On Thursday we're putting down our dog "Frank"
He's a large dog (Coming in at around 160) and has had bad arthritis for a while now, and just recently it's gotten to the point where he can't walk at all on his own, therefore immobilizing him. Since then he hasn't really been fond of eating much, except ice cream, and the occasional ice cube. He's still in good mental shape, although he does look sort of sad. The hard part is that I don't remember life without a dog, we've had him for 10.5 years, which would make me about 7ish when we got him. It'll be weird not having him laying around, making funny faces and annoying the hell out of me with his barking. It's just terribly hard to look at him and know that he only has less than 48 hours to live. It really sucks, and its taking a toll on all of our family, but it is in his best interest...I guess. |

We had to do the same thing for our dog. In the long run it is the best thing to do. I remember pictures of Frank too. One cool dog.

I also forgot to say this. You should know that when he gets put down, he will be in no pain what so ever. It will just feel like falling asleep to him. When i found this out, it really made me feel better. I personally decided not to go with my mom to the vet when we put my dog down, only because i think i would have been a reck, but hey, everyone is different. Like i said, good luck. -me -------------

When my first dog got put down it was at our house, someone came and
did it, by injection. I was young, but handled it very well I
thought. I hope everything goes ok for you.

My 12 year old norwegian elkhound is getting close. She is rather fat, so when she sits her legs fall asleep and then she cant get up easily cause its wierd for her to put weight on them. When that first happened we thought she was done, but then she was fine, so shes gonna last a bit longer. ------------- ///AMG What? |

We decided it wouldn't be fair if we got another dog. Both of my parents work full time, both of my other brothers are going to be at college next year, and I work alot inbetween school. |

Yea man, i have to do the same thing to my 10.5 year old chesapeake (sp?) bay retriever. Hes been a good dog but now he can barely walk its weird having a dog that you grow up with and then you gotta think hes not gonna be there with his barking the next morning.. its hard.. but ya gotta do what ya gotta do and whats best for him. ------------- USAF Special Weapons Technician. |

Trust me its better if you can prepare. I got a dog when I was 4, she lived untill I was 14, hten one day stoped eating. We found out she had cancer, She died 10 mins before we left to get her put down, in our living room. -------------

Sorry to hear that Dave.
When I was in 6th grade we had to put down our 12 year old Golden Retriever, Amanda. I found her having a seizure on my driveway walking home from school. I think that was the only time I've ever seen my dad cry. -------------

My dog has congestive heart failure. So I will have to shoot her. Nobody i know will do it exept the vet (we cant go in there anymore cause my dog killed a pet bird). My dog was very mean to people she doesnt know. And ALL of my friends will do it but i dont believe they will do it humanly (kick her and stuff Yes that is humane ive killed plenty of stray dogs and from 25 feet away in the head they drop and dont kick or any thing but im not lookin forward to it ------------- Long Live The Confederacy I am an AMERICAN AND IM PROUD OF IT! |

I feel for you man. I just got my dog and I can't really picture life
before we got her. You're really doing the best thing for him. Letting
him live in pain just wouldn't be humane.

I went through the same thing when I was like 8, our 15 year old golden named Cedric (no relation to the forumer) had to be put down. And my dad, having had the dog longer than me cried. Abut five months ago, my dalmation, Chopper, had to be put down. He was a little over 14, and was on his final legs when my dad took him to the vet to be euthanized. He was completely deaf, had bad legs, and had a hard time controlling his number twos. He always looked sad, like you said for your dog, and almost never wagged his tail. On the night he was put down, he couldn't even get into his doghouse. He got stuck at the entryway, and my dad had to pull him out. We gave him one last doggy treat, and he was off to a better place... I, too, have never known a life without that dog by my side. He was older than I was when he was put down. As painful as the experience for you maybe, it can be of comfort to realize that it is what is best for your pet. Best of luck. |

My aunt and uncle's dog had to be put down about a year or so ago. She got extremely sick, and dropped from about 130 lbs or so to about 50 lbs in about two weeks. She would just lay there all day. She was probably about 10.
On the other hand, my cat is going to be eighteen next month and she's in fairly good health, except for her weight. |

Putting a dog down sucks. Its just something you have to get over. Just think of it this way. He lived a good long life, just remember the happy times you had with him. 3 years ago this month i had to put my dog to sleep. She had some wierd liver disease. The sad part was she was only 4. Thats when it sucks a lot is when they die young. You will get over it. The best thing to do is get a new puppy and train him or her and just start all over. Never be afraid to lose a pet and go through the same ordeal. Its better to have loved than to have never loved at all...Well you catch my drift or something.
