However, unlike babbling idiots, I do not consider Lincoln to be the great man as many others do. He refused habeas corpus, denied states' rights, and did not free slaves based on an abolitionist ideology. I don't understand your use for posting these things. The Civil War and Iraq War are two completely different engagements, regardless of how they are seen in the media.

You know, given that I live in the south, and live extremely close to the fabled "free state of Winston" I can say that the fallout from that earlier war you mentioned is still felt. Even to this day, there are places that haven't climbed out of poverty, whose kids best bet is a trailer manufaucting plant, and who might be able to read at a fifth grade level by the time they reach graduation, because no good teachers will come to the schools because the pay is so low.

Tell me, do you know ANYTHING about American history, or that period of thime called Reconstruction, and the lasting economic, social, and political problems that have been widespread since?

Relating those two wars won't win anyone over to you that really knows what happened during and after the war between the states. I don't participate in arguments about the current war, but as far as your reference to the last war goes, you've failed to make the point you wanted to.

And one final point for today...

The war is an abject and utter failure. What everyone thought would be a quick, decisive victory has turned into an embarrassing series of reversals. The enemy, -- a ragtag, badly-fed collection of hotheads and fanatics – has failed to be shocked and awed by the most magnificent military machine ever fielded. Their dogged resistance has shown us the futility of the idea that a nation of millions could ever be subjugated and administered, no matter what obscene price we are willing to pay in blood and money.

The President of the United States is a buffoon, an idiot, a man barely able to speak the English language. His vice president is a little-seen, widely despised enigma and his chief military advisor a wild-eyed warmonger. Only his Secretary of State offers any hope of redemption, for he at least is a reasonable, well-educated man, a man most thought would have made a far, far better choice for Chief Executive.

We must face the fact that we had no business forcing this unjust war on a people who simply want to be left alone. It has damaged our international relationships beyond any measure, and has proven to be illegal, immoral and nothing less than a monumental mistake that will take generations to rectify. We can never hope to subdue and remake an entire nation of millions. All we will do is alienate them further. So we must bring this war to an immediate end, and make a solemn promise to history that we will never launch another war of aggression and preemption again, so help us God. [/I}

------------------------------------------------------

This was the condensed opinion of the Copperhead press. The time was the summer of 1864.

Everyone thought the Rebels would be whipped at Bull Run, and that the Confederacy would collapse within a few days or hours of such a defeat. No one expected the common Southern man to fight so tenaciously, a man who owned no slaves and who in fact despised the rich fire-eaters who had taken them to war.

Lincoln was widely considered a bumpkin , a gorilla, an uncouth backwoods hick who by some miracle of political compromise had made it to the White House. Secretary of War Stanton had assumed near-dictatorial powers and was also roundly despised. Only Secretary of State William Seward, a well-spoken, intelligent Easterner and a former Presidential candidate, seemed fit to hold office.

After three interminable and unbelievably bloody years of conflict, many in the Northern press had long ago become convinced that there was no hope of winning the war, and far less of winning the peace that followed. After nearly forty months of battle and maneuver, after seeing endless hopes dashed in spectacular failure, after watching the magnificent Army of the Potomac again and again whipped and humiliated by a far smaller, under-fed, under-equipped force, the New York newspapers and many, many others were calling for an immediate end to this parade of failures.

It took them forty months and hundreds of thousands killed to reach that point. Today, many news outlets have reached a similar conclusion after ten days and less than fifty combat fatalities.

Ahhh. Progress.

for the record, the only reason Lincoln freed the slaves was to gain support from abolitionists, and for more forces. Much like the leaders of our Nation's Army did during the Revolutionary War.  Slaves were escaping and running to the British Army(where they were promised freedom and a chunk of land).  So, George and the boys decided to promise our slaves freedom as well for fighting....Of course, it was a lie, so when the war ended, the slaves were forced back into slavery....It was right, But its all in the past

Dune your arguement of Habeus corpeus is wrong, states aren't guranteed due process, succession is rebellion, and rebellion of states is considered an act of war, law has no room in war (cept Geneva...)

The state didn't invoke it, Lincoln did becuase it was a federal offense. Lincoln refused habeus corpus which is found in the body of the constitution and is granted to everyone regardless of time of war. Especially to the U.S.'s own citizens. Just because they did it doesn't mean it wasn't illegal.

Ok, let me rephrase it so you can understand my point

States don't get habeus corpeus (due process) becasue they aren't people. The citizens DO get it, but the states are held accountable if they succeed. Succession is an act of war against the U.S. if it is a state suceeding. Due process is in a court of law, states don't get due process because they weren't being tried for anything. Due process is for citizens defense.. can't be sentenced to death without due process...

If you don't understand that I don't know how better to explain it

And let me rephrase it so you can understand. He didn't refuse habeaus corpus to states, he refused it to many individuals, including protesters. That's who I am talking about, and that's why he isn't that great of a guy. You thought I meant states getting it? Come on, no one is that stupid to think you can imprison a state. Habeus corpus is not exactly due process either, close, but not the same.

Oh yeah hahahha lets all laugh at me liking a band... a normal everyday band that has sold more records than many other bands....

You don't see me making fun of people for liking Bruce Springsten do ya? I 100% disagree with Bruce but do I make fun of his fans? No

The band isn't funny, it's the fact that you are actually getting upset at this. It makes it so worth it. The fact that you had to explain that when they came on stage everyone was "rocking out," is hilarious. I could care less what you like; however, it's funny to me to see you have to explain yourself.

normally it takes a unanimous vote of teh congress to allow a state to secede but when texas joined the union they made a deal where they could secede anytime they wanted to and it wouldnt be considered an act or war or treason or anything because texas was originally its own country before it was a state.  of course the chance of a secession attempt even makin it to the point where the state legistlature would get a vote on it are extremely slim so its not an issue really

MMkay back on the "Make fun of LB track"

Just because they are my favorite doesn't mean I'm obsessed with them. I have 2 of their cd's, the rest are on MP3... Hell I like Story of the Year, Hoobastank, Linkin Park (their supposed rivals)

And I'm not the only one that likes them, they have gone atleast tripple platnium on each cd.... I can't afford 3 million cd's each LOL

Also, maybe this seems kinda "low" to you guys, but a lot of celebs like them too, name a few
Tom Cruise (He chose "Take a Look Around" as MI:2 theme)
Red Man
Method Man
Eminem
Snoop Dogg
Brittney Spears (LOL)

So drop the f -ing subject, I will like who I want to, and I don't need to be on the defensive everytime I come onto this forum just becasue of my avatar...
You can't tell me you don't like ANY of their songs
I know a lot of people who "hate" LB but love Break Stuff or My Way.

So if you dont' like em, go to a LB hater website, don't flame me

Wrong

I look at both sides, granted I am biased, but EVERYONE is biased, I don't care what you say.

Oh yea you two are so cool, making fun of a 16 year old you disagree with, and I think thats because when you were my age, you were picked on all the time... so you think you're all high and mighty for doing it to someone younger to you that you have never met... it's called respect, get some

I am against my parents on politics, and not because I just want to be a rebel and shy away from everything they like, but because I truely belive the left is wrong, thats why the Right is Right
