I'd have to say that I am.

I can play every single Jimi Hendrix song ever written, all at once. To the average idiot it just sounds like noise, but that's because I'm playing so many awesome chords and riffs at the same time.

Wow, there are way too many to name ...

I wish Randy Rhoades had not died so young ... imagine what he could have accomplished!

Also, let's not forget Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tommy Bolin, Yngwie Malmsteen (when he was younger and not so stoned), Neal Schon and Eric Clapton.

Yes, circles...in that he's made a living by playing virtually the same thing for 30 years.

Very one-dimensional song writer, much like Steve Harris of Iron Maiden has been sometimes.

I'm sensing some serious e-angstiness in this thread. Face it Angus Young was not that great a guitarist. If you play guitar and can't play a song written by Angus Young you should just slit your wrists now. Maybe it sounds good but the skill level is not high, same deal with Hendrix.

Go download his live version of Johnny B Goode, its about 6 minutes because of the solo, but it's good none the less.

He's nowhere near the greatest, but he's definently good.

Steve vai is definately my personal favorite. theres no way you could decide on a 'best' or 'greatest' guitarist. different musicians have different styles and techniques, and you cant compare many of them becuase their style is just so incredibly different.

whole lotta love solo isnt that tuff. Malcolm you as the greatest? he's a damgood rythm player...  but cant even be compared to most the people listed. neither can angus. their just not that good. cools songs, but they all sound the same, even angus admits that.

Ritchie Blackmore is a fantastic guitarist who is more of a source of inspiration than a guitar god. yngwie malmsteen is a huge blackmore fan, but could blow ritchie out of the water with his hands tied behind his back.

and eddie van halen.............. yeah the tapping thing... real cool and all, he's a great rock/pop guitarist, but still cant hold a candle to many others.

MARK TREMONTI?? He can't be serious. Hendrix, in my opinion. Too many people my age just look at his music on face value. I can play just about anything he ever did, but in his era what he did was nothing less than amazing.

Other than that, I'm going for Stevie.

Allthough I've been touting Petrucci the whole time I mjust admit you've made me remember alot of other guitarists out there. Steve Vai, Malmsteen, Buckethead. At times Hendrix was a great guitar player and it shows in songs like little wing where his chord selection is amazing. I'm also thinking of Santana because the guys expression with a guitar is essentially unmatched. Petrucci May not be the best in his genre but he's at least second. I feel like maybe he's trying to cram too much into his music at once and if he had a little better note selection he'd be the best at what he does. The guy is just plain skilled and I feel like he could probably outplay anyone on the planet but that doesn't allways come through in his music as much as it should.
