No, not really.
It's all preference and personal opinion on which is better. You'll have your 98 enthusiasts and your A5 enthusiasts.
I'm going with 98c because that is what I shoot.

They are about the same accuracy. 98 is easier to clean externally, but the field strip on the A5 is cool.

I like the 98c better because there are a lot more upgrades and it is more easily customizable. But like everyone above has said it is a personal preference. The A-5 does shoot faster stock unless you buy a 98 with a RT, Stock accuracy for both guns are really the same though.

Alright, I own a M98C along with an A5RT, and my opinions/experiences are these:
-The Cyclone has absolutely never failed me! I feel like it is the bomb and worth the $100 price difference alone.
-The A5 and M98C have basically the same air efficiency.
-The A5 weighs about .5# more stock, but that's including an awesome hopper! To make the M98C able to feed as fast as an A5, you would need to add a motorized hopper which will take away that initial .5 pound advantage...when equipped to shoot fast, the A5 is actually lighter than the M98C by a considerable bit. Also, the Cyclone holds over 200 rounds, doesn't make any noise, doesn't require batteries, and can be capped at 30 rounds....pretty sweet if you ask me.
-The A5's enclosed cocking, interchangable barrel threads, and quick-stripping/modular construction along with the Cyclone make it a much better value than the M98C...it even includes a built-in vertical adapter which is an extra $20 for a M98C!
The M98C's advantages are that you can have your choice in hoppers/warp feed, there's an E-Bolt available, the quick-release elbow makes it easier to clean the barrel if you get a break, but that's really about all I can think of.
The A5 is a better stock gun and a much better value than a M98C...you get a LOT for those extra $100.
Also, stock, both guns fire the same speed...the triggers are basically the same. If anything, the M98C I got was more accurate stock. The A5's stock barrel is worse than the M98C's, IME.
But no gun is inherrantly more accurate than any other, the A5 and M98C are the same in accuracy.
To sum it up, the A5 and M98C are great guns but the A5 is the better value and better gun to grow with...it's the evolution of the Tippmann guns and is a lot more practical than a M98C.
You can upgrade the M98C to do most the things the A5 can't, but it's gonna cost you more money than just buying the A5 and you're still never gonna be able to get a Cyclone, quick-strip pins, and interchangable barrel threading.
One last thing, I do like M98 threading! I use the adapter on my A5...I don't even own an A5-threaded barrel! I've heard people dissing the M98 threads, but I've never had a problem and feel it's a good design...better than those thin threads on the A5ProCarb.

ok guys. one thing yall have to understand is that the A-5 can shoot 15bps STOCK. and it can shoot even faster if you add a E-grip and a high pressure system.

The internals of the A5 and M98C are almost identical...neither of them can inherrantly cycle any faster than the other. There is really no way to pull 15bps on a stock A5!!! You need some sort of help...either an RT or E-Grip.
The E-Grip does is actually capped at 15bps, but most people report that it won't even do the full 15 even when firing in F/A modes.
basically, please don't take this dude's post too seriously....no offense meant.

Yes, you could say that. Some people may not even be able to stand the A5 because of the Cyclone, while some people are sold by it.
Personally, I own both the guns, and feel that so long as you are cool with the Cyclone and its unique feel, you might as well spend the extra dough and go with the A5.
But the M98C can be made to cycle just as fast if not faster, is just as versatile in different ways, just as accurate with the same barel/paint/air setup....the internals of the guns are the same basically. It's just little upgrades and tweaks and a couple revolutionary ideas that make it a gun that's better in the longrun and a better value, IME.

How do you figure the 98 is more customizable, I've seen x10 as many custom option for the A-5. I own both. I bought the A-5 because of its customization.

^ I would kinda agree. Almost anything you could get for a M98C you can get for an A5, barring aftermarket hoppers and .45 grips, and maybe an actual electropneumatic conversion kit.

Really, one of the few bad things I can think about the A5 stock is that it needs a drop forward adapter, but it includes a built-in vertical adapter so that cancels out

Heh, ummmm...yeah.
Upgrading wise, they are almost identical. I can't really think of anything that you couldn't get for the other besides the electro-pnuematic kit.
The 98c has a few different options if you want to up the fire power abilities. R/T and E-Bolt kit quickly come to mind. But you can also find sear tripper kits, and there are a few variations to the e-bolt out there, one made by BSA I belive (haven't been on the forums in awhile so I am outta the loop ).
Really the only difference I see between the A-5 and the 98c is the cut in half soup can hanging off of the side of the A-5 (cyclone). For some it gets in the way, others, it doesn't.
I would say the advantages of the 98c over the A-5 are quite limited. Really the only good thing about the 98c is it is EXTREMELY simple to spray paint and have a good finish...but then again I have never painted an A-5.

"Really the only difference I see between the A-5 and the 98c is the cut in half soup can hanging off of the side of the A-5 (cyclone). For some it gets in the way, others, it doesn't."
There's also:
-Interchangable barrel threading
-Quick-strip, modular construction
-Enclosed cocking
-Built-in Vertical adapter
-Adjustable foregrip
For me, the Cyclone itself is worth the price difference between the A5 and M98C....the other stuff just makes it a "no-brainer."

For someone considering buying either an A5 or a 98, the best advice I can offer is to go to a dealer in the area where you can see, handle, and maybe even shoot both before you buy. As everyone pretty much mentioned, the two are similiar in many ways. Since the differences are pretty much personal preferences, then you should take a good look at each to see which one would work best for you.

A-5 has never let me down, and paintball players at my local field who have been playing forever are amazed at how fast i can shoot with my e-grip, i can tell tou one thing, its definetly over 15bps. In my mind a stock A-5 is better than a stock 98. The cyclone is the best.
