerant when you, yourself, refuse to accept the fact that you may have misinterpreted something as oh-so-shady as song lyrics. (Grrr.)

But oh no, as soon as someone accuses you of this injustice against man kind you fire back with "____________you. you douche. drive your douche car," etc.

If you consider the above "insults" remotely insulting (Tee-hee) then you have some obvious problems. One of them being that you're an intolerant, close minded, arrogant, spoiled suburban kid, (which says a lot coming from Belt) who preaches "fair and equal treatment" (in reguards to religion) but does not deliver when it comes time for he, himself, to deliver on his end of the deal (tolerating other's views). The other being that you cannot construct a comprehencive argument with out the use of insults, curse words, remotely accurate spelling, or proper grammar.

But don't let this get you down.

I mean, once you get past the glaring hypocracy of your views, beliefs, language skills, and "ethics" in general, I'm sure you're a great guy, right?

I mean, there is absolutely nothing wrong with suggesting suicide on several occasions, right? I'm sure no one would ever take that suggestion seriously. I'm sure he knew you were just joking around, Right?

You can be a very cunning and vivid linguist at times, do you realise that? I mean, the way you argue and manipulate the english language paints a very vivid, colorful, and detailed image into my mind when ever I have the pleasure of reading your well constructed arguments. Seriously, what's your secret?

Could it possibly be a number of "insults" haphazardly strewn about the poorly constructed, poorly represented quagmire that is your post? Could you possibly conceal all of this under the veil of good intentions, religious devotion, and tolerance?

Nah, I doubt it. I mean, I'm sure you hold yourself to a much higher standard than that, right?

You're a very ethical and logical person, you know that?

This was an acceptable (and almost welcome) thread when it started out, until you decided to add yourself into the mix.

Have you no concept of legality and responsibility for your own actions?

I suggest you quit while you're behind (posting and flaming, that is). Either quit on your own accord, or your actions will eventually catch up on you. The mods don't like flamers, spammers, and generally intolerant people.

I'd hate for this thread to be closed, even more so beacuse of your actions.

Wow Belt. Way to not notice the wonderfully insulting post that he was responding to.

I mean, obviously Chikun just decided to start spouting insults for no reason. It's impossible that he was offended at the lyrics posted or anything, right?

Give me a break. Just because someone uses an insult doesn't make them a hypocrite. I'll be among the first to defend a person sinning, Christian or no, because nobody's perfect and people make mistakes.

I find it very ironic that you went to such great lengths to insult somebody for insulting somebody else, when it didn't concern you at all.

I will suggest that all of the people involved need to calm down. I don't think xteam is going to kill himself, but seriously...

All of us, let's just walk away.. slowly...
