Well I'm watching the St. Peters Rosary Service, and its only a matter of time before he passes... You have to admit, either you have faith or no faith at all there probably wont be any Pope like him, for a very long time...

you guys... Stop this squabbling its pointless...

The New Pope has to be elected, its not going to be anounced till April 20th-25th.  The 117 Cardinals must be locked into this room, and look over all the nominee's to be elected, and they go threw each one, talk about there pro's, and there con's then on the 14th or 15th day(cant remember) they all Vote for the one they think is the best suited, and if there is some sort of tie or whatever I think they just have a majority Vote, and who ever gets the most becomes the new Pope.

Some say it'll be one from Africa, becasue of how huge the Church is growing there, others think it'll be another Italian...  No one can Really know for sure yet...

I just hope this new one can mesure up the current one.

Isn't this the Pope that let Priests keep their station in the church until they were convicted of child molestation, rather than removing them from postition as soon as they were accused? And isn't this the Pope that said even the convicted pervs wouldn't be punished by the church?

I don't consider him great or wonderful. He's a figurehead, much like the Queen of England. He may have some pull with devout Catholics, but his authority does not spread much. He did not do anything about the molestation, only to push it aside. Even our own government didn't listen to him when he denounced the war in Iraq. Death is always sad, but he is just another person to me.

Well, considering he is the only pope to be invited to the white house like, ever.  (he was invited by George bush, who is in fact a religious fanatic, if you don't think he is, then you should educate yourself on his past and improve your understanding of what a religious fanatic is) George pretty much was just floored and did everything the pope asked him to do.  In an interview after the Pope's visit all Bush talked about was the Pope.  Now, if the pope has enough "pull" with the president of the United States, then you would think he'd have enough pull with other people.  Besides, he didn't travel around the world a dozen times just to spread religion, if there was a big catastrophe, then he would go and hole service for the suffering people and pray with them.  Of course, he did it with a lot of security and almost no one there, but he was still a great humanitarian, so, he is more than "just another person" to me and to a lot of other people, and I'm not even religious

What is the big deal with one religious fanatic inviting another to the White House?

Many celebrities and sports stars go to the White House. Big deal.

And just because Bush cant make decisions for himself doesnt make the man whispering in his ear great.

The pope didnt do anything a four year-old couldn't do.

You may see the things that he did as wonderful but I see things that he did/endorsed as harmful to humanity.

The pope came outright against the war. If he is a religious fantatic, I think he would have listened to the pope on that issue. Just because he was invited doesn't make him a god either.

okay, fair enough, like i said, I'm not a church-going person, but i think its good the pope is around for other people.  It gives people hope, and if it can keep someone from doing something stupid like going into the nearest Am/Pm and shooting everyone, then its good enough for me.

I'm a strong believer in religion was made to control people, but whatever floats your boat.

I never said he wasn't useful, only that he is not as powerful as people make him out to be. There are more people that do not follow his word in this world than those who do or those who "say they do." Everyone can have their leader, that is fine, but the media coverage is ridiculous.

I'm gald to see most of you who don't believe in Religion or whatever are mature enough to admit John Paul II was a good person. Hades your a different story. Ive never seen such a one sided person before. Reall, it's pathetic. The Pope isn't a figure head. He controls the ENTIRE Roman Catholic church (Billions of people). I believe it was this Pope that brought the changes of Vatican II. Anyone here that knows somthing about the slightly past religious days will know what I'm talking about. The Pope always visited disaster sites, prayed for those in need, and helped where ever he could. Now he's 84, and his heart and kidneys are failing. Are you surprised he can't do much anymore? He's has Parkinsons disese I believe (or somthing similar) He's a tough guy. He was even shot once in the chest. He went to the guy who shot him and forgave him. It takes guts to do that. (the man who shot him was so shocked he cried) As a kid Catholics were persecuted and he helped have Mass in a basement and moved people in and out when gaurds weren't looking. To go through all that, and be able to live till 84 is pretty amazing. And there's much more to this man than just that.

I have to agree with Hades on this. It's not that he doesn't have a good heart and isn't a good person. I think people are giving him too much credit for a man that was given the position of power and is almost expected to do many of those things. It kind of reminds me when Reagan died and people actually called him the "greatest President ever." I was simply floored.

Who said I don't know what the pope did. I happen to pay attention to many of the events of his life, but it doesn't make him the "greatest ever." Plenty of people devote their life and all the money they can scrounge to helping people, it's not their faults they didn't get elected into a Power Position. I can't come to follow someone that still considers birth control a sin, it's too old fashioned.

My sig is meant to be a joke. It's already been discussed as I am not referring to Christ's coming back from the dead.

Anyways, I refuse to put so much emphasis on somone by calling them the "greatest." I've always felt that some people are made to be bigger than they really are.

Your right I dont know any of the "good things" he did. Quiet frankly I dont care. But I do know that there are billions of dollars being wasted on fancy buildings/churches, religious costumes, tv events, molestation payoffs, all in the name of God, that can be filling mouths or curing AIDS.

I have caught a big mistake you made. Yes, every buissiness pays this stuff, but we don't sell products thus there is no profit. All collection money goes to Employment, Charities, Upkeep of Parish property, Bills, Parish Improvement. They arent getting "richer" or keeping the money for themselves. Priests have a set Salary and it is very very low. I am very involved in my Parish and I am very aware of our Financial situation. We even publish a little handbook showing where all money goes to.

Shouldnt they be giving all of it to the needy? Since that is why it was collected in the first place?

Right, their not selling salvation,,,,,

I can think of at least 100 million in molestation verdicts, I am sure the number is way higher.... Where does that fit into the fancy payout booklet?

Hades, we have a very good Envelope system so people know exactally where their money is going. Some are labled as "Weekly offering" In this are two envelopes, the first one goes to the Church for it's expenses, the second goes to different Charities. Yeah, we probably would give all the money to the charities but guess what? Running a Parish isn't free. There are still Bills, wages etc. to pay.

You know what? I don't feel like ruining this thread thus I am leaving. Hades obviously you are clueless when it comes to running Churches and schools. I don't need to read any of your biased articles either. You don't go to church or care about it. I do, work there, and know how the money system works. If there is a greedy church it's the mormons. They make you apy 10% of your salary. Your not forced to pay anything in a Catholic church. You make it seem like running a church is free. Look at it this way. We spent like 15,000 on Janitorial supplies alone last year to make sure the school is clean and healthy for the kids. Costs are great in a Parish, and even though there is all this to pay, we always make an effort to help the poor, even if it put us into debt for a while (which it has more than twice) I can't get into your closed minded head and Im not ruining this thread so Good Bye.

Haha. I was going to step out too when I realised this thread had gone from bashing the pope to bashing the catholic church.

At least the Mormons dont have the crusades in their history nor do they have child molesting priests.

I dont care what a church does with it money, but for church leaders to make judgement on other people's lives and decision is the name of "GOD," I feel that is wrong.
