To serve God and keep his commandments. To spread the word
that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world and through repentance
you can receive eternal life.

The good lord created us to do his bidding which is laid down in the bible. He wants us to walk in his light and spread the good news of the gospel. To become evangelists. To spread the news you don't have to be a church leader, you don't have to be a missionary, and you don't have to be on your church council. All it takes to be an evangelist is to spread the news. You could ask a co-worker to church with you or a buddy from school to youthgroup.
In my opinion it is being the best person you can be. BE accepting and put trust and faith in god. In him you find strength, peace, and love. Let him be a refuge and a guide.
The best gift you can give yourself is trust in god, but no one else but you can give that to yourself.

I'm with Clark. Define "meaning". Are you asking "What is the purpose of our existance?" or "Whats the point?" or "Why were we put here to begin with?"
All three could be different answers, different opinions. All three answers will change with time from any one person.
Right now, my purpose in life is to get through my wedding, be a good husband, and continue to help drag the children in this county towards the 21st century, and out of a world where 'puters are just for solitare and typing a book report.
The point is to one day look back on life and regret nothing, because I ended up in a pretty good place after all.
I think we were put here on a bet by two cosmic powers, to see how (or how long it will take until) we'll do ourselves in.

I think life has to do with realizing potential. I don't think life has any predestined purpose, but realizing potential seems to be the best meaning I can apply to it. It's the only thing in the natural world that we can individually seize control of and direct. Circumstances vary, but we can all still strive to be our best.

Oh dear, you thought I was serious.
I am now though. Your post is innaccurate. At least some other animals
do know right from wrong...or more accurately are at least capable of learning it from
man.
Koko the gorilla (most famous of the gorillas who have been taught
rudimentary sign language) for instance, not only knows what is good and
bad behavior...she has been known to lie about things to try and get
out of trouble. She also knows that lying is wrong because when caught
she will compound the lie by saying she wouldn't do that.

Dogs don't learn right and wrong, they learn what pisses you off and what NOT to do, and maybe a trick or 2 to get them a free snack.
other than that, they are an animal that is guided by instinct.
The purpose of life is to have as much fun and happiness as possible, without impeding on anyone else's quest for happiness.
We are put on Earth to enjoy what God has provided us with, and it's a test to see if we an enjoy that responsibly, without stepping on anyone's toes.

Zesty, wouldnt learning what NOT to do, be essentially the same as learning the difference between right and wrong?
For example. Learning to NOT pee on the carpet. That's what not to do, and to do so would be wrong.
as opposed to: Learning to not rob a gas station. That's what not to do, and to do so would be wrong.
Animals CAN learn the difference between right and wrong. If my dig does something stupid, and you yell at her for it, she'll roll onto her back and cover her nose with her paws. I would say that she knows what she did waw wrong.

Dolphins can supposedly feel emotions. If you want to confirm or refute
that, feel free. I was not discussin emotion persay, merely guilt and
remorse, which are part of someones morale structures.

She was taught those behaviors. Her understanding of right and wrong is
based purely on societies interpretation of morale values. Humans feel
guilt when they hurt someone, or do some wrong, even if it is not
strictly against the law. Koko the gorilla tells the truth because that
is how she was trained, not because that is what she feels is right.

Learning based on punishment is a very low level form of learning. I
forget the scientific term, but humans, dogs, mice, koalas...all of
them will avoid certain behaviors if subjected to punishment. Self
preservation takes control. So, dogs can learn that peeing on the rug
equals a smack. However, they will still not understand that it is
wrong, just that when they do A, they recieve B. Similar to negative
reinforcement.
Edit: I think I basically agreed with you...

I thought the number that they talked about was 24...
Anyways borntopaint said something about to serve god and spread
jesus's teachings and stuff. Now im a devout catholic (no
relation to the preists) but what was the meaning of life before
jesus? I dont know if anyones said this yet cause i didnt read
all the posts but hmmm? |
After the fall of man...First sin. The meaning was to serve God
and keep his commandments. When it came down to only one family
who did so, God sent the flood wiped the earth clean and promised the
world he would never send a flood like that again (rainbow). Then
the world became once again predominantly wicked and only Abraham
served the Lord. God chose him and his descendants (Isrealites)
as his people. From that point through to the time of Christ,
Salvation came only to the Jews. Christ then died for all the
sins of the world and salvation was open to the believing gentiles as
well. The life of a Christian is to be devoted to living like
Christ and spreading the Word. The Bible teaches that a person
who Strives to live like Christ, recognizes he/she still sins and
confesses those sins will be rewarded with eternal life in
Heaven. You will never hear me say that only Christians will be
welcomed into Heavan. I do believe that if you know what you have
to do as laid out in the Bible (I will be happy to explain to anybody
interested) and you do nothing about it than you won't recieve eternal
life. I also believe that it is not my decision who will be
welcomed into heavan or not. That decision lies only with the
Lord. I will talk to anybody about this who is interested in
knowing why this is the most important thing in my life.

I commend you for your courage
I personally agree with you, although I think we both can agree it is a pretty hard thing to do. I just try as best I can.

You got that right. It makes it alot easier to surround yourself with people who feel the same way though.

after many hours of thought i figured it out!!!!
the meaning of life:
To seize power in your country by the means of a hostile takeover then build up a massive army and conquer the world then recruit the smartest scientists in the world to figure out the key to eternal life then once you have eternal life kill the scientists so that only you know the secret then brainwash the world into thinking that you are god. there you go the meaning of life

The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's also a movie now. And 42 is
the answer to everything, it says so on the first page if I remember
correctly.
