It seems to me that they're a load of crap. Most of the "arguments" are calling the opposition names or making cheap shots while having no valid points whatsoever, all in disjointed grammar with no spelling skill. Even the more "mature" debaters will often get heated and say some rash things.

I'll make any debate to my opinions short and to the point: I'm right and you're wrong. Shut up.

I actually enjoy a good debate, it's just that I partake so rarely because If there's they typical show of dumbassery, I won't even bother

I actually find them better than face to face debates, at least with most of the people I've have the pleasure of debating. The dumbassery you speak of isn't debating, it's stupid, uninformed, opinionated people sporting rehetoric at each other, thats it. Debates and Politics form a lot of the back bone of this country and without the right and tradition of vocal dissention we definately would not be where we are now.

I agree, online debates do suck, becasue I for one cannot get my point accross without being misunderstood or flamed becasue I can't phrase it properly in writng.

In words, I'll beat almost any one my age I come up against, sometimes even people older, but writing, a 10 year old can beat me.. sad

I don't really know much about politics, so I don't debate about them much.

Debates are shaped by the participants.  On this forum you have teenagers, and adults who act like teenagers.  Hence the result.

Other internet forums with a higher average age have much more "mature" discussions.  They are also much more boring.

You should see the Americas Army forum. Bunch of US and foreign vets...the debates are scary.

They managed to get all of R&R (second biggest forum section) closed down because of a rebellion and invasion(no, really) of the general forum. Those were good times.

I don't mind a good debate. I just recently got into a very heated one over the death penalty and due process.

Oh yeah, that makes perfect sense.

You're great at debating as long as you don't have time to think about
what you're saying. If, however, you're given time to think, plan, and
sculpt your argument, all of a sudden your debating skills
go straight to hell.

Now I get it.

The debates are great. I usually don't partake because I can't stay on the Forum long enough for me to make multiple replies. So I usually just chime in a single post a few pages in that is relevant towards the first post, and not the actually debate.
